William Golding uses Jack and Ralph’s characters to reveal the central idea of the struggle between order and chaos. From the beginning, Jack and Ralph have had a tremendous amount of tension because Jack was out voted for chief. This conflict keeps growing until they respect each other. As for now, the two boys will continue to argue and fight. Throughout the novel, Jack becomes violent and barbaric where Ralph takes on the role of chief and stays peaceful and righteous. The first instance where Jack can be seen as a barbian is when he states: “Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood” (Golding 69). Meanwhile, Ralph stayed calm and led the boys, created a plan, and followed through. He thought about the future and what to do while they waited for a rescue. Ralph has stayed calm and respectful with all the boys and understands what needs to be done. Initially, Ralph organized the boys and created rules for them to follow: “We’ve got to have special people to look after the fire. Any day there may be a ship out there. and if we have a signal going they’ll come and take us off. And another thing. We ought to have more rules. Where the conch is, that’s a meeting. The same up here as down there” (Golding 42). Ralph understood what needed to be done and made it happen even though the littluns and the choir would not assist. Furthermore, Ralph stayed calm and didn’t become mad while no one helped and was goofing off. Ralph got mad at Jack, when he let the fire go out. This was the same day that there was a ship. Ralph then said to Jack “You and your blood, Jack Merridew! You and your hunting! We might have gone home” (Golding 70).
