A COMPARISON OF DIVERGENT, THE MOVIE, AND DIVERGENT, THE BOOK
1. Divergent, the Book
Divergent is a science fiction novel written by a female author, Veronica Roth. It is the debut in a trilogy by the same author and the series is known as Divergent Universe. The others are Insurgent and Allegiant. Divergent was published in 2011 by HarperCollins Children’s Books. It is targeted at young adults and is set in a post-apocalyptic scene which requires a relatively imaginative mind in order to be in sync with the author’s story. Divergent simply means a rare situation where an individual possesses two personality traits but, fortunately or unfortunately, has to choose one which to live with and by.
Tris (initially Beatrice Prior) is faced with a choice that she will commit to for the rest of her life. Like everyone else in the dystopian world of Chicago, she has to make this decision at only sixteen. There is a set date every year for all aged sixteen years to make this decision by taking a kind of aptitude test and having a serum administered to them. They have to choose virtues to abide by from five factions which are Dauntless (brevity), Erudite (intelligence), Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peacefulness) and Candor (honesty). In addition, there is a Divergent group and there are those who are factionless.
After the test results are out, these teens must choose whether to remain in their previous family faction or join a new one. The serum also helps to recommend the faction they most fit in. Beatrice was born in a family that belongs to the Abnegation faction.
When she becomes Tris, she joins a group to help her train and develop her identity in this society that defines its citizens according to the factions they belong to. I...

Further, the movie is faster paced to fit in as many fragments as possible within the time alloted. Thus, several changes have been made to make this possible and still make an effort to tell the original story. Reading the novel and watching the film will definitely feel somewhat different to a keen mind that is ready to analyze and criticize.
3.4 Dates
The book came first. It was published on April 25 2011while the movie was released on March 18 2014. This is only just appropriate since there had to be a book for the movie to be adapted from.
In conclusion, the movie could have done better in its quest to reveal Veronica Roth’s fantasy. A big appreciation still goes out to the director for trying to bring the novel to visual reality and light up our silver screens with imaginations of the future.
Second there is more detail in the book than the movie. Well, I think that more detail is better because the more you know the better you understand the movie or
Tris changes from being unsure and weak to a strong, brave, and determined in the book, Divergent. In the beginning of the story, Tris thinks she is not selfless enough to be in Abnegation. She is even more confused as her aptitude test determines she is divergent, a person who has more than one personality type who is suited for more than one faction. As she transfers to Dauntless, Tris realizes that she is at a disadvantage in Stage One, which involved physical activity. She is short and scrawny, and she doesn’t excel in an of the exercises alongside losing the fights. This threatens her chance of passing initiation. As a result of this sudden change, Tris misses her caring family. However, Tris doesn’t mourn and drown in self-pity. Instead,
In conclusion, details involving the characters and symbolic meanings to objects are the factors that make the novel better than the movie. Leaving out aspects of the novel limits the viewer’s appreciation for the story. One may favor the film over the novel or vice versa, but that person will not overlook the intense work that went into the making of both. The film and novel have their similarities and differences, but both effectively communicate their meaning to the public.
First of all, in order to have an interesting story you will have to have a tone of voice that contributes equally to the meaning of the story. According to Divergent, “I want to be brave, and selfless, and smart, and kind, and honest.” This quotes supports the idea that Tris can in fact fit into all factions and therefore is divergent. Tris, faces with this conflict of being divergent since it is looked down upon. But, even though she faces this serious situation, she has a strong and powerful mindset throughout the journey.
In the beginning of the book Tris has to make a very tough choice of which faction to go to. She has a very hard choice because her aptitude test results did not tell her just one faction she is most like. This choice can affect her life. Veronica writes “ I stare into my own eyes for a moment. Today is the day of the aptitude test that will show me which of the five factions I belong in. And tomorrow, at the Choosing
The Divergent Series is a novel by Veronica Roth that is set in a sort of dystopian future society that in actuality is Chicago that is being used like a type of experiment. You basically get sorted into these groups called factions where you will live out the rest of your days. But if you choose to leave you will become factionless which is the equivalent of homeless presently. You take a test to decide which faction you are best suited for. Once you have chosen you go through an initiation process. If you choose the faction you weren’t born into you can’t contact anyone from your old faction.
Dauntless she realizes that her being in her new faction has brought out her Abnegation side.
Tris finds out about how Four only has four fears and that his aptitude test was for abnegation, but he chose dauntless as his faction. “He says, ‘I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren’t all that different. All your life you’ve been training to forget yourself, so when you’re in danger, it becomes your first instinct. I could belong in Abnegation just as easily” (Roth, pg.336). It illustrates that even though Tris is struggling with the identity of having or not having divergent in her life, it looks like Four is struggling with the exact same thing. The universal theme of when people are trying to find themselves, the best way to know who you are is to first know who you care about. This applies to everyone because many people are confused on where they belong or who they are, so they just need a little reminder. This situation relates to the universal theme because Tris and Four don’t know where they belong in and who they are as a person. The words “selflessness,” “bravery,” and “danger” has a positive connotation and implies that the author is trying to say that to find where you belong to is a hard thing to do and it might be difficult along the way, but at the end it's worth it because you find who you are.. When Tris was still figuring out who she is, with the help of Four she figured out that having many factions is ok and being divergent is unique. The universal theme clearly shows that when you are struggling to find yourself or where you belong in, it’s best to welcome people to help you figure it
The book and the movie were both very good. The book took time to explain things like setting, people’s emotions, people’s traits, and important background information. There was no time for these explanations the movie. The book, however, had parts in the beginning where some readers could become flustered.
In Divergent Beatrice is an outcast along with many others for something they cannot control. If we put this in school terms, people who might dress funny, Divergence, get bullied by the cool kids, Erudite. Although the Divergence are portrayed as the unacceptable people, they can also be portrayed as the only acceptable people in society. You point of view can change the way you see
In the morning, after the injection, Tris awakes to her best friend, Christina, and the rest of her roommates acting in a congruent manner. She soon realizes “...every Dauntless was injected yesterday. So now the entire faction is brain-dead, obedient, and trained to kill. Perfect soldiers” (Roth 418). Tris’s divergence means the injection does not affect her and she must imitate non divergents so she is not caught. The Dauntless are being programmed by Erudite to attack Abnegation, in order to overtake them from their government position. Tris has to be brave during this frightening situation and find a way to stop them. Four, whose divergence is discovered during this event unites with Tris to try and find help. They soon come across Eric, leader of Dauntless, which turns into a terrifying meetup. Because Eric is not in a sleepwalking trance, he jokingly talks with a member of Erudite about shooting Four. This joke turns into a reality and just before Eric pulls the trigger, Tris makes a decision that puts her in a life or death situation. She points her gun at Eric. Tris has now revealed she is not in a brain-dead state to save Four. Quickly, Tris is sent to be drowned in a glass container that gradually fills up with water, just like the one in her fear landscape. Tris has taught herself to control her breathing
In this novel, Tris shows us that being “normal” is in fact impossible since there is no “normal”. As a child, Tris felt out of place and outcasted in Abnegation because she knew she didn't belong in there. Changing fractions didn't allow it to be easier for her to fit in at any place at all, she was a deviation to society and didn't belong anywhere. But that didn't stop her from finding her friends Christina and Al, and it certainly didn't stop her from finding her love Tobias Eaton. Initially, Tris tried to pretend she was dauntless by getting tattoos and wearing tight clothing. Eventually, she changed her entire sense of style into something she wasn't used to in order to fit in. Us teenagers, also dress based on how the media and society says teenagers dress, and we're all willing to spend $1000 on the newest iPhone not since we need it, but since we want it. The truth is we're not much different from Tris Prior, in a way all of us just want to be in the crowd, our own motives are personal but our objective isn't. Closer to the end, we find Tris stop following what the commoners do, she knew if she actually was one of them, she would also be under simulation and unable to control herself. In time, her divergence became her greatest power once she used it as a weapon. We all found Tris fighting in the end to save Abnegation, even though both parents were dead. Any logical person would leave and save themselves while they could, but Tris wasn't them, she was totally different. In conclusion, Tris saved the lives of so many innocent people and that was enough for her, Tris showed us how little we could accomplish if we were similar to everyone else. She also showed us how much more we could achieve if we decided to fully embrace
The most remarkable thing about literature is its effect on society and the individual. Every once in a while a book is published that truly relates to those who read it. Divergent just so happens to be one of those books. Divergent is an extreme take on the differences of what virtues humans value to form the perfect society. The book’s contents are almost philosophical, acting as sustenance for the heart and soul, meanwhile highlighting the many problems we face in modern society through quotes in a subliminal fashion that coincide wonderfully with the story. One such quote can be found on pg.441 and it reads ‘’ Human beings as a whole cannot be good for long before the bad creeps back in and poisons us again.’’ It almost breaks the 3rd wall. Human beings were born with both flaws and goodness. We are a double edged sword with extreme potential on both points. Deep down there is something dark in everybody. There are those who can control it and those who are weak and succumb to it.
When someone reads Divergent they become enraptured in a world of morality, family, loss, love, war, but above all a journey of self discovery. Our whole class was enthralled by the exhilarating journey that Tris went through and were eagerly awaiting the chance to see Divergent come to life on the big screen. Our expectations for this movie were fairly high, but unfortunately our expectations were thrown into the chasm just like Al.
Like any typical teenager, she makes a lot of “I” statements that makes her seem self-centered such as, “I still look like a little girl [Roth 2].” She is overshadowed by her brother’s, Caleb Prior, selflessness that often led to her thinking of only what she wanted. However, later we are able relate to Tris because we feel a kinship with her, especially when she decides to get her first tattoo: three ravens positioned from her collarbone to her heart, each one representing a member of her family she left behind. The raven tattoo also symbolizes her original fear of choosing a new faction and becoming her own person. Later, she decides to get the Abnegation seal tattooed on her right shoulder which shows her final acceptance of the Abnegation faction being a vital part of her life and who she is. At this point in the novel you can also see that Tris is not about herself. She accepts the role her family plays in her past, but instead of dwelling on that past; she embraces it and moves towards what her future
