When somebody is being unappreciative that makes someone feel bad . In “The Jacket” by Gary Soto there is a little boy who is being very unappreciative of a jacket his mom got him and it probably makes her feel really bad about her jacket decision for her son. First, Even though it was cold, I took of the jacket during lunch and played kickball in a thin shirt, my arms feeling like braille from goosebumps. But when i returned to class i slipped the jacket on and shivered until i was warm. I sat on my hands, heating them up,while my teeth chattered liked a cup of crooked dice. Although they didn't say it,”Man that’s ugly,”I heard the buzz-buzz and even laughter that i knew it was meant for me.The boy is assuming that the gossip others are spreading is about him rather than realizing that he has a perfectly fine jacket that should not let define him. This poor assessment of the boy is causing more negativity towards his looks and his actions. Next,I blame that jacket for those bad years.
I blame my mother for her bad taste and her cheap ways. It was a sad time for the heart. With a friend I spent my sixth-grade year in a tree in the alley, waiting for something good to happen to me in that jacket, which had become the ugly brother who tagged along wherever I went. And it was about that time that I began to grow. My chest puffed up with muscle and, strangely, a few more ribs. Even my hands, those fleshy hammers, showed bravely through the cuffs, the fingers already hardening for the coming fights. But that L-shaped rip on the left sleeve got bigger, bits of stuffing coughed out from its wound after a hard day of play. I finally Scotch Taped it closed, but in rain or cold weather the tape peeled off like a scab and more stuffing fell out until that sleeve shriveled into a palsied arm. That winter the elbows began to crack and whole chunks of green began to fall off. I showed the cracks to my mother, who always seemed to be at the stove with steamed-up glasses, and “she said that there were children in Mexico who would love that jacket.” I told her that this was America and yelled that Debbie, my sister, didn’t have a jacket like mine. I ran outside, ready to cry, and climbed the tree by the alley to think bad thoughts and watch my breath puff white and disappear. one just like his. Therefore the boy needs to be thankful for the jacket he does have because he is very fortunate compared to what some people have. Finally, The lesson or moral in this text is to be appreciative of what you have in life instead of what someone else does not have in life because you could be a kid that does not have anything to keep you warm when it is cold outside, or you might have to stay somewhere you don’t want to stay.

Schoemperlen further builds up the plot as the main character discloses every detail that she can remember about the shirt, as well as many other articles of clothing. She went to college after high school and didn’t return home after she graduated. She got married to a Muslim man and she became so concerned with her family’s history. When she arrived, she became so concerned with taking pictures of the farmhouse she grew up in a soon as she got their she didn’t even greet her mother and sister Maggie right away. When she entered the home she immediately began to scan the room for things that she felt were good enough to go into her apartment in the city, she also wanted included things that she felt were good enough to impress her friends and to show her where they are from. When she reached the home, she mentioned a few things that stood out to her which included a butter churn and 2 quilts. The two quilts in particular stuck out to her because the two were hand sew by her grandmothers and aunt , along with her mother. Maggie her sister states, “She can have them, Mama,” She said, like somebody used to never winning anything, or having anything reserved for her. “I can member’ Grandma Dee without the quilts’” (Walker). In the “Jacket” by Gary Soto, illustrates the theme of alienation by showing his depression through an ugly green jacket which he subsequently thinks everyone doesn’t like him for. In the beginning of the story the main character which I assume to be Soto, describes how big of an effect a jacket has on a kid in a school. “I remember the green coat that I wore in fifth and sixth grade when you either danced like a champ or pressed yourself against yourself a greasy wall, bitter as a penny towards the happy couples.” This is a great way to start out the story right into it they’re setting the point of how important having a nice jacket in this school is. Imagery like “several thousand little girls will be working in textile mills, all the night through, in the deafening noise of spindles and the looms spinning and weaving cotton and wool, silks and ribbons for us to buy” illustrates the harsh conditions that the children are forced to work in. By describing this for her audience, Kelley clarifies how poorly the children are forced to live due to the lack of laws. Another example of this is her description of a little girl who, “on her thirteenth birthday, could start away from her home at half past five in the afternoon, carrying her pail of midnight luncheon”. The emphasis on the innocence of children portrays the pity and sympathy that the audience should feel. She creates a scenario that seems much too real when she says “The children make our shoes in the shoe factories; they knit our stockings, our knitted underwear…They carry bundles of garments from the factories to the tenements, little beasts of burden, robbed of the school life that they may work for us.” By going into detail about what kinds of work the children do at work helps to open up the audience’s eyes to a perspective that is more personal and in-depth than Kelley merely lecturing them. In doing this, Kelley is able to invoke a sense of guilt that the audience members share. Consequently, the audience members thus feel the need to make change and rid themselves of the guilt they feel by allowing the continuation of children’s forced
In Craig Thompson’s book Blankets we look into his own life and his reflection on his past experiences and how that has made him the person he is. In the book we follow Craig as he journeys from being a child where he faced many challenges with his brother, to now being older and dealing with issues of love and faith. Craig in the book ends up being with a girl called Raina, who he grows feelings for. In the book, however it is truly unclear whether they truly loved one another or simply felt lust for each other.
Since the story uses a certain object, the Jacket, as the meaning of several issues, it primarily focuses on the narrator's poverty-stricken family. First of all, an example of the poverty is demonstrated when the narrator complains that the jacket "was so ugly and big that I knew I'd have to wear it a long time"(paragraph 3). It is clear that his lack of money was a problem in which he would have to keep the jacket because he could not afford a new one. The narrator then feels embarrassed and upset by the jacket by stating "I blame my mother for her bad taste and cheap ways"(paragraph 10). “I am a large, big boned woman with rough, man-working hands” Mama describes of herself in the short story Everyday Use by Alice Walker. Mama, who additionally takes the role of narrator, is a lady who comes from a wealth of heritage and tough roots. She is never vain, never boastful and most certainly never selfish. She speaks only of her two daughters who she cares deeply for. She analyzes the way she has raised them and how much she has cared too much or too little for them, yet most of all how much they value their family. Mama never speaks of herself, other than one paragraph where she describes what she does. “My fat keeps me hot in zero weather. I can work outside all day, breaking ice to get water for washing” (Walker, 60). She does not need to tell readers who she is, for her descriptions of what she does and how her family interacts, denotes all the reader needs to know. Although Mama narrates this story rather bleakly, she gives readers a sense of love and sense of her inner strength to continue heritage through “Everyday Use”.

But the lack of our 5th grade teachers knowledge, we did get recess. This recess was longer than our elementary school recess which was the best part of it. Throughout the year our recess got even better, after the many snow days, they ended up making our recess longer to make up lost time from the snow.
