Technology has greatly improved since the first computer was created. There are new cell phones that can connect to the internet and have access to different apps. Computers have evolved the idea of social media from simple chat rooms to websites like Facebook or Twitter which allow someone to connect people to the world wide web. With all of these new trends, people begin to craze over the new inventions or creations in masses. People now just have to press a button and update their status or add a new picture. People who use social media sites like Facebook and Twitter show signs of addiction.
To many social media users, they may not even now that they are addicted. They usually associate drugs with addiction, but in reality, addiction can be found in everything. Dr. Michael Bengtson, professor and chief of child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, claims that, "Addiction doesn't have to involve a substance or a drug. Since technology is now able to be wireless and portable, people can always check their profiles and and new photos. Yoffe posits people become addicted to the feeling of receiving a text message, a new tweet, an Instagram post, or other meaningless multimedia facets (Yoffe 599). Why We Crave Social Media I think that we are all lonely to some extent. We all seek human interaction but with the vast development of internet and social media, face to face interaction has been declining. Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives, whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, sleeping, or focusing on their own health and condition. However, these same students who are excessive users are often times the students who are more aware of global issues and updates in pop culture through the use of social media. Students who moderately use social networking applications spend a good amount of time on these applications and are still able to manage time for sleeping, practicing good eating habits, homework, and studying. These students are usually just as aware, or slightly less aware, than students who excessively use social networking.
