The True Definition of Modesty I come from what many would consider to be a very conservative background. In fact, from an early age, modesty was a central theme and pillar of my upbringing. This value has not left me; to this day, I still believe that modesty is vitally important. Some believe the definition of modesty only refers to dressing in a conservative manner but I believe it is much more than that. Should we really only define modesty in a single sense? I don’t believe so. In fact, I believe that someone who demonstrates modesty could be defined as a person who strives to not only dress appropriately, but also someone who handles money with discretion and communicates with others in a fitting and well-mannered way. Many primarily …show more content…
Modesty is powerful in that it is inherently discrete. I personally feel it is all too common within our society to see people flaunting their money. In fact, within pop-culture, the scene of money raining down and exorbitant spending has become the norm. In music videos and television shows the entire theme is often centralized around showing the world how much money one spent or can spend on material possessions. Everyone from rappers to popular television evangelists seem to have lost the ability to show any prudence. The notion of discretion has gone by the wayside. With that said, modesty can and should be defined by the way one spends and even speaks about their money. Having a large sum of money or material possessions does not mean that one automatically becomes immodest. It is the way someone handles their possessions that determines whether or not they are operating in a modest manner. If someone is modest with their finances they will be very careful not to reveal too quickly to those around them what they spend or do with their money. I have found that some of the most generous people are the most modest. One of the most impressive things one will see is when someone gives generously but asks that it remains anonymous. We recently had a cake auction in order to raise funds at my local church assembly. One bidder spent nearly 300 dollars on a cake but gave the bid money through a child just so no one would see them give it. This is a great example of being modest with finances. This type of modesty is so impressive because it totally goes against the grain of what you normally see. This is a true exemplification of the definition of
There was huge controversy about the style and how it affects how women dress today. Views on the modest vs. flapper style are very different. In Cleve’s article, it explains how the Flappers focus their style around dating and being attractive, whereas the modest women would wear very conservative clothes or what the men wanted. The Flapper was seen as hurting a woman’s reputation to be dressed in that way, but it was also seen as a stand for women’s rights to achieve self-fulfillment. During the modest era, women had little to no rights and did whatever the man told her and would run the house.
Do you expect a five-year old boy to be distracted by what a five-year old girl is wearing? Of course not. If you were to ask a child or teen what they thought about school, they would probably say that they dislike school for a multitude of reasons, two of them being: a misogynistic dress code and the stress of balancing schoolwork with the expectations of society. The American educational system is inadequate compared to countries like Finland in which the dress code is nonexistent and the curriculum is more flexible to human needs; it is imperative that we come together to assure Dr. Anna Hinton, director of innovation and improvement, that she can enhance the broken educational system.
What is the role of shame in the lives of these soldiers? Does it drive them to acts of heroism or stupidity? Or both? What is the relationship between shame and courage, according to O’Brien?
Sexual violence is sometimes thought of as a natural part of life. That men have an inherit biological trait that predisposes them to violence and that it cannot be helped. The famous quote is “boys will be boys” meaning that men have no control over their actions and that if they sexual assault someone, that it is just human nature. This is in fact false. There is nothing in the biological makeup of males that can explain away sexual violence. It is a learned cultural behavior generated by gender norms and the medias perpetuation of sexual violence.
For an attempt to purify a religious community of sin, the Puritans in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, have numerous faults due to their blindness of their own hypocrisy. Starting at the beginning of the text, women begin gossiping about Hester. The women talk about how Hester will cover her letter, how they wouldn’t take mercy on her as the magistrates have and how Reverend Dimmesdale,”her godly pastor, takes it very grievously to heart that such a scandal should have come upon his congregation” (Hawthorne 53). So because they also enjoy elaborate things, the children and virgin women do very un-Puritan like things, and how Dimmesdale himself is a hypocrite all show hypocrisy within the Puritan Society; however, children learn by how their parents act and what they do, so the Puritans within the text are following their

Many communities throughout the United States, contain large populations of religiously observant Jews. The intent of this research is to provide a comprehensive, descriptive guide to specific laws, customs, and practices of traditional, religious observant Jews for the culturally sensitive management of labor, delivery, and postpartum. Discussion includes intimacy issues between husband and wife, modesty issues, labor and birth customs and Sabbath observance, . Doctors and other health care professionals can tailor their practice by integrating their knowledge, and becoming culturally competent in regards to the Jewish culture to help facilitate a specific plan of care. In society today when the word intimacy is interchanged in a sentence,
The balance between vanity and honesty is not unreachable. Yet, it’s an issue that needs to be addressed. You have to be confident in yourself and your decisions but not so overly confident that you lose sight of who you really are. The same applies with honesty. You have to be honest for anyone to trust you with anything, whether it’s a job, a person, or even in a relationship. However, you can’t get so caught up in being honest that you condemn yourself or others for something that could be avoided.
In “The Essential Agrarian Reader,” Norman Wirzba claims that “it is only as we are faithful to the particularities and demands of place and accept responsibility for our actions in those places, that we can claim to be moral beings at all” ( Wirzba 95). Without recognizing the effects of our actions on a certain place we cannot consider ourselves moral individuals. In this paper, I will argue that this claim is correct because without a sense of accountability, a connection to morality cannot be made.
Women have been facing crisis of body image since the dawn of man, for competition in breeding purposes, however women came under great scrutiny because of this. Often through history, they have been at the same level of livestock, treated poorly. Creating a rise in the early 1900’s to create the movement about pushing for the equality of women in the United States; it was after then when media first started adopting an ideal image of women in American culture, when marketing research found the use of images of ideal women in their campaigns made for higher sales.
In a society where equality is constantly fought over, there are bound to be disputes. Feminism, the movement to create empowerment and equal rights for women, has been criticized by those who argue who, what, and how feminism should be fought with. Many conservative feminists believe that succumbing to men’s pleasure is never the answer, whereas “lipstick” feminists believe that they should be able to use all of their essence in order to establish equality. However, society needs both women and men equally. Feminism shouldn’t focus on how women reach that equality, but rather to reach that point of equality in the first place; with anything they got.
In the late 16th century England experienced poverty, starvation, increase in population, inequality amongst women and men, and lack of opportunity in the work force. During this time England was torn between two religions, Catholicism and Protestantism. England’s economy was primarily agricultural, workers were tied to their land. Due to the social inequality of the 16th century, women were limited to their rights and men were superior. Women worked in the clothing industry and men worked primarily on the farm. Due to the economic hardships in England, men and women migrated to London for a better life. The nation was under the rule of Queen Elizabeth, who surpassed the restrictions placed on women. This paper explores the shortcomings and hardships experienced in Elizabethan England.
That person isn’t modest. That woman isn’t modest. Her clothing isn’t modest. Modesty is generally expected of women. The earth is a masculinist world where men are seen as superior, paid more, and are more socially accepted to act inappropriately. It’s not likely for someone to expect a man to be modest. Many characteristics, such as modesty, are used in sexist ways. “In other words, society, not biology, confines males and females to particular masculine and feminine character profiles,” Aydon Edwards briefly mentioned. The word modest is just, unfortunately, related more to female characteristics. In a biased way the internet defines modest as, “free from ostentation or showy extravagance”. Instead of using modesty as an insult towards women who fail to meet the standards of dressing for a closed-minded society, it should be used to describes one’s behavior.
The relationship between sex and gender can be argued in many different lights. All of which complicated lights. Each individual beholds a sexual identity and a gender identity, with the argument of perceiving these identities however way they wish to perceive them. However, the impact of gender on our identities and on our bodies and how they play out is often taken for granted in various ways. Gender issues continue to be a hugely important topic within contemporary modern society. I intend to help the reader understand that femininities and masculinities is a social constructed concept and whether the binary categories of “male” and “female” are adequate concepts for understanding and organising contemporary social life with discussing the experiences of individuals and groups who have resisted these labels and forged new identities.
