I have always liked the idea of being able to be there for someone who is going through hard times, and listening to their problems and then trying to help them by giving advice. I have helped an online friend of mine get through some rough times that she was going through and continues to go through. I like the idea of trying to help people, even if it is over the phone. My thoughts on social work and workers use to be a thought that they only helped those who were poor or in trouble of hurting themselves or others. I used to think that I would never have to get involved with any of that. But that changed a few years ago for me. I got an insight to what social workers actually do to help others in everyday life. I want to share why I got an insight of what kind of people are in the social work category. My mom and step dad were in the middle of getting a divorce. My younger brothers wanted to be with their dad more than our mom. So, one day they were over at his house, …show more content…
Once we got there my step dad came out, looking like he had just woken up. There was yelling and arguing while my mom was on the phone with the police. I remember my step dad yelling at my mom that she couldn’t take the boys from him and was telling her to hang up the phone. He finally let us take the boys and we met up with who I’m guessing were private investigators or something like that. They pulled my brothers out of my mom’s car to talk to them about what had happened. And then the investigators told my mom to take us all home and they headed towards my step dads house. I never found out what
Introduction There have been some challenges in trying to figure out the right approach to follow in a research study, and this semester is more of an eye opener that reveals the expected ways in conducting research, which has been a very interesting and tough process. Dudley (2011). The four major search strategies available for locating references related to the chosen topic issues: (1) consultation, (2) searches in subject indexes, (3) browsing, and (4) footnote chasing. Researchers need to be aware of all of these strategies in information gathering. Question 1: What have you learned about research?
While discrediting social work’s narrative of empathy and conceptualizing the relational-cultural approach, Freedberg suggested that clinicians frequently misinterpret the act of setting boundaries as a process of empathy. I agree with Freedberg, setting boundaries is not empathy. When social workers talk about boundary they are usually talking about behavior and behavioral limitations, not the process of mutual connection. For example, saying, “I am not going to talk on your behalf” is setting a boundary. This act allows emotional distance and behavioral constraint. Unlike boundary setting, empathy, despite its different approaches, lacks the conscious act of doing something to achieve a result. Establishing boundaries is not harsh or uncaring, but it is a
One of the most common approaches used today by social workers is the strengths based perspective. Often time when trying to solve a problem, the main focus is on the problem itself and by doing so, there is a focus on the negative aspects and what is wrong. The strengths perspective tries shifting the view of situations by focusing on what the client may bring to the current situation. It tries to focus on the present and what the future may hold rather than what has happened in the past (Miley, O’Melia, & DuBois, 2015, p. 79).
The idea behind the concept map was to exemplify that all the domains of social work are interdependent of each other, through this; we attempted to demonstrate that values are embedded within these domains. We developed the idea of ‘the cycle of social work’, utilizing the concept of rain water precipitation, condensation and evaporation to demonstrate the relationship and the everlasting cycle of what social workers do, denoting that we as social workers have a wealth of values that must constantly ‘recycle’ as well as that each field can come from the same ‘sea’ of work. Our map included the following domains and references:
As an upcoming social worker I understand there are certain traits I portray that are strengths in the social work field. I also understand that were there are strengths, there are weaknesses. I did not realize what my strengths and weaknesses were until I began to practice in the field. Some strengths I have found in myself are good listening skills, ability to handle stressful situations, and time management skills. Along with those strengths I have found my weaknesses are speaking what I believe about a situation, procrastination, and taking on too much responsibility.
Before enrolling in the social work program at the University of Windsor I knew Social Workers helped people through unexpected life hardships. Now I know that social work is so much more than that. It is about advocating for people who cannot advocate for themselves and about trying to provide an equal opportunity for people regardless of their personal background. Social Workers challenge mainstream societal norms that negatively affect people and strive for social justice all around the world. Simply put, social workers provide a range of services for people in need. Social work as a profession differs from other professions because they deal with societies and the impact they have on people. Social work is a very broad profession and can
Therefore, the Social Work Profession’s point is that there is a social worker for everyone. Social workers have the potential to change someone’s life in the present or in the future, for an example a child being abused and being able to stop child abuse or to even prevent it can diminish a child’s chance of having a higher rate of drug or alcohol addiction, and reduce the possibility of criminal and teen pregnancy, but that is only just a little part of what they can do to help the community that they live and or work in.
My interest in social work stems from a love of volunteering that I possessed ever since I was a young child expressing great enthusiasm for church and school service events. As I grew older, I began volunteering for many other community events, such as serving over 200 hours at a local hospital, helping with free cancer screenings, and fitting children with free bike helmets. I even created my own donation drive for a local women’s and children’s shelter. I feel the best when I am striving to create positive changes in my community and for struggling, marginalized individuals. Social services have been a part of my life for a very long time, and I want it to continue to be on a professional level.

Research is a necessity when it comes to providing services. Social Workers need it to be able to determine their clients ' needs, to see what resources/services they have access to and if their client doesn 't have much access where can they get it. Research is also used to see how effective an intervention is and whether it would be a right fit for their clients. It provides social service agents with ways to identify problems within their clients, communities, organizations, and the government. Also it helps them to create ways to aid in effective change. It is very beneficial when a social worker needs to "assess the needs and resources of people in their environments, evaluate the effectiveness of social work services in meeting people
