Introduction

The late 20th and early 21st century has seen a major increase in the use of smartphones world-widely. Smartphones are a present-day phenomenon and have never been as popular as now. Some individuals feel separation anxiety or fall into panic when they leave their smartphones at home by accident. Smartphones influence our productivity, make everyday tasks easier to do and some users have become highly dependent on them.

Smartphone could be expressed as “an extension of us, an important limb to our body” (1stwebdesigner). We take these all-in-one devices everywhere with us, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. They are used not only at workplaces or at schools but also at parties, on dates and even during sex. In this manner, humankind’s way of living, behaving and communicating is definitely influenced.

Smartphones

Apart from the basic functions typical for classic phones, such as voice calling, text messaging, alarm clock and organizer, today’s smartphone functionality extends broadly to high-quality camera and real-time video chat, mobile banking and accurate GPS navigation, as well as advanced gaming and personal training.

There are numerous possibilities how to take advantage of smartphone capabilities. Some of the functions are built-in, however tens of thousands more are available online to download directly to smartphone. These “apps” are either free or for low cost, usually from one dollar to ten dollars, occasionally more.

A modern smartphone is an all-in-one device. It combines several devices we used to use seperately even a few years ago. People tend to prefer smartphones because they are not only a communication tool, but also may serve adequately as a music player, a GPS navigation, a camera and a camcorder, a game console or a newspapers. A real advantage is in their complete portability.

As a negative consequence, people are being easily distracted by doing several unrealted activities at the same time.
