Today in the world, day by day, as we became more advance in technology, more and more people start using internet and internet devices on a daily basis. We use it for communication, social media, watching television and other. People start using the internet excessively without thinking of the consequence. As studies have show us that when we use more internet which causes anxiety and depression to us. A student could not stop using social media. Recent studies have shown that counseling to internet addiction can help to able to deal with their own problem. According to the study done by Youngster Internet Addiction and Counseling service among 59 internet addiction,”92% are able to deal with the problem after counseling”(Sek, Tang, & lo, 2009). Counseling help student to guide on the way where they can use less social media. They will more focus on talking with a friend directly instead of talking on Facebook. That help them to speak with a friend without any hesitation and fear. They will able to perform daily activities like the student who are not addicted to the internet. Cognitive-behavioural therapy can also reduce physiological problem caused by internet addiction. According to psychiatrist Aaron T. Studies have already shown watching movies can lead to obesity. If we play soccer, football, and other activities, we can obtain physical exercise which can lose weight instead, we gain weight by watching television and movies. More outdoor activities mean less time on a computer monitor. Even the recommendation of US government is that in order to become healthy we need at least 30 minutes of physical exercise(Watkin, 2009). Playing outdoor activities not only keep us energetic but also it can help to lose weight of a body. In addition, we should make habit of reading a book instead of looking at the computer monitor, which could not affect our health, instead, it going to sharpen our memory. Reading book is another way to spend time wisely than media consumption like watching television and movies. Cep, the internet is discussed very deeply, but in two varying lights. In the article by Cep the author is writing from personal experiences and research. In the article by Ross the author is writing merely from opinions.
In his article “internet addiction”, published in 2010 by Reason Magazine, Greg Beato tries to show how internet addiction, an excessive behavior brought up by the psychiatrist Ivan Gilbert, is an important issue for the society and why it should be considered as a behavior disorder. He supports his thesis by using a lot of evidence such as graphics, statistics, and researches. Although, Beato’s arguments about the causes of internet addiction and the reasons why it should add to the DSM are mostly true, some of his observations on the future are pessimistic.
As with any phenomenon, psychology must be interpreted to be understood (Burton, Westen and Kowalski, 2012, p. 3). Many physicians, physiologists and psychologists, such as Sigmund Freud, John Locke, Ivan Pavlov, and B. F. Skinner respectively, have developed and contributed to their own psychological perspectives which have carried on to the present day. This essay will explore the fundamental ideas, similarities and differences and strengths and weaknesses of both the psychodynamic perspective and the behaviourist perspective. This essay will then shift focus to internet addiction – what it is and how it can be explained. An intervention will then be developed for an individual suffering from internet addiction based on the behaviourist perspective.
The experiment was based on 1319 responses to an online questionnaire. People were asked how much they used the internet and for what purposes. The respondents were aged 16 to 51, with an average age of 21. The authors found that a small number of users had developed a compulsive internet habit, replacing real life social interaction with online chat rooms and social networking sites. They classed 18 respondents, 1.2% of the total as Internet addicts. This group spent more time on sex, gambling and online community websites. "This study reinforces the public speculation that over-engaging in websites that serve to replace normal social function might be linked to psychological disorders like depression and addiction."
As with any other disease, drug addiction causes stress and breaks down the body immune system. Not only does drug addiction break the body immunes system down but it also decreases brain function. In the book addiction treatment a strengths perspective, the authors Wormer and Davis stated, “Other remedies directed toward the physical side of drug use are more natural, holistic approaches. These include various herbal remedies, acupuncture, massage, hypnosis, and biofeedback.” (Pg 204) In my opinion, the holistic approach can be very practical for treating the disease of addiction because it will help people gain the proper balance for those who suffer from addiction.
Addiction to the Internet can be emotional for other people and can take an emotional toll. Researchers got some evidence of how being addicted to the internet can affect teens, “ Health studies also show that those who spend a lot of time online are more likely to experience depression.” (David Price) A study shows that teens who use the Internet may be about 2.5 times more likely to become depressed. But wait, there’s more! There’s more evidence of why the internet can cause an emotional problem, “ A slow internet connection or ‘unplugging’ can promote irritability and anxiety for a teen otherwise used to constant connection through technology.” (FCD Prevention Works) Because of being addicted to the internet, slow wifi can irritate teens by not having what they want fast enough. Only 13.9% of young men don’t view pornography, and of those who do, 51% of male students and 32% of female students first viewed pornography before age 13 (Gilkerson). 21.3% of college males watch it daily or multiple times a day (Gilkerson).
In Greg Beato’s article “Internet Addiction” originally published in august, september 2010 in to Reason magazine he argues that internet addiction is a problem in our society today. Internet addiction should be reported in the Diagnostic and statistic manual of mental disorder (DSM). It is a huge problem, he also says that internet is like narcotic drugs and very addicting. He states that if ones use Google for few minutes only it leads us to spend more than a few minutes on the internet and it turns in to spending hours. Beato refers that University of Maryland did a group study for 24 hour and all the students went crazy without their phones and iPods, one girl admitted that she is an addict. The students were anxious and miserable. He also says that one kid killed his parents because they took away his Xbox. Internet also leads to death of people, therefore it is a problem and we should put it on to the DSM.
Kershaw provides an example of the negative effect of Internet addiction in the article “Hooked on the Web: Help is on the Way”. Mike is a 34 year old man who addresses his Internet addiction problem and seeks treatment. Before seeking treatment, Mike struggled with alcohol and drug abuse and depression along with Internet addiction. He often spent countless hours using the computer to search news and sports information. He never felt it was a problem because he liked it so much and used it in his everyday life. However, Internet addiction started to impact Mike’s life. He became unemployed and lived with his mother. It also affected his social interaction; he would rather be on the computer than be around other people (Kershaw). Another case where computer addiction is found to be a problem is in some Asian countries. Elizabeth Cooney, in her article “Some People Need Help To Kick Their Internet and Computer Gaming Obsessions” reports that “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in girls and hostility in boys can predispose children to later Internet addiction, which they estimate affects 4 percent of children in Korea and 15 percent in China.” Furthermore, there have been reports of death due to Internet addiction as well.
