Purpose of Character in the Play “The Game” by Louise Bryant
Have you ever wondered what is would be like to have a conversation with Death or Life? To be able to ask questions that has always baffled you. Why do we live or die? What happens after we are dead or before we are born? Maybe the game played between the two major characters in this one-act morality play would bring into perspective these two concepts. A character is defined as “any personage in a literary work who acts, appears, or is referred to as playing a part” (Mays, 182). In this play Louise Bryant personified the concepts of Life and Death by giving them human characteristics or feelings to add to the drama that is going on between the two of them and also to make the audience see these concepts as relatable. Generally men are not patient, understanding, considerate, and tolerant. They tend to be egotistical, arrogant and set in their own ways just like Death in this play. The hint of inequality could be heard in his voice when he said, “I always said the Universe will be in a wild state of disorder if the women had any say!” (Bryant). I really can’t understand why most men assume and treat women as lesser beings. They forget all about the strength that lies in a woman. I honestly find it hard to believe that in this day and age, a lot of men still think women cannot do everything a man can do what with there being more women in politics, top level officials of fortune 500 companies; for example Hillary Clinton, who has at one time or the other been a Former First Lady, Secretary of State, and a US Senator. Men like Death should take back their “ You have no chance in the world” statement and realize that women are just as strong as they are and not to sound cliché, it is hard to find something a man can do that a woman cannot, might, and would not do
