It is amazing what can be accomplished in just a few summers of hard work. Over the past four and a half years, I have volunteered at Reche Canyon Rehabilitation Center. Many lessons and morals have been taught while attending an establishment built for the health of others. During my time at Reche my days consisted of working with the activities staff; the activities staff entertained and comforted the residents in any way possible. Unfortunately, there were people in a more serious condition and I wasn’t able to aid them in a beneficial why. However, there was one task that allowed me to help those in a worse condition and it was designated was sensory. Sensory is getting an assortment of aromas and allowing the residents to smell them, to hopefully …show more content…
ensure their brains stay active; for the hope that one day they’re sickness or condition gets better Throughout my hours volunteering I noticed that some the residents seemed ungrateful, upset, and very demanding. It took me awhile but I figured out why and my immaturity at the time didn’t help. But the horrid truth is most of the residents don’t have much to live for and even doing a simple task doesn’t change the way they view their situation. At Reche Canyon the man I learned most from is Renderos, he was an older gentleman who’s suffering from heart and liver failure.
He would always thank me for the service, tasks that I would do, and he was the first resident to have an impact on my life. Every time I saw him he would tell my not to do drugs, alcohol or join a gang. My mother was very fond of him because of the life lessons and tips he would tell me that my mom had tried to drill into my head. He would always tell stories about his past and no matter how tired or bored I was; I gave him all my attention because I knew it made him happy. Before I met him I was a stereotypical teenager very quiet and shy, but he broke the ice and stated to interact with me. During my time with Mr. Renderos I taught myself how to interact with others, take care and respect them. The ability of interact and work with others is a necessary skill for life; school projects require a person to work with others in order to be a successful team and is later transferred into the working world were a person has to work with others on a daily basis. Yet after all that I have learned; I felt I had achieved something that I have never felt. And that was
purpose.
In the beginning of my senior year I was eager to expand my understanding of how it would be to work in a hospital. An opportunity arose allowing me to volunteer in the hospital at the University of Chicago. I was able to volunteer at the children's playroom, which consisted of a weekly commitment. The daily tasks I had to perform where to enlighten the spirits of children and reduce the amount of anxiety that developed within them when they approached a hospital visit. I would play games, read books, or just company the patients at their bedside. I especially love to interact with the younger patients because their laughter and innocence warms my heart up.
Many people rush through their daily life without contemplating their actions, thereby missing vast opportunities for achievement. They waste valuable time engaging in frivolous matters instead of putting their energies towards more productive and meaningful purposes. In the words of the Dalai Lama: “Life is not about acquiring money and other facilities; it is about dedicating your life to helping others as much as you can.” The immeasurable value of helping others has been engrained in me since childhood. As a result of my own difficult family circumstances, I have become more sensitive, kind and mindful towards others and their own situations. I have developed a passion for helping others, which, in combination with a proclivity towards medicine has lead to my descion to become a Physician Assistant. I want to live a life where I can provide healthcare and aid to anyone who needs.

People’s lives are changed every day by their actions and experiences. This past summer, I participated in a community service project, an experience that opened my eyes in many ways. I was a volunteer at the County Memorial Hospital. In my time as a volunteer at the hospital, I was able to meet patients and staff members from all over the world and learn about their life experiences. Listening to all of their stories has made me truly appreciate everything which I have.
I have always been a person that must help, it is difficult for me to sit idle and to do work that is meaningless. I left a safe and secure career in retail when I did not find the meaning the profound affect my work had upon another. A year and a half ago I began that journey to help others through starting my role as a therapeutic staff support. I was able to learn many things, and at the ...

I ambitiously decided that I would brighten the lives of the elderly by volunteering at a rest home, but discovered that the elderly were being neglected, shoved aside and forgotten. As I stepped into the home a pungent odor penetrated my nostrils, causing an instantaneous gagging reflex. The place was abounded with neglected and subdued inhabitants, yearning for attention. Anybody that passed them caused a sudden outburst of ranting. The negligence and disregard the home displayed appalled me, but helped me to realize that I wanted to make a difference and change the condition people live in.
Putting into words how I feel when I’ve made a difference in someone’s life is almost impossible. It’s something I feel deep inside and very passionate about. Working with geriatrics and terminal patients is where my passion lies. Maybe it’s because of my close relationship with my grandparents. I honestly don’t know. One thing I know…I’ve always loved the elderly. I was always the little girl wanting to visit and talk with them when my friends were off being typical children. Nearing the end of one’s life is a difficult and emotional time for everyone involved, and it’s my desire is to make this transition as smooth as possible. Applying to the social work program is the first step of my journey to achieving my ultimate goal…becoming a geriatric social worker.
I dreaded every hour, every minute I would have to spend wasting my free time doing this so-called “good deed.” I hated knowing I would be stuck doing busywork for one of the approved agencies. Only one appealed to my interests: the local Community The...

As a restorative aide, I lead a group of twenty-five to thirty clients through therapeutic activities that work on their gross motor, cognitive, fine motor, sensory, social, and behavior skills. I also carry out individual therapy sessions assigned by occupational therapists, and document individual progress notes. I work as an internal case manager for the clients, and I assist with the evaluation of each client according to his or her backgrounds, activity interests, abilities, and physical limitations to help develop a meaningful therapeutic activity for each person. This job has allowed me to use my creativity and design new fun activities every session to keep clients motivated. I work with clients who have traumatic brain injuries, dementia, and other cognitive and physical disabilities. I’ve developed interpersonal skills and learned the importance of reassurance, redirection, and patience with clients who may become easily confused and anxious. This job has allowed me to build trusting relationships with clients, and further confirmed my passion to become an occupational

The two neighborhoods that I chose to use for this assignment are vastly different. The main reason is because they are on opposite sides of the country. The first neighborhood that I visited is the one that I grew up in. This neighborhood is in Connecticut, on the East Coast, all the way across the country from the neighborhood that I currently live in here in West Hollywood. Most of my family lives in Connecticut and Massachusetts and I’m the only one who lives on the West Coast. A big difference is that the neighborhood in Connecticut has houses that are more spaced out, have larger lawns, and very many more trees. There are very few apartments there, unlike where I live now where my entire street is almost all apartment buildings.
