Philosopher Donald Shön argues that reflective practice is a dialogue of thinking and doing through which we become more skilful (Shön 1983, 31). According to Jürgen Habermas reflection is a tool used in the development of particular forms of knowledge (Moon 1999, 13). In this essay I will reflect upon my work experience with the NRK (Norsk Rikskringkasting AS), Norway’s largest media organisation, and reflect over what I have learned as well as how it made me develop as a journalist. I undertook a 10-days work placement at the NRK, which is Norway’s government-owned radio and television public broadcasting company. I did my placement in Trondheim, at one of the radio-departments called P1 and my work experience took part in two different radio programmes. As well as playing music, both of the programmes were focusing on what was going on in the society, but they were not concerned about breaking news, but rather ’every-day’ kind of news that could be of interest for people from all over the country. Professionals face complex and unpredictable situations; they need complex and diverse reflective and reflexive processes. Engaging in these critically will be reflected in the quality of their work (Bolton 2014, 2). According to Moon reflection is a part of counselling and, similarly, it underpins self-development (Moon 1999, 80). Through my work experience I did not just further develop my journalistic skills but I also found out that I am the sort of person that likes to work in a team but at the same time I like to have my own assignments to work on.
