Spirituality and Nursing The purpose of this assignment is to pick a patient or someone who would be a patient and focus on how their spiritual belief or religious beliefs and needs would affect their current or future health care. While also including what my own thoughts about what I think spirituality and religion mean.
My beliefs As someone who grew up in a home that was not spiritual or religious, my views on what spirituality and religion are come from what I have seen, read, understand and personally believe. Now you can look up the definitions of spirituality and religion in Merriam-Webster which says, “the quality or state of being concerned with religion or religious matters: the quality or state of being spiritual” which is a pretty simple statement for spirituality and for religion it states “an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods”. Spirituality to me is something you feel within you as a person and is not something that is an organized group. Catholic tradition understands health as holistically; it is spiritual, psychological, physiological, and also has social aspects. Some Catholics believe that suffering from a sickness or wound has a meaning and is a result of a person’s sinfulness. They also believe that death is a natural thing and is part of transitional stage to ones life; it should be respected and accepted with dignity. The religion also believes in organ donation and considers it a meritorious and noble act. They do not however believe in abortions, which I was aware, although to my surprise, they also do not believe in the use of a surrogate
