Wood is the most versatile and abundant building material in the world. There are two different types of woods; softwood and hardwood. Softwood comes from conifer trees, which are trees that don’t lose their leaves in the fall. Hardwood comes from deciduous trees, which are trees that lose their leaves in the fall. Wood has two big draw backs warping and rotting. Wood is prone to warp if it is not stored in constant humidity. Wood will rot if water gets into the wood. For wood to be structurally sound it cannot be rotten or warped. Wood has multiple causes, and if it is not solved, the effects could be dire. To get boards out of trees, trees must go through a milling process. The first part of milling trees is cutting them down and cutting all the limbs off. After all the limbs are cut off, the trees are cut into different lengths. Once the trees are cut to their length, the trees must be de barked. After the trees are de barked they are loaded onto trucks and taken to a saw mill. At the saw mill a computer determines the best way to cut up the tree to leave no waste. There are a couple different ways a tree can be cut up. Trees can …show more content…
Steel is a more reliable product than wood. Steel will never warp to the degree that wood will. Steel will also never have bugs attack it. When compared to wood, steel is multiple times stronger. Even though steel is a stronger and more reliable product than wood it does have its drawbacks that are the reason steel is not used in homes. Steel cost a lot more compared to wood. Steel also weighs a lot more than wood. Therefore, steel is harder to work with than wood. Steel also cannot be used in homes the way they are built today. There is no easy way to use steel as studs or to attach drywall to steel. Steel is also extremely conductive therefore, steel is not good at holding in
"Selective cutting" is the practice by which trees are cut down according to certain ascertainable features. If a tree were so old and large that it inhibited the growth of other trees, then it would be a prime target for timber. Trees can hinder the growth of other trees by means of overbearing roots or overgrowth of branches that would not permit sunlight to reach smaller and less developed trees.(p17-18) "Clear cutting", however, takes an entirely different approach. Rather than a few trees that are undoubtedly ready to be timbered, all the trees in the area would simply be cut down. There would be no selection process involved and nothing would be left of the surrounding trees.(p18-19) The last process is called "sustained yeild". Murphy said, "…others might cut themselves out of existence, but his company would never lack timber ready to fell. It’s annual cut would always be limited and never exceed its timberland’s newgrowth."(p18)
The people of the Eastern Woodlands made many tools to help them in their everyday lives. They made spears, weirs, nets, bows and arrows, lances, knives, taps, snares and deadfall for hunting. Most of those tools were made of wood or bark and other forest material. Arrowheads were made from chert, or flint, from sedimentary rocks. They were shaped like isosceles triangles, the smallest arrows were used for hunting birds, the bigger ones were to spear bears or deer. Flint knives were often oval, or teardrop shaped. For fishing they made spears, weirs, and nets. They also made canoes from hollowed-out trees to help with fishing in the lakes and streams. Some other tools they made were axes made of stone to strip bark, clear fields and removing fat from hides. Axes
“Be more concerned with you character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” These words of John Wooden are just a few out of many wise quotes millions of people, not just athletes, are inspired by today and likely will continue to be inspired by for a very long time. Basketball fans and experts consider John Wooden as one of, if not, the greatest coaches of all time. Much of his success is a result of his beliefs and coaching system. Knowing the background of Coach Wooden’s playing and coaching career plays a significant role in understanding how he practiced his beliefs with his teams and how his philosophy and success intertwined to set a precedent for the remainder of collegiate basketball.
(Kumar et al., 2008a). Globally, 1.3 1010 metric tons of wood is produced by terrestrial
A molecular miracle occurs every time the Wood Frog faces freezing temperatures. At the point where human skin would freeze and the cells collapse resulting in frostbite, this frog’s system uses colligative properties to secrete sugars which support the frog’s cells and keep them from collapsing.
Taking wood from rainforests and old-growth forests is detrimental to the environment and society. However, it is possible for us to have sustainable wood if we make an effort.
Looking back, I remember running through the long lush grass pretending we were at battle andtrying to take cover. I would always find myself behind the old oak tree in our back yard. This was my favorite spot. The thick trunk, like a bodyguard, protected me from the imaginary bullets that flew towards my body. I would lean against the hard bark and for some reason it was comforting to have something sturdy to lean on. It was dark brown, and every now and then a spider would nestle between the pieces of bark. Sometimes I would touch the tree to peek around the corner and my fingers would be sticky. I could never quite figure out why that was, but, nevertheless, I had the hardest time getting it off, a constant reminder of my tree.
Your home is one of the expensive investment that you made. In order to get a high return on investment, you must ensure that it is durably built. The factors that can greatly affect its durability is the materials you use and the workmanship of the custom construction builder you hire.
Type V buildings are known as wood frame construction. To break Type V constructions to the basics, they are constructed of lightweight materials to save the contractor money. This type of construction is the most dangerous to firefighter due to the lightweight, cost effective materials used. Some of the wood frame buildings are Log cabins, Post and frame, Balloon Frame, platform frame, plank and beam, and truss frame.
Woodworking, a form of carpentry, has been around for centuries and overtime developed into a more modern art. Today people will mostly see woodwork in homes in the form of furniture and decorations, or even smaller things such as family heirlooms passed down by generations and simple crafts made by younger generations. The skill of woodworking, however, is not inherited but takes practice and years of experience to fully master. Even experienced woodworkers run into challenges sometimes. The key is to overcome that obstacle and find different ways to create something new from a piece of wood. It is interesting to see and go through the process in which a woodworker goes through
The preparation of making wood into a pulp for papermaking is accomplished in two different ways. In the groundwood process, blocks of wood are held against a fast revolving grindstone that shreds off short wood fibbers from the block. The fibbers produced by this process are short and are used only in the production of cheap newsprint and used to be added with other types of wood fibber in the making of high-quality paper. Another technique uses a chemical-solvent processes where wood chips are treated with solvents that remove “resinous material and lignin” from the wood, leaving pure fibbers of cellulose.
Steel: (for all intents and purposes) was invented in 1855 by Henry Bessemer(Mary Bellis). Science the amazing innovation that has changed the world incredible things have been made from the material from bridged cables and cross beams to arresting wires on aircraft carriers that stop monumental force and speed. It is truly an amazing martial, but eventually it snaps, breaks or tears due to the separation of the molecules. Also steel is not the most flexible material there is which may sound good for what it is used for, construction. You wouldn’t want the floor to shift from under but, what about in areas that have a consent threat of earthquakes having a material that is rigid when needed and flexible when needed would be an invaluable asset to construction companies in many countries. Also at $600-$900 per ton(Platts Mcgraw hill financial) it isn’t the most inexpensive material that could be chosen. Chemically is there a better material that could be used in the place of steel that is stronger more flexible and can be produced for a cheaper price than the normal steel that we use today? First, the choice of spider silk seems like a great choice. Mother nature seems to be the greatest designer of all made of different sections of proteins of extremely ridged and at the same time extremely elastic strings of proteins, that when braided together are 5 times stronger than steel and relatively free to produce as long as the spiders are kept healthy. What makes the proteins so strong? They are linked together almost like thousands of Lego’s linked together which by its self does not sound very strong, but just take 3 and pull length wise and try to pull them apart, it's almost impossible. The same concept is used in the spider's silk...
No one can deny the basic human need for housing. And no one can deny that any advanced culture requires a great deal of paper to transact its daily business. However, one must also recognize the importance of forests in and of themselves. We must fight against deforestation and international community must also introduce stricter policies to stop deforestation. 1) First, we will talk about the effects of deforestation and why it's a problem. 2) Second, we will learn about the many causes of deforestation. 3) Lastly, we will cover how to solve this problem.
Deforestation is not a recent act. It has been practiced throughout human history. About nine-tenths of all deforestation occurred before 1950, but it has increased dramatically over the last 60 years. Trees provide shelter, warmth and food. So its not a surprise that chopping down trees is an age old human activity. Wood from trees is used to build shelters and fuel fires. Fires are used for warmth and to cook food. Nuts and fruit from the trees are food for both humans and animals. Medicines and dyes are also made from the nuts and fruit from the tree. When the trees were cleared, there was rich soil to grow crops with. Back then, stones and flint axes were used to cut down the trees, but for the last sixty years, power saws have been used, and that has made a huge impact. (Williams, 2001).
Deforestation is a current problem in this world, and it’s happening every day, more and more. Deforestation is the clearing of the world’s forests on a massive scale. Every year, the amount of forest we lose is equivalent about the size of Panama. It is everywhere, look at where we attend college. Once upon a time, Eckerd College was all forested area. Every time we build something here on campus, more and more trees get knocked down.
