Recommended: Analysis of John Anderton's character

In the short-story, John A. Anderton was the creator of a system called Precrime where an entire police force is dedicated to interpreting these visions shown by the 3 precogs and catching the future criminals before they commit these foreseen crimes. John Anderton is a an old, balding, and out of shape police officer who has a healthy relationship with his married wife with no children for many years and has a strong pride in his work.

He did not create Pre-Crime. is chief of Washington DC Precrime, a department of the police that uses Precogs to prevent homicides before they happen. Anderton’s pride in Pre Crime came from a previous experience he had with the kidnapping of his only child and he takes drugs to suppress his depression.

The precogs are named Mike, Donna, and Jerry. Humans who were born with the ability to see into the future but became deformed and mentally impaired.The Precogs can see all types of crime, who each independently predict a person's culpability and that, due to the vagaries of predicting futures, are not always in total agreement. There frequently exists a slightly different version of events termed a "minority report", although typically this still points to a person's guilt with only a few details altered. They are named Agatha, Dashiell and Arthur. They are the children of drug addicts, leading to them having visions and that they work as a "hive mind" that requires the female Precog Agatha to function.     The main theme of A Prayer for Owen Meany is religious faith -- specifically, the relationship between faith and doubt in a world in which there is no obvious evidence for the existence of God.  John writes on the first page of the book that Owen Meany is the reason that he is a Christian, and ensuing story is presented as an explanation of the reason why.  Though the plot of the novel is quite complicated, the explanation for Owen's effect on Johnny's faith is extremely simple; Owen's life is a miracle -- he has supernatural visions and dreams, he believes that he acts as God's instrument, and he has divine foresight of his own death -- and offers miraculous and almost undeniable evidence of God's existence.  The basic thematic shape of the novel is that of a tension being lifted, rather than a tension being resolved; Johnny struggles throughout the book to resolve his religious faith with his skepticism and doubt, but at the novel's end he is not required to make a choice between the two extremes: Owen's miraculous death obviates the need to make a choice, because it offers evidence that banishes doubt.  Yet Johnny remains troubled, because Owen's sacrificial death (he dies to save the lives of a group of Vietnamese children) seems painfully unfair.  Johnny is left with the problem of accepting God's will.  In the end, he invests more faith in Owen himself than he invests in God -- he receives two visitations from Owen beyond the grave -- and he concludes the novel by making Owen something of a Prince of Peace, asking God to allow Owen's resurrection and return to Earth.

    It was extremely heavy and sometimes obvious with the amount of foreshadowing. It starts on the first lines of the story. “Penistone Road, Clapham, 20th August, 19-” (Harvey 385). The year being missing gives a clue to a major point later in the story. With good analytical skills, the reader can (correctly) assume that the end of the story will be the narrator writing about himself writing the story. The narrator most likely did not include the year because he wanted the reader to figure out that it was not supposed to be a year, but another date. The way the story is told is like a diary entry. The missing date at the end helps the reader determine the end for himself. In the end it is suggested that the character dies. However if the character does die, he does it after the story ends. This piece of foreshadowing shows that the narrator most likely dies. The story was finished being wrote close to midnight. If the character did in fact live, he would have made it to the next day and the date for the next day would have been written. Since the date is not there, the reader can assume that the character died, which fills in the missing pieces that the narrator leaves the reader to figure out. Although on the surface, American Psycho seems as though it is just another horror story, it actually has a much deeper message. This story is a harsh critique of a superficial Wall Street society in the late 80s that was rampant with materialism and greed. This is the society in which the main character Patrick Bateman lives–where appearance, material possessions, and status define a person. This superficial existence leaves him hollow and dead inside and turns him into a psychopathic killer. A society such as this, devoid of any morality, inevitably creates psychopaths such as Bateman. The film shows an excellent portrayal of a vacant, nihilistic killer with no feelings or emotions. However, there is something more to the story that the film did not quite capture. The book seems to not only be a satirical take on this society, but a tragedy as well. Recreating the dinner scene with his secretary Jean shows that underneath the surface Patrick Bateman is, indeed, a human being with real feelings and emotions, and that it is a great tragedy that this superficial society has turned him into a monster.
