My SCE centers around the study of sleep disorders – how to diagnose them, treat them, and how they impact the daily lives of the people afflicted with them. Although sleeping may not be the first thing to surface in someone's mind when people mention the medical field, it is still an important aspect of life, and especially for teenagers in high school, it is something many people underappreciate and lack. When I was younger, I had always been interested in helping people in some way and that is what shaped my interests and spurred me into the field of medicine. Once I arrived at GSMST, my courses played a strong role in strengthening that commitment to medicine – first in freshman chemistry and then in AP biology and AP Chemistry. Those classes …show more content…
The point of internships were to either immerse yourself in your chosen field to learn more about it or try a field you hadn't considered before to see if it would turn out to be great for you. Since I had been so set on the medical field since a young age, I decided I wanted to try a technology-oriented internship at NCR, just to see how it felt. While the experience wasn't boring or useless by any means, it only strengthened my resolve to go into the medical field; for me, technology and engineering just didn't stick in my head as easily as medicine did. So, as I searched for my SCE this year, I concentrated solely in the medical field and eventually came upon the Gwinnett Medical Sleep Center Clinic. I had never considered sleep before, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized how perfect of a fit this was for me. For one thing, being a teenager in high school means I'm constantly exposed to the effects of sleep deprivation. More importantly, my mom always complained about sleeping issues, and it was in my interest to find out exactly how sleep deprivation affected her and how to fix lesson the …show more content…
Knowledge is the easiest CARP to master. It requires no change of personality or thought, just simple studying and research. Coming from a school like GSMST with challenging courses and talented teachers, I feel like knowledge is my strongest CARP. Of course, I am by no means an expert in the field of sleep or medicine, but I have a strong foundation. From chemistry, I learned proper lab work and important chemical reactions. From biology, I learned the basic workings of the human body. From language arts, I learned how to research what I don’t know and how to study and understand differing views and apply those as I work. These will greatly help me in my internship. I have a foundation to launch from when learning new things about sleep and medicine so I won’t be completely lost starting off and I will know how to study and learn so that I can retain information I gain and find out more on my own. Another CARP strength I have is how inquisitive I can be. I am not afraid to show that I don’t know everything and to use the people around me to gain more knowledge. I know that new knowledge won’t be handed to me on a silver platter and in order to learn more, I must investigate whenever I can. When I was younger, I was too shy to do so, but as I grew older, I saw that the people who asked questions were able to learn things more easily because they
Learner is by far one of the best strengths you can have. I am glad because it showed up as being my number one strength. In today’s society you will get no were without learning because
“Bless me, Ultima” “Bless me”. A phrase mostly used in a religious establishment when one is asking a priest or religious leader for a blessing, prayer, or guidance during the time of struggle. This relates back to the title Bless Me, Ultima as this statement is in a tone of voice from the narrator, Antonio, who is seen as the person that establishes a good amount of trust in Ultima herself; so much so, that he takes her religious and life guidance. This need is reflected throughout the book, literally and symbolically. Tony continues his work and learning from his mentor Ultima about not only just his relationship with God, but also the connection between reality and nature.
Health is a complex concept, and when we talk about health we refer to body health and to the health of the mind, the health of relationships between us and those around us, the spiritual health. Looking online on one of the additional resources recommended, www.nimh.nih.gov, I have noticed that one of the symptoms of most diseases that affect a person's mental health is lack of sleep. Lack of sleep not only worsens man's mental health, but also causes serious imbalances in metabolism, immunity, general mood, and last but not least, affects the ability of learning and memorizing among students. The sleep fulfills a number of vital functions for both our mind and body. We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, which is a valuable and useful
Sleep deprivation is a severe problem that can cause a variety of negative effects in everyday lives. Sleep is required for our survival and relied on for our mental and physical wellbeing. Because there is a greater awareness of the problems associated with sleep deprivation, our society is very fortunate to have the resources to seek the help that is needed.
...ers lie restlessly in their beds while men and women come from work to get that treasured hour or two of sleep only to wake up and head off to their second or third job. Looking at all the information it becomes fairly obvious how much could be affecting peoples sleeping patterns. Sleep deprivation is something that affects everyone at some point in their life whether their a student, a teacher, a doctor, or a janitor and everyone has their reasons for staying up whether their good reasons like studying or work or not really solid reasons like staying up all night watching TV, or playing games. Either way sleep deprivation is something that can cause a major issue to everyone and is something that needs to be controlled in order to keep order and harmony in people’s lives. Without those things everything that society has built up could easily collapse in on itself.
Studies conducted over a nearly 30 year span have consistently shown only a small fraction of adolescents get the 9 or more hours of sleep they require to function at their best. While teenagers are notorious for causing their own sleep difficulties, sleep loss among adolescents is confined primarily to school nights. “Sleep deprivation is epidemic among adolescents, with potentially serious impacts on mental and physical health, safety, and learning. Most teenagers undergo a biological shift to a later sleep-wake cycle, which can make early school start times particularly challenging.” says
Sleep is one of the unavoidable daily-living activities and it is one of the most important factors contributing to a person’s health. A quality sleep is essential for the physical, cognitive and psychological well-being of a person. Learning, memory processing and maintenance of the brain are among the most important functions of sleep. In addition to maintaining the brain, sleep has important roles in controlling the functions of many other body systems. Sleep-related issues are common in today’s society, especially in high school and college students’ populations. “In recent surveys, nearly 75% of university students reported occasional sleep problems such as difficulty in falling asleep, sleep disturbances, delayed sleep phase syndrome and excessive daytime sleepiness” (Altun, Insaf, et al.). These sleep
One strength I saw myself, as having when I enter college is being able to understand and critical think about a essay/article that I have read. However, after taking English 101, I have now learned that this is a strength of mine as well as a weakness.
People often overlook the importance of sleep, when sleep is actually necessary to survive. “Poor sleep can contribute to weight gain, headaches, high blood pressure, diabetes, depression, an impaired immune system, and attention deficit disorder” (Lai, Wei-Shin). Over the past century Americans are consistently getting less sleep than needed due to multiple different factors. I can personally relate to not getting a good night’s sleep and facing the consequences of sleep deprivation. Overall, sleep is more important than we think when it comes to a healthy lifestyle.
College students are no exception to the rule and are often at a greater risk of suffering from conditions that accompany sleep deprivation. Regardless of the time period, a college student must be well rested in order to perform at his or her best in terms of physical performance, memorization capabilities, and test-taking abilities. Also, without adequate sleep, the person will be more susceptible to illnesses, both mental and physical. In conclusion, I believe that sleep deprivation among college students is extremely common and has a direct effect on how well that student performs or feels.

Preliminary Thesis Statement: Sleep deprivation has detrimental effects on the health and academic performance of students.
During the course of time, I’ve learned many useful things that have led me to be the person I want to be today. From college classes to work experiences, I now have the ability to exceed upon internship experiences that can shape my perspective on life. The purpose of this paper is to summarize, reflect, analyze, and synthesize on my internship experience at the Children’s Home of Reading-Acute Partial Hospitalization Program.
My internship experience this semester was interesting. I interned at ESH/MESH with Bridgeway. My Supervisor was Emilie Banz. I didn’t do much but I did learn a lot from this experience. I met a lot of great people and watch PsyR in action. I met a couple of individuals who were really cool. My experience this semester has prepared me for the next.
Indeed, I admit that my experience in my clinical internship is much different in my industrial setting. I experienced the world of unemployed and employed people. I experienced to look for a job, pass resume, being interviewed and waiting for a call from a company. I admit that it’s really hard and tiring to look for a job. After all the struggles, I received a call from the company where I want to get in and spend my internship. I got accepted to work and do my internship at Philippine Airlines, for me I take this as an opportunity since I really want to work in airlines. I worked at Philippine Airlines for almost a month. I was assigned in Human Capital specifically Compensation Division. At first, I find difficulty in adjusting to this
