Homelessness in America Many people debate on weather homeless people should receive guidance or just be abandoned. Do homeless people deserve our service and to be supported, or are they just lazy individuals trying to take advantage of people? Homelessness is a growing dispute in cities. Homeless individuals are known for taking hand outs and they prefer to plead for money rather than to go work for it. People assume most of the the money that is given to homeless people they spend it on drugs and alcohol because of the fact that many homeless people have drug and alcohol addictions. It is not uncommon to come across homeless youth and older homeless population that are known to abuse substances like drugs and alcohol. Because of the fact that homeless people have substance abuse problems, they tend face illnesses and infections. Many hard working Americans ask themselves “why don’t homeless people just get jobs?” The assumption is they are just lazy and unmotivated. Homeless people choose to live the life they live. Everyone goes through problems but not all people take the path homeless people do. The problems homeless people face is not an excuse for them to be helped and maintained by other hard working people. Although homelessness might be a choice to some, no one knows the hardships these people have gone through. Some assume these people are just lazy but in reality a lot of these homeless people have jobs of their own, they just can’t afford housing and a decent life. One cannot judge the homeless lifestyle if there is no insight. No one can understand the life of poverty and homelessness unless there has been exposure and have lived through that. Homeless children are living in poverty because of mistakes their guardians or parents have made. These children go through unimaginable events in their life. Most of the time, Homeless youth are either abused physically and mentally. They are innocent humans who have to choice but to grow up and live a life they did not choose to live. Children all around the world are living in hunger everyday of their lives. People are not willing to help. Even some law enforcement, who are leaders in the community show no compassion or empathy towards homeless individuals. The people who are depended on for the safety of the community are being ruthless towards homeless people in the community. Homeless people in this case are very vulnerable. Money should not define a person, but it comes to show that money sadly, does to have a tremendous impact on how a person is treated. When people see a homeless person they probably try to walk the other way to avoid being asked for money. Many people don't think about the homeless; they just think about how to avoid them. People think "that doesn't affect me," but it does. Homelessness affects more than just the people suffering from it. Not many people know how much money they are actually giving to homeless shelters. Helping the homeless is a big deal and should be dealt with, but not with the way the government is handling it. The government throws an enormous amount of money around and builds a few rickety buildings and thinks this solves the problem, but it doesn't. Putting money into something that doesn't work is no way to solve a problem. There is approximately 3.5 million homeless people in the US ("Overview of Homelessness"). Americans are responsible for all of these people whether they know it or not ("Homeless Stats"). The government should be spending money to help the homeless become productive citizens, instead of on shelters that serve only as a temporary, ineffective fix.
This great nation of awesome power and abundant resources is losing the battle against homelessness. The casualties can be seen on the street corners of every city in American holding an ?I will work for food? sign. Homeless shelters and rescue missions are at full capacity. There is no room at the inn for the nation?s indigent. Anyone who has studied this issue understands that homelessness is a complex problem. Communities continue to struggle with this socio-economic problem while attempting to understand its causes and implement solutions. The public and private sectors of this country are making a difference in the lives of the homeless by addressing the issues of housing, poverty and education.
There is always a way for people to have a big impact in our society to help the homeless. Thesis: Homeless people are mistreated by others because of discrimination, misjudgment, and stereotyping based on their appearance and the condition of their clothes. We also need to change our attitudes towards the homeless and treat them with dignity and respect.
Ridiculed, called animals, blamed for diseases and mental illness by society, the homeless feel alienated. Even though they are thought of as “hobos” and “bag ladies,” the homeless are Americans with feelings that at one time had dreams and goals in life. Couple of days ago I saw a homeless people that seemed to be ranging from all ages. Homeless people I thought were mostly people who had lost their job as a result couldn’t pay for their living conditions such as a house and or apartment. After looking at this teenage boy has made me wonder what caused each homeless person that they have to ask for money. As I grew up, I got a better understanding of why these people were hand paddling for a living. I learned that most of these people had lost their jobs and or had bad money managing skills. Homeless people are everywhere around the world no matter the country and state. Near a gas station in Seattle I noticed a teenager who looked as if he was a senior in high school. He looked as if he was only the streets for a couple of day to a maximum of two weeks. Most homeless people I see are mostly lived like that for weeks and month. Also have that certain smell I can never forget.
There are many misconceptions about The Homeless. Homeless people are some of the most vulnerable members of society, many are severely physical or mental ill, physically disabled, suffered from physical and/or sexual abuse, or have been incarcerated. Instead of recognizing them as victims who deserve our support and compassion, many are treating them as criminals who need to be punished. The stereotype that people are homeless became so because of their own faults and failures creates a notion that people with homes are, in some sad way, better than homeless people. This ignorance stereotype makes homelessness even more difficult to overcome.
Instead of criticizing homeless people and automatically labeling them with stereotypes, we should learn to not be so quick to judge but instead see how we can help those who are less fortunate. A lot of times people are in a certain situation for a reason whether they have lost their home, job, etc. We should not be so quick to think or say that a person is homeless because of drugs or because they put themselves in their situation because frankly, that is not always the case. Less fortunate people need a hand as well as someone who could help provide opportunities for them. One could simply help a homeless individual by helping them find a job. Prior to having to deal with having one of the closest, most important people in my life be homeless, I had not given much thought or even consideration to this topic. Most people, myself included, are too quick to judge those who are in these unfortunate circumstances. If only we would take the time to consider their story, and help, what kind of world would we live in ?
Homeless citizens are often considered a burden, more over, society’s burden. The down-and-out seem, to the average citizen, to be habitually on drugs, or prone to violent behaviour. Should it not be our responsibility to help those who can not help themselves? That is just it, some of the impoverished are living under such appalling conditions that they can not pick themselves up onto their own strength. I have a few questions that I would like the average person to think about regarding the homeless: Why are they on the streets? What can they do about it? Is this society’s dilemma and should society lend a selfless helping hand to clean up the streets? These are just a few questions that I will attempt to give my opinion on and if one does not agree that they may, without prejudice, hear what I have to say. I hope that one would honestly take to heart the value of a human life. People all have a living, breathing soul in need of some sort of ‘fire’ in order to kick-start their life back together.

In the city of Hagerstown, I’ve noticed there are a lot of interracial couples with mixed children. Now, while this may not bother me, I have noticed comments from friends, who say they are accepting of this, but still make comments that leaves one to wonder. I can’t understand why this is still considered to be taboo or unacceptable. Actually, I’m a little jealous, because to me, they seem to have some of the prettiest children. Anyway, I think if two people find a way towards each other’s hearts and find love, it shouldn’t make a bit of difference, or people shouldn’t look sideways at them or make smart remarks about the couple or their children. At the end of the day I see it like this, we may not all be interracially mixed but we are mixed in some way be it culturally or whatever. My Italian friends complain about Irish blood, my Puerto Rican friend complain about being mixed with Mexican blood, etc. I think we all need to get over it and move on to worry about more important issues in this country.
“Homeless people are lazy because there is always a way to get out of poverty” This is a misconception that I grew up with. I grew up in a strong Mexican culture household. My family believes that people who want to succeed will have the willingness to put in the work. My mother recognizes that there are many opportunities for people to take advantage of. She is a kind-hearted woman who would with no doubt offer a lending hand, but she also has some biases.

Homelessness has never been a topic I have been passionate about. While there was never an issue with interacting with the homeless or serving the homeless, I have never gone out of my way to research homelessness, look into causes, or look into conditions. The readings gave some insight into conditions, but the interviews in the journal article clashed with an assumption I had in that they made the people seem bitter. Past interactions with homeless people led me to assume that unfortunate people still found a way to be grateful for what they had. My interactions today led me to realize that these are not mutually exclusive, as there was a mix of both feelings. Another assumption was that homeless people would have some hygiene issues. The
