The 21st century has seen us evolve further and create more, we’ve seen new inventions be created, and old inventions be updated. Our lives have changed dramatically in the last 20 years and we continue to evolve and become more technologically advanced. Today majority of Australia’s population have smartphones in their pockets, majority of us have connection to the internet 24/7, and we have a house to call home, a comfortable bed to sleep on, a car to drive or public transport available for us to use and appliances to cook with. We have electricity, its everywhere, it’s all around us, it powers the lights in your home, the power operating your phone, in the television you watch and the alarm you snooze each morning, all of which most of us take for granted. Many of us expect to have all of this daily whilst back in the 1500’s nothing like this existed, as far as they knew it was all impossible. So let’s think about this, what was life like form the 1500-1800 compared to now, dating back 5 centuries let us see what daily life is like comparing it to today.
As Blainey (p.410) mentions, “their daily life was ruled by the sun and the rain”, if the weather didn’t permit, little to no work was done that day, life was difficult and life was all about manual labour to get the jobs done. They did not fuss over the little things, like what they looked like that day, they did what they had to do to survive. Sometimes they would earn their meals as a form of payment but mostly they had to scavenge for it themselves. “Salt was the one common food to be carried long distances’ Blainey (p.414) tells us, he clarifies “to own a salt mine in Europe, was to won a goldmine”. In some respect yes, we do have laws in place for safe and fair work, we do live in a more industry-run word, where food and clothing aren’t always manual tasks. But we still get up in the morning, go work for, earn a reward and come home to take care of our family, so daily life is pretty similar, its just become much more modernised. Fortunately for us we live in a 1st world country, there are 3rd world countries that are still suffering poverty, homelessness and starvation, which have become a way of life. Most countries have evolved with modernisation and evolution but there are countries living by the old way of life, the tough way. We need to help them, as they are too poor to help themselves, we need to make this world equal, end poverty, end world hunger and contribute to making life for those who have it tough, easier.
