Intra- and interpersonal perceptions have significant influence on an individual’s success at both university and work. Interpersonal perceptions achieve this through allowing the individual to work effectively within a team environment, mainly inside the work place, but also to a lesser extent at university. Within the team environment, interpersonal perceptions increase the effectiveness of communication whilst also contributing to a greater level of compassion and empathy within the group. Intra-personal perceptions contribute to individual success by raising self-awareness and monitoring of study/work habits and knowledge. With these tools enabled academic success and workplace competency are achievable.
Individual success at work is a subjective concept. For some it is defined by the rank that they attain within the company, for others it is defined by the lifestyle that their occupation has allowed them to lead. No matter what the personal definition of success at work is, its achievement is largely influenced by the individual’s interpersonal and intra-personal perceptions. Interpersonal perceptions, that is being able to understand others, and their actions, has high significance when working in the diverse team environments of a workplace. While, interpersonal perceptions may not directly contribute to success at work, it contributes heavily towards the individual’s ability to work in teams, which if done successfully, will directly contribute to individual success at work (Poon 2004). Whilst the measurement of success at work and university is a subjective concept, the way in which it is achieved is largely not. The manner in which interpersonal and intra-personal perceptions influence individual success is evident. Interpersonal perceptions allow for a smooth integration into the team environment of a workplace as well as the establishment of friendship support networks at university. Whilst intra-personal perceptions enable the individual to accurately gauge their own thoughts, abilities and knowledge in the workplace and at university.

Gene, the novel’s protagonist feels as though his best friend Phineas is somehow out to get him. However, Finny’s perception of his friend was utterly different from Gene’s perspective. In fact, Finny acts as a foil for Gene throughout the story, carrying a completely different outlook on things. Gene’s savage nature allows him to identify the evil within people when Finny simply acknowledges the positive traits in his friends, disregarding the concept of wickedness as a whole. Through Gene and Finny’s friendship, John Knowles illustrates the significance of how one has the ability to perceive others.
The need for achievement regards an individual’s relationship with setting challenging goals, creating competitive scenarios, and overcoming difficulties. Setting goals and creating healthy competition between employees can bring the performance level back to normal, and even better yet surpass the usual level. The need for power regards an individual’s need to positively influence coworkers and improve their wellbeing by making a difference in their life. Having an impact on the lives of others has the potential to influence employee turnover rates and attendance. If an individual feels that they have power over another employee they will be more inclined to show up to work everyday and to stay at their current job for longer than they may have originally anticipated. The need for affiliation concerns the relationships that an individual needs to maintain positive, close, or intimate feelings with others. Positive, close relationships in the workplace make individuals feel as if they are truly a part of the organization and increase satisfaction levels amongst workers. These close relationships will help employees to fell that their work is appreciated within the organization and that there certainly are people who care how they perform at their jobs. Social psychology is a scientific study that studies how people think, feel, and how they behave under the influence of other people (Aronson, Wilson & Akert, 2013, p. 2). Thinking about what social influence really means, we tend to think of a person who tries to persuade another person to acting a certain way. It can be a form of peer pressure, like taking that first puff of a cigarette, or it can be conforming to popular societal views, such as obeying the law of the land. Fiction is a great way to learn about social psychological perspectives. Watching popular theatrical films is the perfect way to learn because it illustrates the application of many perceptions within the subject of social psychology.
Thinking about normal social interactions and normal social behaviors, I think of comfortable. When I sit down with a friend, a usual routine is followed, “Hey, how are you, what’s new?” (e.g. My turn, your turn). These questions between my friend and I include eye contact, attention, and facial expression. Usually, I feel that I give my friend my undivided attention. Other normal characteristics include: remembering what the person has just said so a comment can be made, as well as each comment is appropriate and in relation to the current topic. Moreover, the duration between each question or comment is short.
It is very clear to me that we live in a very dynamic world that changes constantly. The rate at which we communicate what is essential at the moment seems to progress and speed up as technology gets a progressive upgrade. In reality we are what we are thanks to technology, and because of this technology communication seems to evolve with our own evolution as human beings. I start of with technology because by reading the chapter I really fell in love with what the true concept of interpersonal communication is and how its versatility is adjustable to the modern day. It is funny how we involuntarily participate on a daily basis in this interpersonal interactions with one another and make it extremely effective again to the point that it is subconsciously done. There several aspects of my life that evolve this natural human instinct and I feel it relates the most to technology.
A lack of communication in any area of your relationship can cause you to miss out on what you want. For instance, in an intimate relationship, not communicating about what you need in the bedroom will result in a lack of pleasure and satisfaction. The interpersonal conflict revolves around my mother and I. We have always had a strong relationship but lately, have been at constant odds between each other. There is conflict between us because of our conflicting views on whats the better option for our beloved dog. My mother will always hold the power most of the times by default, she is my mother after all, but when it comes to this specific interpersonal conflict, I certainly hold the power. Other family members know of this dilemma as well including my grandmother who is just as conflicted as my mother and I are. My grandmother has a strong attachment to our dog and would effect her emotionally.

The aim of this assignment is to enlighten one on different aspects that can influence a person’s perception and the effects it comes with in the working environment. We live in a world where stereotyping and being prejudice reigns supreme, where individuals conclude their own perceptions of another the very first time they meet each other. I was taught a saying throughout high school that has stayed with me till today, the saying “first impressions last forever”. Throughout this assignment one should not only learn about the aspects of social perception but also gain a life lesson that we live in a very judgemental society, therefore don’t change for someone else’s acceptance. However, the individual interests must be taken into consideration while working towards the team’s common goal. However, ignoring individual members’ interest can be detrimental. Perception of one’s self begins early in life. For me, it began as being a little sister. My older sister was six when I was born and due to that age difference, was also a kind of parent to me. I knew I was to be the compliant, cute little sister and spent my younger years trying to live up to the little sister standard. While the definition of success may differ for university students and employees at an organisation, the basic principles and skills required are very similar. Individuals require both intrapersonal and interpersonal perception in order to achieve success, whether at university or work. Skills such as self-regulation, self-monitoring, implementing goals and strategies to achieve those goals, as well as harnessing good communication skills and formal relationships are key factors to success. It is with these perceptions that individuals can gain skills that can help overcome barriers to succeed.
