Spirituality and Nursing The purpose of this assignment is to pick a patient or someone who would be a patient and focus on how their spiritual belief or religious beliefs and needs would affect their current or future health care. While also including what my own thoughts about what I think spirituality and religion mean.
My beliefs As someone who grew up in a home that was not spiritual or religious, my views on what spirituality and religion are come from what I have seen, read, understand and personally believe. Now you can look up the definitions of spirituality and religion in Merriam-Webster which says, “the quality or state of being concerned with religion or religious matters: the quality or state of being spiritual” which is a pretty simple statement for spirituality and for religion it states “an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods”. Spirituality to me is something you feel within you as a person and is not something that is an organized group. Catholic tradition understands health as holistically; it is spiritual, psychological, physiological, and also has social aspects. Some Catholics believe that suffering from a sickness or wound has a meaning and is a result of a person’s sinfulness. They also believe that death is a natural thing and is part of transitional stage to ones life; it should be respected and accepted with dignity. The religion also believes in organ donation and considers it a meritorious and noble act. The Catholic view of euthanasia is that euthanasia is morally wrong. it has always been taught the importance of the commandment "you shall not kill". The church has said that "nothing and no one can in any way permit the killing of an innocent person, whether a foetus or an embryo, an infant or an adult, an old person, or one suffering from an incurable disease. disease, or a person who is dying. Spirituality is a major factor for many people when deciding their morals. Spirituality can have various definitions, depending on who is asked. It can be something as simple as looking for a higher meaning to life, or something so complex that one can base their beliefs, religion, morals and overall life around it. According to the Oxford Dictionary, spirituality can be defined as “relating to, or affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical things.” You can find this sense of spirituality in almost everything. Finding spirituality in something can make an individual feel enlightened and bring strong emotion and deep feeling. In comparison to the Oxford Dictionary, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary states that spirituality is “the quality or state of being concerned with religion or religious matters.” There is not one sole definition for spirituality because every individual has their own beliefs on what they think is spiritual.

Not only do they have to meet set standards, they must also take their patient into consideration. When making a decision upon a patient, medical staff must recognize religious backgrounds and spiritual beliefs. By understanding a patients’ beliefs and their belief system, a medical worker can give the patient their deserved medical assistance without overstepping boundaries or coming off as offensive. Even moreso it’s no surprise to learn about the movement among the vast number of clients seeking to address concerns of spirituality within their counseling sessions.
Spiritual experience has diverse meaning within different cultures and spiritual traditions. Spirituality may be conceptualized in as many diverse forms as there are people. For example, one individual may experience the sacred looking into the light in a child’s eyes, and another person may understand spirituality as praying during weekly services with religious community. Spirituality was often characterized and defined by its transcendent nature, and it may or may not have been derived from formal religious traditions as suggested by Palnte and Sherman (2001). That is, what were often understood as spiritual were those elements both in and beyond us that gave meaning and vitality of life’s events (Maugans, 1996). As Larson, Swyers, and McCullough (1998) suggested, spirituality is a multidimensional space in which everyone can be located, thus avoiding, as Miller and Thoresen (1999) clarified, taxonomies such as spiritual or not spiritual, and more or less spiritual. Similarly Conn (1987) defined spirituality as self- transcendence that gives integrity and meaning to life by situating the person within the horizon of ultimacy.

Webster Dictionary defines spiritualism as “a system of beliefs or religious practices based on supposed communication with the spirits of the dead, often times through mediums.” Though this is one general definition of spiritualism, this concept is one that does not hold a conclusive meaning. Each and every single person has the ability and right to create and practice their own idea of spiritualism.
