When people see the homeless, they are quick to assume whether the homeless are where they’re at because of drugs, or not being in a stable environment. However, homeless people rarely receive an opportunity to tell their life stories or even have the chance to explain how they ended up in the situations they are in. Homelessness in Boston has persisted and increased for decades. Though there have been efforts to combating the issues of homelessness and housing, it appears that there is no solution in sight. Winter have become nightmares for most of the homeless population in Boston. Weather ranges from thirty degrees down to ten, sometimes single numbers. Homeless or not, we were all raised and taught not to do the things that would hurt people. The way homeless people are being treated in today’s world is out of hand and it needs to come to an end. The homeless are humiliated, assaulted, talked badly about, and overly stressed due to traumatic experiences. Living conditions are another condition that disables the homeless population in Boston. With the cost of living continually rising, Boston alone stands as the ninth most expensive housing market in the country. It does not take much to wind up homeless in any city. Homelessness is not a disease. It is not a virus, not a condition, nor bacteria. Homelessness is a state where a person does not have a permanent residential. This includes people who live in shelters, motels and on the streets. They do not have homes because of the rising prices of housing. In New York City alone, 61,931 people are homeless as of September 2016. This is an epidemic in New York, not because of the sheer number of homeless people, but because of the lack of support from the local government. Homeless people are ignored by citizens, attacked by youth and abused by police officers. The New York Police Department even instituted Move Along Policy where homeless people who are idle for too long are forced to move their locations. This could be sitting on a bench for too long or falling asleep in a train station. So displaced citizens are not only homeless, but they are not allowed to reside in familiar locations without fear of being harassed by policemen. The youth of New York City find entertainment in harming homeless people. They would attack them, throwing bottles at them, hitting them, in hopes of knocking them unconcious. This great nation of awesome power and abundant resources is losing the battle against homelessness. The casualties can be seen on the street corners of every city in American holding an ?I will work for food? sign. Homeless shelters and rescue missions are at full capacity. There is no room at the inn for the nation?s indigent. Anyone who has studied this issue understands that homelessness is a complex problem. Communities continue to struggle with this socio-economic problem while attempting to understand its causes and implement solutions. Homeless individuals are known for taking hand outs and they prefer to plead for money rather than to go work for it. People assume most of the the money that is given to homeless people they spend it on drugs and alcohol because of the fact that many homeless people have drug and alcohol addictions. It is not uncommon to come across homeless youth and older homeless population that are known to abuse substances like drugs and alcohol. Because of the fact that homeless people have substance abuse problems, they tend face illnesses and infections. Many hard working Americans ask themselves “why don’t homeless people just get jobs?” The assumption is they are just lazy and unmotivated. Homeless people choose to live the life they live. Everyone goes through problems but not all people take the path homeless people do. The problems homeless people face is not an excuse for them to be helped and maintained by other hard working people. Although homelessness might be a choice to some, no one knows the hardships these people have gone through. As technology advances and more countries join the developed world, we here in America have a forgotten population. Here in America, a land of great wealth and opportunity, we have a neglected homeless population. In a land so rich it is hard to believe that over half-a-million people are left homeless, leaving hundreds of thousands on the street. (National Alliance) New York City has been upsetting the national trend of a decreasing homeless population. (Facts about Homelessness) Many people find it easier to look the other way rather than take on such a monumental problem. Disregarding this problem will not make it go away, and will even exacerbate the problem. Homelessness did not happen overnight, nor will it go away overnight, but change is possible. There are over 100 million homeless people worldwide who are ordinary human beings. They often are stripped of their natural human rights and are segregated from their community. Many are looked upon as criminals that do not deserve to be treated properly. They often camp in public parks, and are brutally awakened in the middle of the night; “rousted out of bed, and told to move all of their possessions out of whatever space they are in within a given period of time, often an hour” (Anawim Christian Community). Homeless people are frequently denied human necessities, brutally treated, and despised and feared from the people around them.
Homelessness can be categorized into three groups; primary homelessness; those without adequate accommodation, secondary homelessness; also known as couch surfing, and tertiary homelessness; such as boarding housing and caravan parks. These categories range from the most severe to the least severe, with secondary homelessness being the most common form of homelessness for young people. Youth homelessness is a prevalent issue in today’s society, as there are 100, 000 people that are homeless in Australia on any given night, at least half of these people who are under the age of 25. Catholic Social Teaching sums up the key principles of the Catholic Church and issues of justice between different groups in society.
Many people do not think homelessness is a problem, but the homeless people, mostly unseen, exist in ever-increasing numbers. The homeless are like a bowl of popcorn; an uncooked kernel of popcorn goes unnoticed until you bite down on it. Just like the homeless are not thought about until they are seen, when you get to the bottom of the bowl of popcorn, there are a handful of uncooked kernels. Think about last January when the temperatures dipped into the teens; the eleven o'clock news mentioned that the shelters were filled beyond capacity. As much as we hate to, we must face this fact: thousands of homeless people exist.
Homelessness has been a problem for as long as I can remember. I remember seeing people on street corners when we would travel to larger cities and wondering why they looked so sad when they lived in such an amazing place. Growing up in a small town sheltered me in that sort of way, but it also helped me open my eyes to the growing problem as I got older. I could see the pain that came with extreme poverty, the cries of help in just one look, and the gratitude that came when another person did a small act of kindness. As I’ve gotten even older, homelessness has decreased. However, even though the problem is decreasing, it still exists. It exists through the absence of solid information and how we can begin working to solve the problem.
After waiting in line for seven hours with a bag that weighs almost as much as her, 62 year old Abigail is the second to last person to receive a room at the homeless shelter. Her legs quiver in pain as she walks up two flights of stairs to a room she will be sharing with eight other people for the night. Tonight, Abigail will be able to wash her clothing, sleep in a heated room, and shower for the first time in a while. She sleeps for as long as she can, despite questionable odor and loud noises, but Abigail must leave the shelter by five AM. The homeless are poor people, who have no home and literally live in the street. I am a person who loves to help others when they deserve it. Around 6000,000 people in the United States are homeless, and the majority of them have an effect on our community as well in our economy. A large amount of the homeless are Americans, of course, people who were born in the US and speak English, but they did not want to go to school and have a better future. They decide to do drugs, be prostitutes, live from the government’s money or from the money they ask in the streets, in other words the easy way. Homelessness is everywhere, it is not a new trend and is a growing problem. Many people ask themselves should I help the homeless or not; it is easier to just ignore the problem than to give a helping hand. Every person needs help at one point or another in their life and homeless people should be no different. Assisting the homeless with healthcare, housing, and childcare are ways people are able to and should help the homeless.
So that is the reason they are homeless, but there are other reasons: unaffordable housing, unemployment, personal disasters (ex. fire, hurricane, etc.), illness, domestic violence, family issues and loss of social services.
