Religious Commitment in Healthcare
The Wounded Healer The wounded healer has a tremendous impact on the patient when there is a bond between himself and the patient. The practitioner embodies a likeness towards the patient and their affliction. They are able to reflect on the suffering they experienced themselves which contributes to the bestowing of compassion and care onto others. In doing so, the caregiver is also healing a part of themselves as well. The realization of their own mortality envelops them and the wisdom is gained regarding health, illness and dying (Pellegrino and Thomasma, pgs. 23-24). Within my own personal experience, I have struggled with infertility and with that comes the passion I have towards others who suffer the same as I have. Christianity helps us as deliverers of healthcare with an additional insight and motivation for performing good deeds unto others (pgs. 68 and 77). Philosophical ethics is based on the relationship between people whereas Christian ethics builds upon that and incorporates how God defines what relationships we are to have not only with each other, but Him as well (pg. 68). Both religious ethics and secular ethics deal with the same problems within healthcare (pg. 75), but delivering our actions with a Christian perspective helps keep our eyes focused on the selflessness of our intentions.
