Many people assume America was discovered when Christopher Columbus decided to sail a boat west in search of new land. It was much more than a “decision”. Developments were building for hundreds and hundreds of years. As a result, a new continent was built, the Americas. The Crusades began the journey, with religious riots. Soon after, the Renaissance rebuilt Europe with new ideas left and right. As soon as this began to settle, the Rise of the Absolute Monarchs transformed many parts of Europe. Eventually, the Commercial Revolution, created a new world for everyone!

Christians were mistreated. Mistreated by the Muslim Turks as they ruled Jerusalem in the early 1000’s. The Byzantine Empire was threatened. Pope Urban II made a stand: a speech was made for the Christians to take back Jerusalem. Thousands of people responded, resulting in an expedition to Jerusalem and associated territory, known as the very first Crusade. In this time, the Byzantine Empire collapsed. The Renaissance changed all of this. Many new ideas came from this period from people like Leonardo Da Vinci, Machiavelli, and Galileo. With all of this, there was loads of new knowledge to spread. This included voyages around the world to spread it, finding new routes along the way.

Europe was living in a time where the monarch had some, but not all power. This was soon changed when they gave themselves all power. This time was known as the Rise of the Absolute Monarchs. They even told those who opposed their power they had been given the divine right of kings, directly from god. Newfound complete power helped strengthen standing armies, improve trade and other types of commerce, and make important compromises with nobility and aristocracy.
