This relationship is referred to as The Leader-Member Exchange Theory (LMX). This theory discusses how close followers feel to their leader (Yulk 154). This basic concept behind this theory is that humans want to feel special, needed, and valued. By sharing geographical similarities and offering stability and hope, all three leaders start the affiliation, but due to a smaller number of followers Jim Jones is the best example of LMX. It is important to note that an actual relationship between the follower and the leader is not necessary, as long as the follower perceives there to be a relationship, Jones was able to create the allusion of being close to every follower, by preaching every Sunday. He would call random people from the congregation and say that god had told him to heal them. This produced the idea that he was speaking on all of their behalves to god, which when coupled with his continual preaching on acceptance, an aura of care was built around him. It also helped that he intermingled with his followers, shaking hands and listening stories, which helped form what seemed to be bonds. Instead of following anyone, assess why this person is leading and why people are following them. There will never be one solution when dealing with bad leaders, but if followers take action progress will be made. This action does not have to be extravagant. Sometimes simple questions can make things clearer. A quote from Hitler reads “Make the lie big, make it simple, keep saying it, and eventually they will believe it”. If only followers would have questioned why Jews were being singled out, or why moving to a cut off location would benefit the spreading of equality, or why persecuting a whole class for their wealth while trying to become part of that status, then these bad leaders would not have had such success in accomplishing their goals. In the case of Jim Jones his power lead to an enflamed ego, which led to a greed, not only of loyalty but of money. Money then lead to drug use, and in the end, drug use led to insanity. Those who are gifted with the ability to influence others have a huge responsibility. They must recognize what they have as a gift and not abuse what God has given them. Jim Jones is a person who had this gift as well as good intentions, yet he could not balance and keep in perspective that what he was doing was to benefit the world, not to benefit himself.
When it comes to the topic of leadership, most of us will agree that we are curious as well as critical of our leaders, and their actions. Political and religious leaders are often under close scrutiny. As influential leaders they set the vision, tone and goals of any organization. Hence, a leader 's , behavior and leadership style are constantly scrutinized and if appropriate, their leadership traits ought to positively impact followers. According to Northouse (2012), “A leader affects and is affected by followers and both leader and followers are affected in turn by the situation that surrounds them”(p.5). Efficient leaders are remembered by their visions and actions.
The Leader-Member Exchange Theory, or LMX, is a two-way relationship between management/supervisors and their employees/subordinates. The theory assumes that leaders use different management styles, leadership styles, and behaviors with each individual subordinate or group of subordinates. The exchange between supervisors and subordinates will be inconsistent between each individual member of the group. A supervisor may be very kind and supportive to one employee/group and be very critical and unresponsive to another employee/group. Due to this type of interaction, the LMX theory suggests that leaders classify subordinates into two groups, the in-group members and the out-group members (Gibson, Ivancevich, Donnelly, & Konopaske, 2012, p. 334).

I feel you must be able to follow before you can lead, and sometimes followers have an advantage, because followers observe & pay more attention to their surroundings than leaders do and some leaders rely on their followers for most information. Most leaders don’t teach followers how to follow, they just follow. We all want to be leaders at some point in life for something, and no one wants to be a follower. From further reading the article I analyzed that leaders who can’t risk, can’t lead. We want to give praise and look up to the leaders all the all the time and look down on the followers, because most people think followers are weak individuals who only do what they are told and don’t support their leaders whole heartedly and don’t speak up when something is wrong or a problem or situation arises. In research, business, and life there is much focus and attention given to leaders and the importance and desire of leading with little thought given to followers or following. People hear phrases such as “don’t be a follower” and develop a negative image of what followers are or the role they fill (Kellerman, 2007; Kelley, 1988). Followers are necessary for leaders to lead, a fact that is often taken for granted. Both roles are required for an organization to function and individuals find themselves moving from role to role as the situation changes or allows.

The Leadership role has it’s exceptional demand on it’s own when it comes to big metropolis organization. The organization I work at it has chain facilities where leaders are not judged by the followers. The followership quotient definitely depends on the behavior of the leader, and most followers follow the footsteps of the leader. Perhaps the organization I work for has it’s own defaults when it comes to leadership. I often look at my manager as the leader of the team, and other times, I look at our scheduling leader and feel she the leader of the team. However my perspective changes based on the scenarios that get handled by each of them.
Leadership, as shown in the video, is very broad. Leadership is grouping people and influencing them to work together as one in order to achieve a common goal or vision. It can either be the promoter of world peace, a powerful innovation, or even the initiator of war. Leadership, in both ways, requires someone to do what one loves to do because leaders excel in their own ways and in their own fields of interest. Every day we meet leaders, some from religious organizations, some are from political parties, school organizations, professional organizations, and others are from rebellious organizations.
