The Society of St. Vincent De Paul’s mission
St. Vincent was raised in France by relatively poor parents in the year 1850. He attended the University of Toulouse after receiving the majority of his education from the Franciscan Fathers at Acqs. However, an unfortunate event would transpire and provide difficulty in his life. He was captured by African pirates while on a voyage abroad. He was instructed to become a Tunis slave. In the midst of all the turmoil occurring in his life, he never abandoned God and grew stronger in his relationship with God. God rescued him from bondage which inspired him to evangelize and preach the Word of God. He was an avid advocate in charity work and was determined to aid the poor. Jesus gave us the Beatitudes to instruct all people to clothe the naked, feed the hungry, visit the imprisoned, etc. Their mission is also intertwined with the corporal works of mercy. The corporal works of mercy refer to the physical body of another. We are called to provide for those who cannot provide for themselves. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is dedicated to rehabilitating families in the local community by providing quality meals, clothing, housing, and spiritual healing. These families may have experienced violence, are homeless, and are unjustly oppressed by the surrounding individuals. The Society provides medical care, food boxes, and general care. Jesus commanded that we serve the least of God’s people. He gave us the Beatitudes as instructions that we are to abide by. Vincent de Paul is similar to charities, but have distinct differences. For example, individuals who volunteer at the Society are pursuing a personal relationship with God as well. As St. Vincent de Paul proclaimed, "The Society has two aims: to do a great deal of spiritual good to its members through the exercise of charity, and to do a little spiritual and temporal good to a few poor families in the name of Jesus Christ. Many charities are not focused on advancing their spiritual relationship however, they are concerned with helping others. This is not necessarily a negative quality of charities, it is merely not their primary goal. Everyone involved with the St. Vincent de Paul Society has goals for themselves and others. St. Vincent de Paul promoted this objective by stating, “In uniting to serve our masters the poor, our object is not only to relieve material misery, a very laudable purpose in itself, but to aspire, especially, through the practice of that most sublime of virtues "charity" to render ourselves better and more fervent Christians, and to make our poor enter on the same path, if we have the happiness of succeeding."
