Palestinian Islamic Jihad
Israel is being attacked! The people of Palestine and Israel, may have heard about, witnessed, or even been a part of those attacks, but few know who the real culprits are and what they’re about. Rockets falling from the sky, suicide bombings, and violence seem to happen daily in the region. While they know it is the responsibility of a deadly group, they may not know their faces. They may not know that they walk the streets with them and plan their next means of destruction not too far away.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad or PIJ is one of the most well known military or terrorist organizations involved in the Arab Israeli conflict. This organization is a constant threat to Israel and the international community. Their radical leaders and allies have taken control over communities and seek to completely destroy Israel through their movement. The Arabic term jihad means to “struggle”, “strive”, to “fight”.4 10 In the western world, it is often referred to as a “holy war” which was started by Muslims and intended to defend and spread their religious beliefs.9

Around 1979, some of the radical Palestinian students that were members of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, were upset with the brotherhood because of its lack of action on the Arab Israeli conflict. They felt the brotherhood was too moderate in the fight against Israel.8 An Islamic Fundamentalist named Fathi Shaqaqi, left the brotherhood and with the help of fellow students, started the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The victims will continue to live in fear and hatred for those that want to destroy them and their land.
While my research has really opened my eyes to this international dilemma, I am torn by the problem so rich in history and faith. I am not an advocate of taking anyone’s life no matter what happened in the past or now, however, I do not see a resolution in sight. My hope is that this group does not filtrate to other international areas, in particular the U.S., as some terrorist groups have done more recently. We may not have the same beliefs when it comes to religion or politics, but we do unite in times of crisis. I believe the United States is not a force the Palestinian Islamic Jihads would want to go up against.
