The True Definition of Modesty I come from what many would consider to be a very conservative background. In fact, from an early age, modesty was a central theme and pillar of my upbringing. This value has not left me; to this day, I still believe that modesty is vitally important. Some believe the definition of modesty only refers to dressing in a conservative manner but I believe it is much more than that. Should we really only define modesty in a single sense? I don’t believe so. In fact, I believe that someone who demonstrates modesty could be defined as a person who strives to not only dress appropriately, but also someone who handles money with discretion and communicates with others in a fitting and well-mannered way. Modesty is powerful in that it is inherently discrete. I personally feel it is all too common within our society to see people flaunting their money. In fact, within pop-culture, the scene of money raining down and exorbitant spending has become the norm. In music videos and television shows the entire theme is often centralized around showing the world how much money one spent or can spend on material possessions. Everyone from rappers to popular television evangelists seem to have lost the ability to show any prudence. The notion of discretion has gone by the wayside. With that said, modesty can and should be defined by the way one spends and even speaks about their money. Having a large sum of money or material possessions does not mean that one automatically becomes immodest. It is the way someone handles their possessions that determines whether or not they are operating in a modest manner. If someone is modest with their finances they will be very careful not to reveal too quickly to those around them what they spend or do with their money. I have found that some of the most generous people are the most modest. One of the most impressive things one will see is when someone gives generously but asks that it remains anonymous. We recently had a cake auction in order to raise funds at my local church assembly. One bidder spent nearly 300 dollars on a cake but gave the bid money through a child just so no one would see them give it. This is a great example of being modest with finances. This type of modesty is so impressive because it totally goes against the grain of what you normally see. This is a true exemplification of the definition of
