Robbie Picou Ms. Gauthier English IV October 23,2017 Woodworking Woodworking, a form of carpentry, has been around for centuries and overtime developed into a more modern art. Today people will mostly see woodwork in homes in the form of furniture and decorations, or even smaller things such as family heirlooms passed down by generations and simple crafts made by younger generations. The skill of woodworking, however, is not inherited but takes practice and years of experience to fully master. Even experienced woodworkers run into challenges sometimes. The key is to overcome that obstacle and find different ways to create something new from a piece of wood. It is interesting to see and go through the process in which a woodworker goes through …show more content…
Patience is probably the most important characteristic a woodworker can have. The process in which woodworking goes through is very time consuming. “There are five main steps in woodworking: (1) planning and design, (2) cutting, (3) drilling, (4) fastening, and (5) sanding and finishing.” (Jared, Pg. 1). Planning and design is the most crucial part of the process. During this step a woodworker must calculate precise measurements and create a layout of the final product. Cutting is done by using a variety of different types of tools to make very defined details or simple shapes aimed towards the expected outcome. Next in the process is drilling. Drilling allows a woodworker to connect each section of wood together using screws, metal plates, and hinges (Jared, Pg. 2). This can be done using either hand or power tools. After being drilled together, sections of wood are fastened to one another with screws, nails, or an adhesive. This is the second to last step in the process. Lastly, a woodworker sands the wood and then adds a finish. Sanding is done to remove tool marks and to make the wood surfaces smooth (Jared, Pg. 3). A finish is added to preserve the wood and make the natural wood grain stand out. “If you want a silky, smooth feel to your finish, you must sand between coats no matter what kind of poly you use” (Great Book Of Woodworking Tips, Pg. 71). This goes for both hard and soft wood products. It also adds onto the final product’s look by giving it a more professionally done look. In an interview with Mr. Palacios, he said, “the most challenging thing in woodworking is making a final product look professionally done. The least challenging is to find all of the right materials to perform the job.” In order to achieve the professionally done look some people add wood stain, a dye, to change the color of the wood without loosing the feel of the surface. By doing a stain a woodworker is changing the way the final
“Be more concerned with you character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” These words of John Wooden are just a few out of many wise quotes millions of people, not just athletes, are inspired by today and likely will continue to be inspired by for a very long time. Basketball fans and experts consider John Wooden as one of, if not, the greatest coaches of all time. Much of his success is a result of his beliefs and coaching system. Knowing the background of Coach Wooden’s playing and coaching career plays a significant role in understanding how he practiced his beliefs with his teams and how his philosophy and success intertwined to set a precedent for the remainder of collegiate basketball.
When I was planning my senior project I knew I wanted to make something I could keep and use for myself but I wasn’t quite sure who would be my mentor. Then I thought it would be special to do something like this with my grandpa who is now 84 years old and has 40+ years of experience with construction. He even built his home that he and my grandmother are living in today, in 1954. My grandpa started making canes for himself, to donate and just for fun and I thought it will be cool to make myself a cane and customize it with designs. Before starting my project, I had no previous knowledge of working with wood or heavy machinery. The only time I worked with wood was hammering a nail into a wooden wall. Now after I have completed my project, I know how to stain and varnish wood, use a table saw, stationary sander, wood burner and a drill press machine.
long, smoothly flowing concatenation of horizontal abstract forms that rests on two pedestals set several feet apart. Rippling patterns of chisel marks are visible across every surface as are the strata of the laminated wood. The forms, which range from gently swelling, landscape-like shapes to more sharply defined volumes that evoke architecture or hand tools, are clearly differentiated within the continuous overall structure. While the carving technique and biomorphism relate Six Forms in Pine to established sculptural styles of the 1950s, the sculpture also possesses properties which presage Sugarman's innovative work of the next decade.
In the era we are in today society is consumed with the want of new technology not the need. “The study into quilt history is a rapidly growing area of research in American history: domestic life in the 18th-20th centuries; development of the textile industry in Asia, India, Europe and America; the purpose for making quilts; their patterns and style development over time.” Quilting is an art form as seen through history, the perfecting of practical skills and the evolution of the sewing machine which gives us the beautiful quilting art of today.
Mahogany could be further refined, adding value to the product and thereby increasing profit potential. There are a few carpenters in Honduras that do this work on a contractual basis with which they could form a partnership.
Conclusion 12 XIII. Bibliography 13 I. Introduction The Custom Woodworking Company (CWC) was founded in 1954 by Ron “Woody” Carpenter. Woody, after an apprenticeship as a cabinet maker, started his own small woodworking business, specializing in furniture manufacturing. Due to the high quality of the craftsmanship, CWC gained a reputation for their high quality and attractively designed furniture.
Ashley Furniture is the largest furniture manufacturer in the world. However, and despite all the troubles of making my mortar and pestle, the end result was worth it. When I first started making the bowl, I figured I would never have the patience to finish it, but it is amazing what you can create if you just put in some muscle and time. Through the process of creating my tool, I have firsthand knowledge of how difficult, demanding, and time consuming tool-making can be, and my tool was not even complex. Thus, I have gained even more respect and admiration for our ancestors who created all sorts of simple and intricate stone, bone, and other natural material tools.
Machine tools are the machines which are used to provide special shape and form to the material by different machining operations. There are different kinds of machines tools that are available and can be used for different machining operation. In today’s era, productivity and accuracy are the two most important point of concern for any manufacturing industry. There are various natural and human made forms of error that reduces the machine accuracy which led to loss of productivity, efficiency, setup time and loss of money. [1]
The idea of mastery can be traced as far back as Aristotle who “felt that artistic training included mastery of a medium and gaining knowledge of one’s environment” (DeHoyas, M., Lopez, A., Garnett, R., Gower, S., Sayle, A., Sreenan, N., Stewart, E., Sweny, S., & Wilcox, K. (2005). This concept of mastery has held true for many centuries in varying forms, with the “Medieval apprenticeship being one of the first examples of art instruction in the Western world” (DeHoyas et al., 2005). Beginning around the 11th century craft guilds played a major role in training apprentices, journeymen, and masters, with the earliest recorded guild dating from 1099 (Madaus & Dwyer, 1999). The craft guilds played an important role in the European economy, and by the 14th century became a powerful hierarchal organization (Madau et al., 1999), which we can still see today in the form of trades and unions. Throughout the history of art, the relationship between apprentice and master held a prominent position in the education of young artisans. The apprentice usually began training at the age of 13, although Leon...
According to dictionary.com,” Mechanical Engineering is the branch of engineering dealing with the design, construction, and use of machines.” Their job is to take an idea and actually make it happen. Doing this takes a lot of knowledge and skills. They first start off with an idea that they have. Then they try to make a small module of it. They do this so they know what the product will work without spending a lot of money on it. They have to find the right materials to do this. The materials have to be able to withstand a lot of things nature has to throw at it. Like rain, dust, lightening, and many more things. After they have to make sure the produce is safe. When all of this is done they build the real thing.
The Creative Arts play a significant role in early childhood education as it provides children with a diverse range of skills to enhance their learning and development to meet the needs of succeeding in the 21st century. Educators can promote The Arts by adopting the Reggio Emilia approach to education, encouraging children to co-construct the curriculum to develop their skills in partnership with teachers, families and their cohorts. The focus of this essay is to emphasise the value of Creative Arts in early childhood education by providing a summary of the concepts and skills of the Creative Arts and the four strands; Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Then, ascertain how Creative Arts benefit children’s social development, language and
In the art community there is a lot of controversy in distinguishing what the difference between an artist and a designer. Designers are told they are not artist and they need to stop thinking they are artist. When dealing with art and design specific demographics and viewers interpret the messages of each subject in different ways. Art is said to be elucidated and design is said to be understood. Artists usually develop a work of art with the intention of bringing an emotion viewpoint, instinctive feeling, and or state of mind. When you look at an artist work it cannot be limited to just exhibiting one individual thought or just one individual meaning. That is a big difference when it comes to graphic design. Graphic design usually has a very specific goal and point to make. When dealing with graphic design there should not be any room or space for any mixed messages or multiple meanings. The audience of the design should immediately understand the design that the designer created. Art connects to people differently in so many ways. The only reason it connects to people in different ways is only because it is interpreted differently.
Carpenters have been around for a very long time. Carpentry is mentioned in the Bible several times, which lets you know it is a very old occupation. It has been described as one of the earliest occupations and trades that are still practiced today. Even though woodworking and woodcarving developed more recently into an art, man has long used woodworking to better their lives. The word “carpenter” has its roots in ancient times being a derivative of the ancient Latin word “carpentrius” meaning “maker of a carriage.” The Chinese, who are thought to be one of the earliest civilizations to use carpentry, date their woodworking back to 720 B.C. Many details were developed during this time by the Chinese. They used precise measurements to make pots, tables, and other pieces of furniture from wood. We know about the Egyptians and their knowledge of carpentry thanks to archaeologists unearthing many woodcarving pieces found in Egyptian tombs. Some archaeologists believe that the Egyptians were the first to put "finishes" on their wood workings. Finishing is putting some type of protective sealant on your wooden material to preserve it longer. The Roman’s carpenter’s tools included raps, adzes, and saws. The knowledge of woodworking possessed by the Egyptians, Chinese, and Romans was most certainly spread to other parts of the civilized world in ancient times.
Interior design is a complicated profession. It is sometimes referred to as interior architecture and often confused with interior decorating. It involves the design, organization and planning of an interior structure rather than just refinishing and furnishing existing interior spaces. It involves managing a business, hopefully meeting the desires of the client and delivering to them an interior environment that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. There is a lot more to interior design than first meets the eye.
