We all dream of the day that we will be the one behind the wheel of a car with the windows down, your hair blowing everywhere, and the radio singing softly, but have you ever thought when that freedom will come to an end. It might be devastating having this independence taken away that you’ve always been excited for. However, the time will come when the car keys need to stay on the rack for your own good and for the safety of others. The positives of taking away this major freedom would be to prevent accidents that may occur, to stop the drivers that have dreadful impairments, and a way to provide new information about road laws this also helps retain information they may have learned back in the day. We all witness aging on our own face, on the car we drive, and even on the plants and animals we take care of. Aging is inevitable, which means people start to develop eyesight differences, hearing loss, and even the reflexes start to go. “Some of the changes you experience as you get older can affect your ability to drive safely. The good news is that people who keep track of changes in their eyesight, physical fitness, and reflexes may be able to adjust their driving habits so they stay safe on the road” (Older Drivers). People need to keep watch the older family members that are driving around town. They need to track when they notice loss in eyesight, hearing, and even their reflexes in the family members, if these start to worsen then you need to sit down and assess the changes taking place and decide together if the car should stay in the garage from now on. Another thing that happens with age is inflammation in the joints, known as arthritis. This disease can be in the hands, the hips, and even the feet, nearly 40 million americans suffer from arthritis but they do still drive. The only thing concerning about driving with arthritis is the stiffness and pain it brings to people. “Having arthritis can make your joints swollen and stiff, which can limit how far you can bend or move your shoulders, hands, head and neck. Another majority of drivers took their driving school courses back when they were in high school, the other half of those learned to drive from family members, friends, and even car dealers. There is an exceptional amount of time between then and now, laws change and memories start to fade away. “In 1932, Amos Neyhart, an industrial engineering professor at Pennsylvania State University, established driver education courses at State College High School, located near the Penn State campus in State College, Pennsylvania” (Driver Education). More high schools started following in the footsteps of Neyhart by adding special courses about driving. Schools did this in hopes that it would develop more skill on knowing the road laws, to help the behavior of drivers, and to help reduce the number of accidents that occured back then. “In many high schools, there were not enough teachers for one-on-one experience behind the wheel of a car. Driving simulators filled this gap by the 1950s” (Driver Education). Back then it was not the easiest to receive information on how to drive, this means those drivers that learned the laws back then were not able to get the full potential out of driving school.
