Everyone has experienced resocialization at some point in their lives. No one goes through life completely unchanged by the people around them. My major resocialization occurred around the age of ten when I morphed from a homophobic, racist conservative into an extreme liberal. This was due to a person I met and my newfound love of the internet.
Resocialization occurs when a society changes a person’s thoughts, beliefs, and actions. This change can be lasting and shape who a person is or it can be impermanent and only affect who the person is when put in that social situation. “Learning new norms and values enables people to adapt, though newly learned things may contradict what was previously learned” (INSERT CITATION). Resocialization is the process by which people change and develop morals and values. “In adolescence, socialization is concerned with the development of overarching values and the self-image” (INSERT CITATION). Whenever I first heard of this, I was with my father, and his distaste for the subject quickly let me know that it was not okay for someone be romantically involved with someone of the same gender. It was from my father that I also learned my racism. We did not so much outwardly hate people of other races; we simply belittled them and joked about stereotypes. I was exactly what you would expect a child raised in the South by conservative parents to be: an ignorant conservative who did not know any better.
One day, my sister introduced me to one of her friends. He was loud, funny, and nice. I liked him immediately. Then, my sister told me he was gay. Until this moment, I had never met a homosexual person and now that I had, I was shocked. This was when I first thought that homosexuality might not be a bad thing. By being around him and by having my sister tell me his sexuality was okay, I was resocialized into no longer being
