Violence Against Women Violence and abuse affect women from all kinds of backgrounds every day. It is a burden on numerous sectors of the social system. It costs nations fortunes in terms of law enforcement, healthcare, lost labor and general progress in development. Violence against women includes intimate partner violence and sexual violence which are the major violations against women’s rights. There is an unequal position of women relative to men in our society. Use of violence is considered normative to resolve conflicts. The UN Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women states that: “violence against women is a manifestation of historically unequal powers between men and women”. There are some factors that lead to violence against women.Domestic against women is an age old phenomena. Women were always considered weak, vulnerable and in a position to be exploited. Lowerlevels of education leads to the perpetration of sexual violence. Also, there are cases of exposure to violence between parents.Childhood maltreatment maybe by parents makes one experienced in violence. There are those with multiple sexual; partners leading to cases of infidelity. There are also attitudes of accepting violence and gender inequality. Intimate partner violence may result from part history of violence. Some partners may also be dissatisfied in the marriage. Communication is also a key problem between partners. The United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence against women is an occasion for government, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations. Various activities are organized around the world to eliminate violence against women. These activities may include setting up projects to enablewomen and their children to escape violence. There are also campaigns that are held to educate people about the consequences of violence against women. At the local level, women’s groups play a vital role by organizing rallies, fundraising activities and presentation of research on violence against women is conducted.
