Save the Children
I chose the topic of my written presentation Save the Children from organizations relat-ed to health. In my opinion this organization works for important cause because children are the future and they must be protect and helped globally and locally. In my opinion it`s adults duty to make the best to support children in their growth and development and support children in distress.
How closely are they related to your home country?
In Finland there is a Finnish chapter of Save the Children organizations national organi-zation. Finnish chapter was founded in 1922. This organization “fights for children’s rights in order to immediately and permanently improve children`s lives in Finland and all over the world” (http://www.pelastakaalapset.fi/en/).

Save the Children organization “invests in childhood, every day, in times of crisis and for our future”. Organization works globally and its task is to “give children a healthy start, the opportunity to learn and be protected from harm”. Also “transforming chil-dren´s lives now” organization target is to change course of the children future (http://www.savethechildren.org). Save the Children organization works together with members worldwide for example in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Middle-East. Chil-dren in 120 different country gets help, thanks for active worldwide organization and members.

Emergency response means that organization´s emergency responders are helping children for example when a natural disaster or war has threaten children health or even lives. In rich countries children are not in so big risk because in rich countries the social security offers safety and opportunities for families to survive economically and socially. In Finland some families or people are unfortunately in risk to be passed by. It influences to their children and children childhood. Fortunately different services and instances help people who are in risk to be passed by. Save the Children organization provides for example support family services, therapy and other help to families who are in trouble. What I am trying to say is that there are big differences in all this organization makes to help the children. Targets and task are partly different from globally and children problems and needs severity are dif-ferent globally and locally.
What factors affect that?
Partly I replied to this question in my previous writing. In my opinion wealth (money) and security factors in children home country affect to children nutrition, education, childhood, safety and to whole to their and their families lives. Also environmental fac-tors and social security are in key role when thinking this question and children living conditions. Save the Children organization and their partners are globally and locally working with these difficult problems and try to do their best to protect and help chil-dren.
How significant is the role of the organization in the
Children and companies worldwide have enhanced their abilities to help children who are at-risk in many parts of the country.
From that perspective, I will highlight the following programs that Save the Children does here in the United States alone. This organization have four main programs. First is health and nutrition, second is education, third is emergencies, and fourth is hunger and livelihoods. For health and nutrition, Save the Children is visiting schools, and other institutions giving lessons about balanced food and healthy food choices. In addition, education contributes 22% of their main programs. They have school-based literacy programs for disadvantaged students from kindergarten through 6th grade, specifically in reading, math, and science. They also provide tools and support schools in this advocacy. Another, in times of emergencies like natural disasters, Save the Children is visible. During the floods in the Gulf Coast region, they were there to give emergency assistance. The organization provide child-focused emergency plans, trainings, and emergency resources in preparation for coming disasters. Moreover, on the hunger and livelihoods aspect, the organization believes in not just giving fish, they also teach families how to fish. This in my opinion, is commendable. Not all organization have this advocacy. It promotes families to stand and support their families and not just depend on aids from private and public sectors.
There can be some improvements in how the police system is involved with the child abuse investigation, in order to allow the child welfare workers to focus on providing services to disadvantaged families. Since caseloads are high, most child welfare workers have limited time span to work and focus on the families’ issues such as, financial stability, social and emotional well-being of all family members. Implementing successful prevention strategies will require the need to provide assistance to the entire family and focus both on the child’s safety and well-being, as well as the parents’ emotional and economic well-being. Child welfare systems can provide resources such as child care services for single parents who lack education, which limits their employment. Such services can help the family become financially stable, and hopefully get out of living in poverty.
Life in the United States has been difficult for many children. Statistically speaking, there are four children who are killed by abuse each day (Allyn & Bacon, 2011). With numbers increasing over the years change is something that is starting to take place. There are many things that will affect the child welfare system in the future, such as the economic policies, political views, and the current policies set in place (child welfare information). The reason for the child welfare system is to help the children who are getting abused. In the past, there was not a policy set in place; however, this is beginning to change. One of the systems that have been set in place is the Children’s Bureau, an organization that does studies on the mental health of abused children (Thomas, 2012). Although this organization has no authority to develop federal regulations, they are one of the largest agency leaders in child welfare (Thomas, 2012). There are many problems with the economy and government that make it hard to maintain the child welfare system.
An estimated 8 million to 10 million infants and children live in orphanages around the world, and aid agencies, churches and governments provide hundreds of millions of dollars in the hope that they can help vulnerable children find sanctuary in these institutions. This hope is badly misplaced. Orphanages are not safe places for children. We have witnessed thousands of children who live in disabling conditions, with heartbreaking consequences. We have seen neglected babies who rock back and forth, bite their hands and gouge their eyes as the result of mind-numbing boredom and neglect. We have seen infants and children, unable to feed them-selves, left to starve because there is no one to feed them. In Romania and Turkey we found teens who weighed less than 30 pounds (Ahern).
War Child started in 1999 is based of United Kingdom. War Child’s mission is to reinforce and enhance the protection and livelihoods of children living in an insecure and poor environment.”
In the feature article "The Destruction of Childhood," the author, Langdon Winner, explains the brutal childhood of many children living in Third World Countries. The author points out several facts and surveys done many groups such as United Nations that show
Casa Hogar Sion (previously called El Faro) is an orphanage located in Tijuana, Mexico. It was opened in 1999 by Carmen and Jorge Lopez. The orphanage is a home to 120 children ranging from ages two months to 18 years old. My topic is mainly to raise awareness and funds to help out the orphanage. Throughout the year, I carried out different ways that I could do this. I had researched about the orphanage in the beginning of my project and contacted a member to let them know of the project. I chose to this project, because I was inspired by my teacher’s experience when he had gone to visit the orphanage. I wanted to inspire and help the children that he had spoke so fondly of. I have always wanted to do something that would benefit others and
...nment thus they experience diseases and poverty. The children must overcome all the challenges of being alone in the streets. These children have fewer resources and opportunities, and it is up to us to change if not improve their life on the streets. We may accomplish this by creating shelters and maybe by helping the children get cultured by all means. These children are simply kids and should be treated acceptably as the rest.
There is a need, to develop antipoverty programs. One of the antipoverty programs to make children access supplemental nutrition assistance program, hence reducing chances of future diseases caused by poor nutrition. Another way is to offer housing vouchers so that the children accompanied by their parent can move from concentrated poverty areas to lower poverty areas. Children Defense Fund in the United States is another program that aims at eradicating poverty in children, the programs aim at increasing employment for their parents, make work pay, and ensure children basic needs are met (Edelman,
Poverty is “the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions” (Merriam-Webster dictionary, 2015); in other words, struggling to provide a comfortable living style. It is the cause of family stress and many other problems, especially for the children. Millions of people around the world are struggling with poverty; families suffering to provide enough food seem to be growing in numbers. According to the United States Census Bureau, the poverty rate was highest in the 1960s and decreased greatly in the 1970s. However, it is now slowly starting to increase again. Recently released census data by the Bureau showed that one in five people are living in poverty (Census Bureau, 2014). Poverty is even
When analyzing children growing up in poverty a lot of factors come into play such as their physical, psychological and emotional development. To grow up in poverty can have long term effect on a child. What should be emphasized in analyzing the effects of poverty on children is how it has caused many children around the world to suffer from physical disorders, malnutrition, and even diminishes their capacities to function in society. Poverty has played a major role in the functioning of families and the level of social and emotional competency that children are able to reach. Children in poverty stricken families are exposed to greater and emotional risks and stress level factors.
Located in Guatemala almost half of the population dwells below the poverty line. This really affects the most severely the children of minorities. Living in hardship has many effects on the lives of those who have health problems, shortage on food, and a must to work. Guatemala doesn’t have any health care services to meet the needs of the entire community. Some health issues that specifically affect children are not able to be updated. For example, the death rate for infants are very high. Not to mention, it doesn’t have much of a support and personnel relevant for the country. The concern is for the health of the children, therefore, complicated to guarantee and famine are diverse and abundant. Many old ways are against to the need of
Poverty extends out over all continents, making it the most widespread negative factor. Out of the world’s 2.2 billion children, approximately half live in poverty according to UNICEF. Poverty claims approximately 22,000 children’s lives per day. This statistic illustrates the struggle children that live in poverty must face in order to survive. Poverty is a root cause of hunger, disease, and lack of shelter. It is concentrated in pockets in areas such as South Africa and South Asia. Children, who must...
Children who live in poverty not only lack money, but also common necessities. They live with constant hunger, dehydration and disease. Moreover, they lack opportunity, education, and hope. Even in this advanced, modern age, children on every continent are affected by the harrowing effects of poverty. Thankfully, Compassion International was founded to release children from the chains of poverty.
