Similar to how there are many reasons why a student drops out, there are multiple effects that occur because of the drop out rate; when a student drops out, it can negatively affect the country financially. With the increasing amounts of students dropping out, the nation is struggling. “The nation can no longer afford to have more than one-quarter of its students leave high school without a diploma. High schools must be improved to give all students the excellent education that will prepare them for college and a career, and to be productive members of society” (Alliance). Schools are successful in the sense that they keep the already highly-motivated students motivated. It’s when it comes to the students who aren’t motivated— the students with low expectations, students with otherwise committed parents, students with physical and mental disabilities, and those who are just aren’t interested in the curriculum of school—the school seems to throw by the wayside. (Schargel and Smink 10). Schools need to focus more on the helping of the students who need motivation more than the ones who already have that motivation. One way to increase motivation is though connecting the school learning to the workforce. This practice is used by many countries is the connecting of schooling and working. This method actually a large factor that these countries have low-drop out rates. Not only does this help to prepare the student, it also keeps them engaged in the curriculum. In many countries, the schooling portion of the learning is completed at the age of fifteen or sixteen and then the students continue their education in the actual workforce like an intern until their early twenties (Hoffman). Using this method, students will not only enjoy their schooling, they will be focused and interested in what they are learning.
