Obesity has continued to grow and affect not only the lives of the individual with obesity and their families but also the society around them. We have learned that from the growth of obesity money problems arise and the price of health care has risen. I believe that because of this problem nutrition labels are an important part of food for consumers. People should be watching what they eat if necessary and nutrition labels should be trustworthy and looked at wisely. Since this is important I feel that the government should have a say to what goes on the labels and making sure that they are informative to the American society. The FDA, which is the US Food and Drug Administration, are part of the US government Department of Food and Health. Their goal and slogan is “Protecting and Promoting Your Health.” The FDA has a very important role in nutrition labels and the protection of helping people become aware of what they are eating. Since their role is important the government should definitely continue to regulate what goes on the labels and how they can continue to help bene...
I think that government’s only role in the matter is to provide people with the information they need to make their health decisions. Although Balko is against federal funding for food labels, I think that it is necessary for people to know exactly what they are eating, such as how many calories, fat, protein, etc. Once people are aware of what are good and bad, the rest is up to the consumer. There is no need for prohibiting junk food because the individual knows what their actions will result in, and what someone choses to eat is no one else’s
Knowledge is power, the more the consumer knows about the food they are eating the healthier choices they’ll make. For instance, in McDonald’s Grilled Honey Mustard Snack Wrap and a small French fry, from McDonald’s is around $6.00 and contains 420 calories 24g of fat (6.0g saturated). If you were to compare that to a Big Mac meals that comes with medium size fries and coke soda would be about 980 calories the Snack Wrap would be a healthier alternative and it would be about the same price $6.00. When fast food chains put labels on their food like McDonald’s consumers can’t
As labeled on the estimated daily calorie needs for adults chart, I am an active man under the group age of 19-30 years old. As per mentioned on the chart I need 3000 calories per day to remain healthy. After looking at Canada’s food guide, I became aware about the recommended number of food guide servings per day for various age groups.

Zinczenko shares his personal story about how fast-food restaurants such as Taco Bell and McDonald’s led to a weight problem during his high-school years. He claims that the ease of accessibility and lack of healthy alternatives make it all too easy to fall into the cycle of unhealthy eating. Zinczenko also contends that the lack of nutrition labels on fast-food products leaves the consumer in the dark about what he or she is actually consuming. At the time Zinczenko wrote his article, fast-food restaurants were not willingly disclosing nutritional values of their products. Today this has changed. Fast-food companies, including McDonald’s, have put the full nutritional information of their products directly on the packaging and wrappers. All other fast-food establishments either post it on the menu board (Panera), offer easy access to pamphlets containing all nutritional information of their menu in store, or have it easily accessible online (Taco Bell, KFC). I am sure that this is a helpful step forward toward educating the public as to what they are consuming, but has this new knowledge to consumers had a dramatic change toward ending obesity? No. People have always known that eating a Big Mac and fries with the giant soft drinks that McDonald’s and other chains offer is not healthy; putting the nutritional labels on these items has done little to nothing to stop people from eating these high-calorie meals. This again leads back to the point that people as consumers need to be more accountable to themselves and stop blaming others for what they willingly choose to put in their
Nutritionism and Today’s Diet Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Pollan’s main point is introducing science into our food system has had more of a negative impact than a positive one, we should go back to eating more of a traditional diet. I believe food science has given us
Michael Pollan makes arguments concerning the eating habits of the average American. Pollan suggests, in spite of our cultural norms, we should simply “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants.”
Nutritionism is an ideology that believes that the nutrients in foods are the key to understanding them. Nutritionism believers are so focused on the nutrients that food contains that they forget about all other aspects of food. The problem is that consumers rely on packaging to tell them what nutrients a food provides, since nutrients cannot be obviously seen, and they rely on science to tell us what nutrients are good and which are “evil”.
...ly look at the false claims made by food industries expand on their already set regulations, making it harder for companies to get around them. However, if the FDA believes that their regulations are as specific as they can get, then there should be at least somebody to educate consumers about food labels and add more detail to nutritional value charts. Because without changing the way how information is provided and educating people, they will not be able to change their diets to improve nations overall health.
It is day one of your weight lifting program and you are ready to start your body transformation. It is the best workout out there, but with all of this searching for a workout plan, do you have a solid nutrition plan? Nutrition is not only 90% of the battle when it comes to improving all the aspects of health and fitness. It can be the ultimate reason why you may not be seeing any results. Trust me, when I say that iit has taken me years to figure out what foods, how much to eat, and how often to eat. What makes this challenging is everybody is different. What may work for you may not work for me. Some people can get away with eating crap and not gain an ounce but with me if I have a piece of cake, I will gain 5 lbs. I am a creature
...ues. Because nutrition, obesity, and overweight have already turned into a matter of national concern, the government should definitely have a say in our diets, to give us access to healthier foods and to restrict availability of foods, which damage our health.
Daily, millions of people are perusing the grocery store, buying food for their families, completely unaware of what they are purchasing. A study on consumer research regarding food labels by the FDA found only a small percentage of people actually read the food labels and understand what they mean apart from only the calories and fat; ingredients are another story. “According to a study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, about 61.5 percent reported using the nutrition facts panel when deciding to purchase food. Fewer people paid attention to the list of ingredients” (CNN Health). The FDA is aware that labeling could help reverse the acceleration we are seeing in heart diseases and obesity, but labeling does not help people to read the ingredients if they do not understand pseudonyms, and vitamins. “The surveys also revealed frequent misunderstanding of the meaning of the daily/value column that shows how each nutrient fits into a healthy diet, “(American journal Nutrition, WEB). Many different harmful ingredients are secretly hidden in labels and people skimming ov...
Food is a universal need similar to writing. Writing is one of the best means of communication and without it we would not thrive as a society. As with food, everyone needs it to be able to flourish. Writing in any field is crucial for communication especially in nutrition because dietitians are dealing with people on a daily basis. Writing in various styles encompasses most of what dietitians do for a living. The minimum degree for employment is a Bachelor’s degree, however recipients of a Master’s degree tend to go further and enjoy greater success. A career in Nutrition can be very versatile, because of its broadness. The kinds of writing that are required continue to diversify. After conducting an open-ended survey of six Nutrition majors, which comprised of three undergraduate and graduate students, responses indicated that most of the answers varied from person to person. Although, there were some answers that correlated like graduate students being more focused on quantitative analysis and the interpretation of data, including reports and charting, undergraduate students writing style are more centered on research papers.
America is a capitalist society. It should come to a surprise when we live like this daily. We work for profit. We’ll buy either for pleasure or to sell later for profit. It should come to no surprise that our food is made the same way because we are what we eat. We are capitalist that eat a capitalist meal. So we must question our politics. Is our government system to blame for accepting and encouraging monopolies?
Do you think it’s safe to not know what is inside the food you eat? Many companies in the U.S. do not use food labels that does not protect the rights of people to know what is in their food today. All companies in the U.S. should have food labels to insure the safety of many people’s health. Even though we shouldn’t make it harder for food companies to sell their food to us by putting food labels on them, all foods should have food labels for the safety of humans because people with certain diseases need to know what's in food so they don't eat something that they will have an allergic reaction to and People deserve to know what is inside the food they eat everyday. People in the U.S. today barely know anything about what they eat.
