TOPIC: THE SUFFERING OF THE INDENTURED LABORERS AND THEIR
LIFESTYLE
THEME: PACIFIC SOCIETIES UNDER CAPITALISM
The project is based on the Indenture System during the Colonial period in Fiji. The Indians were brought from India to work in the sugarcane plantation, as the introduction of the Indenture System was by Sir Arthur Gordon. In my project the topic reflects on the theme through, explaining about the suffering and living style of the Indians during the indenture system. My project also shows light on the harsh consequences on the work at the plantation. This topic gives fair idea and explanation on the Fijians and Indo Fijian societies in the indenture system as the theme “Pacific Societies under Capitalism”.
While doing my project a question arises that “How the topic is related to me?” I believe that it is related to me in many ways. Firstly, it makes or takes me back to look into the gaps left to be filled in my family tree and details that the young generation are not aware of in the family. This includes the information on my Great. Great Grandfather, in which did he come to Fiji, did he have a family back in India and what was the cause of coming to Fiji. Secondly, I will get a fair detail and idea about the indenture system and the suffering that my great great grandfather went through during indenture system. My topic is relevant to also inform of an answer to all those that aroused in mind which was never explained to the young generation, as how our surname changed from Lal to Prasad. I believe that in carrying out this I would find all missing puzzles in my family tree.
My project is relevant to my society as this explain the pain and hardship the Indians went through, in the indentur...

Furthermore, I referenced some information from the internet, firstly, http//www.GIRMIT UNITED.ORG, this website showed stories of the indenture system, which was told by the families of the indentured laborers. This helped me to a fair idea on the indenture system and how it contributed to make Indians stay back in Fiji. Secondly, a testimony given by Late Dr Ahmed Ali on http//www.GIRMIT UNITED.ORG/ The indenture experiences in Fiji, this article helped me understand why Indenture System was called the Black Side of Slavery. Thus these articles and sources made me get detailed and proper information on the Indenture system and how my topic related to it, this article provided timeline for all the events. My idea of getting information on my family was filled through these sources as evidences for my work.

In the book Bad Indians, Miranda talks about the many issues Indigenous People go through. Miranda talks about the struggles Indigenous people go through; however, she talks about them in the perspective of Native Americans. Many people learn about Indigenous People through classrooms and textbooks, in the perspective of White people. In Bad Indians, Miranda uses different literary devices to show her perspective of the way Indigenous People were treated, the issues that arose from missionization, as well as the violence that followed through such issues. Bad Indians is an excellent example that shows how different history is told in different perspectives.
The novel “Indian Horse” by Richard Wagamese demonstrates the many conflicts that indigenous people encounter on a daily basis. This includes things such as, the dangers they face and how they feel the need to flee to nature, where they feel the most safe. Another major issue they face is being stripped of their culture, and forcibly made to believe their culture is wrong and they are less of a human for being brought up that way, it makes them feel unworthy. Finally, when one is being criticised for a hobby they enjoy due to their indigenous upbringing, they make himself lose interest and stop the hobby as it makes them different and provokes torment. Texas Indians were very unique in their culture and way of life. Based on the text, “La Relacion” which was written by Alvar Nunez de Vaca, an analysis of said subject can be conducted.
The removal of Indian tribes was one of the tragic times in America’s history. Native Americans endured hard times when immigrants came to the New World. Their land was stolen, people were treated poorly, tricked, harassed, bullied, and much more. The mistreatment was caused mostly by the white settlers, who wanted the Indians land. The Indians removal was pushed to benefit the settlers, which in turn, caused the Indians to be treated as less than a person and pushed off of their lands. MOREEE

American Indian stories is the story of an Indian girl’s childhood experiences and how she went to school and also talks about the different Indian customs. The book sarts out with how her father, uncle and little sister were killed by the white men, and how much her mother resented the white men or palefaces as she called them. Bead work was one of the main things the Indian women did and so the little Indian girl also learned to do bead work by watching her mom. This book also tells of the many Indian myths or beliefs. In one case the little girl and many of the villagers were going to see a young warriors first arrival and their was a great party and during the walk to the center of the camp the little girl tried to grab a plum when her mother told her not to get a plum because the plum bush was growing out of the hands of an Indian boy who always like to play and eat plums. one day missionaries came to the camp to basically send mostly children to the East so they would learn the ways of the white man and also become civilized and in turn help bring more Indians Eastward to help with the modernization of America and Indians. The book describes in detail the regiment of what happened and how the little girl was feeling while she was in school and the day she went back home to visit her mother and also to recruit new children from the school she came from. Finally the little girl became a teacher. The book goes on to describing a warrior chief and his pride and joy in his little daughter and how he didn’t see anyone that would be able to marry his daughter. As Indians living in white culture, many problems and conflicts arise. Most Indians tend to suffer microaggressions, racism and most of all, danger to their culture. Their culture gets torn from them, and slowly, as if it was dream, many Indians become absorbed into white society, all the while trying to retain their Indian lifestyle. In Indian Father’s Plea by Robert Lake and Superman and Me by Sherman Alexie, the idea that a dominant culture can pose many threats to a minority culture is shown by Wind-Wolf and Alexie.
From Spain's early arrival in the Caribbean through their establishment of the Spanish empire indigenous people were exploited through cheap, slave like labor. One of the most incredible subjects raised by the documents presented in Colonial Spanish America is the topic of Labor Systems that were imposed on the indigenous people. Spain tried to excuse this exploitation by claiming to save these indigenous people by teaching them the ways of Christ but many of the Articles in Colonial Spanish America, Struggle & Survival, and The Limits of Racial Domination prove otherwise. Through letters, personal stories, and other documents these books present accounts that tell about the labor system used in this area. They tell of the Spanish labor systems such as the encomiendos and later rapartamientos and how these operations were run.
A turning point on the Indian fight for independence was the western press. Reporters witnessed a scene in which Indians tried to get into a factory row by row, and were brutally beaten by soldiers, row by row, as the women pulled the dead and injured away.
