I personally don’t think that, but I do know there are many ways to waste time on electronics. Just like there are ways to use social media productively by showing awareness or creating a community there are also ways that it can waste time. Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are just a few examples are social media apps/websites that teens can waste hours on. Time can go by much faster than you think just scrolling through some of your friends spring break pictures or watching that cute video of the kittens playing with a ball of yarn over and over again. There are also the apps like Youtube that you can waste your time watching endless videos on things you don 't even know how you got to. Another way to use screen time negatively that comes in app form are playing time wasting games. The world of games is vast, and there are so many different types of games that you can play in different places. I am talking specifically about games you play on electronics. I like to divide games into 2 groups; long term and short term. There are more short term games, but teens spend more time on long term games. I like to think of short term games as the games that you play when you have nothing to do or are procrastinating. They are the quick (depending on how many times you play them) games, that sometimes have levels, that you can play get a high score on and just delete when you just don 't like them
“Get off your phone.” “I’m taking that laptop away.” Many children have dealt with their parents barging into their rooms and telling them to get off their electronics. Parents believe it is not healthy and therefore should be restricted. The two articles, “Blame Society, Not the Screen Time” by Dana Boyd and “Don’t Limit Your Teen’s Screen Time” by Chris Bergman, both talk about how parents should not limit their kid’s screen time. Both authors are writing to parents of children who they think spend way too much time on their electronics. However, Dana Boyd has a much better compelling argument for not restricting teenager’s screen time. Boyd has a much better appeal to both audiences. She manages to employ better uses of both pathos and logos
First of all, using electronics causes people to get distracted. According to Nicholas Carr, in the article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” from The New York Times Upfront, “When we use our computers and our cell phones all the time, we’re always distracted.”This sentence stated by Nicholas Carr contributes to my claim of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week.” For instance, when students are at home using their electronics they get distracted from doing their homework. This is a way technology is affecting many students. This article by Nicholas Carr supports my argument of participating in “Shut Down Your Screen Week” because many students do get distracted while using electronics causing them not to do their work.
Every evening after school I would flee home to the confinements of my room and bury my face in the bright white light of the iPad; and everytime I put it down, there was this biting restlessness to pick it up again. My social life diminished as my hours wasted on the iPad began to rise, and I began to feel the lost energy from many late nights. Though after months, an epiphany came. I awoke to find a naive middle schooler whose life was filled with nothing but the waste that fills much of Netflix and YouTube. I then asked my Mother to take the iPad away and almost magically my quality of life improved: I did better in school, went out with friends, and felt energized throughout the day. Yet, I worry. In Jean Twenge’s article, “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” he says, “More comfortable in their bedrooms than in a car or at a party, today’s teens are physically safer than teens have ever been. They’re markedly less likely to get into a car accident and, having less of a taste for alcohol than their predecessors, are less susceptible to drinking’s attendant ills.” While this does cause them to be safer, many of them don’t develop satisfactory communication skills considering most of them do not talking to others in person. They also do not learn how to use their body language to properly convey emotion. More evidence for phones not being too harmful comes from Lisa Guernsey’s article, “Don’t Take Away Your Teen’s Phone,” she says, “’I know how easy it is to find negativity and hurt on the internet,’ my daughter told me. But, she added, ‘it is also through the internet, on sites like Tumblr, where teens often find comfort and can engage in discussions of how they are feeling.” While this might paint social media usage in a warm light, people should think of all the pain that comes from usage of social media as well. A point from Jean’s article illustrated this point, “You might expect that teens spend so much time in these new spaces because it makes them happy, but most data suggest it does not.” This points out the fact that even though teenagers spend a lot of time on their phones, it is not
Danah Boyd, a principal researcher at Microsoft Research, has spent over a decade observing young people’s interactions with technology and how they tend to use it in their daily lives. In her article, “Blame Society, Not the Screen Time,” Boyd approaches an ongoing debate: whether or not teens engage in too much screen time during today’s age of evolving technology. Boyd’s purpose in writing the article is to argue that teens should not be blamed for their consumption of screen time; we should blame society for overwhelming teenagers with heaps of daunting responsibilities, which in turn forces them to retreat to digital entertainment. That is almost half a day and a lot longer than most people sleep or work. People have not yet realized how they or their families are being affected by this constant use of technology. Technology use was on the rise but has shown a significant increased rate in recent years. Technology was a beneficial tool that was used on a daily basis. Technology industries had developed many devices like computers, laptops, smartphones, iPods, and many other devices that made technology easier to access from anywhere and anytime. Technology expanded every day and the usage increased which had an effect on society especially targeting teens. Teens abused the use of technology that caused them to have serious problems mentally and physically. Teens mainly focused on technology use and caused a social disconnection from the real world. Technology use has a negative effect on teens by causing health problems and social disconnection.
Albert Einstein quoted, “It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” The use of technology today is affecting our future generations by introducing them fast into using technology. Today’s society is very addicted to technology, that studies indicated that 2013 is the year where some human beings have an internet disorder. In addition, people who have internet disorder suffer from this condition. However, people who are overly attached to the use of technology makes them more prone to anxiety, physiological disorders like cyber bullying, and clutched to that electronic device would dominate home life.
