There are many different determinants of health and wellbeing as previously discussed. However, these determinants do not act alone but, they all intersect. These means multiple factors determine an individual’s health. I will now explain how age, gender, social status and communities can all affect health but, there are also other factors, such as race and ethnicity, that intersect to determine a person’s health. The health and wellbeing of a person can be determined even from a young age. Children are particularly vulnerable to the socio-economic conditions they live in as they group up. This is because children are at an important stage of development that can determine their health and wellbeing for their entire life. Māori children are an interesting case study as it shows the impacts of being an indigenous child growing up in a colonised society. In New Zealand, Pākehā culture …show more content…
Gender inequalities, such as the gender pay gap, mean that women may find it harder to access the health care she needs. This is because people of lower socio-economic status on average, use less resources available to them. Also, a woman’s health may suffer if she is of lover socio-economic status and therefore, she needs more health care. Women who are stay at home mothers may also find it difficult to access health care due to the design of public transport. Women in the city who cannot drive, may rely on public transport to get them to their medical appointments. However, studies have found that the transport systems are often catered to those who go into the city to work. They do not suit people who are going to another suburb. Women may also have to time their appointments around their children’s schooling schedule. All of these factors mean that it can be harder for women to access the health care she needs. This can have a long term effect on her
According to the World Health Organisation (2017) the social determinants of health are defined as the conditions where people are born, grown, work and live, which also includes the health system. The social determinants of health determined populations health’s outcomes and therefore linked with health inequalities (WHO, 2017)
Social determinants of health have attracted the attention of governments, policy makers and international health organisations over the last three decades (Hankivsky & Christoffersen 2008). This is because social conditions which people are born in, live and work play an important role in their health outcomes (WHO 2015). According to Kibesh (1200) social determinants drive health disparities, disrupts the human developmental process and undermine the quality of life and opportunities for people and families (ref). Thus, several theories have been developed over the years to provide in-depth understanding of the social determinants of health and to reduce health inequalities (Hankivsky & Christoffersen, 2008). However, there is still significant
The term health is greatly influenced by factors both positively and negatively (Tones & Green 2004). An example portraying this statement, a persons’ income. A person who earns a high salary is a result of high educational achievement and a well paid job such as a Professor. They will have the advantage of experiencing both for themselves plus their family, better access to healthcare (Bupa) and live healthier lives Whereas for a person who earns a low salary and is working as a cleaner, both them and their family may be prone to chronic illnesses. This is due to lack of accessibility to healthcare and lower social being. This essay will be exploring factors that have impacted on a person’s socio-economic class, his/her social situation and

The Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) are an array of components, which have an impact on ones health. These determinants include; but are not limited to, culture, biological factors, education, age, gender, etc. The SDoH are responsible for much of the world’s avoidable health inequalities (WHO, 2012). Health inequality is not about having poor health. It involves a variety of aspects including not having access to sufficient healthcare, and living in specific types of environments (Marmot & Wilkinson, 1999).

There is a preconception that all college students will gain an extra fifteen pounds also called the “freshman fifteen”, when they start school because of all of the unhealthy options and unlimited amount of access to food. Before ever trying to even create a healthy lifestyle it’s important to understand how people become obese and unhealthy, how to help prevent it and how being healthy and having wellness benefits your life. Let’s take a look at how it all starts.
When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.
Health psychology is a relatively new concept rapidly growing and could be defined as the biological and psychological influences affect ones behaviour also bringing in social influences of health and illness (MacDonald, 2013). Biological determinants consider genetic and biological factors of an illness whereas psychological determinants focus on the psychological factors such as why people behave the way they do when dealing with issues such as anxiety and stress. Models such as the Health Belief Model and Locus of Control were developed in attempt to try and explain psychological issues around a chronic illness such as breast cancer (Ogden, 2012). Sociological factors can cause an enormous amount of pressure for one to behave in a certain way for example gender roles in society and religious considerations when dealing with health beliefs. Health Beliefs can be defined as one’s own perception to their own personal health and illness and health behaviours (Ogden, 2012). There are also theories and models used to explain pain and coping with diagnosis such as Moos and Schaefer (1984) Crisis theory and Shontz (1975) cycle of grief people go through when being diagnosed with a serious illness.
Mental health refers to the state of individuals psychologically, emotionally and socially. Mental health affects a person’s emotions, feelings, thoughts, and sections when exposed to different situations. Furthermore, mental health is responsible for a person’s reaction to stress and other social conditions. Any individual that leads a healthy lifestyle will say that healthy living is more than just a fad or goal, it’s a way of life. Changing certain aspects of one’s current lifestyle to become healthier is not the final goal, rather, the objective of setting these short and long term goals is maintenance. Therefore, I choose to change an aspect of my current lifestyle that I felt would facilitate the improvement of my health and would later become a change that I can maintain over the course of my life; I choose to increase the amount of water I drink per day to improve my inner bodily health. I decided on this change because I feel that setting a smaller goal that I could easily monitor and execute will expedite future changes to my lifestyle,

Health is considered a complete wellness of a body including physical, mental and social well-being and Holistic Health is considered a wellness of a whole body including mind, body and spirit. According to American Holistic Medicine Association “Holistic medicine is the art and science of healing that addresses the whole person – body, mind and spirit” (Wollumbin, page 3). Holistic Health is an alternate way to treat, prevent, and wellness of an illness and achieves the best possible level of health. It focuses on the whole body rather than just symptoms or diseases. It is an approach to heal the physical, psychological, environmental, spiritual, nutritional health of one’s being. For each individual, the definition of holistic health is different and in simple words it is an alternate way of treatment where physical, mental, emotional and spiritual works equally together to attain a health. In western medicine, standard treatment is given with drugs or surgery according to symptoms or diseases or injuries where a doctor or a physician determines the ways of treatment and the patient has to follow the recommendations. Whereas, holistic health is a complete opposite way to treat the illness where patients cooperate in their illnesses, take the responsibility of their treatments, make their own decision for own level of well-being and thoroughly participate in their health care plan.
My personal health has been something I constantly think about. Whether it’s myself, my parents, my doctor, or others that bring it up, I’m reminded that I need to eat healthier or exercise more, etc. I know that I need to get better about what I eat and try to work more exercise into my daily routine, I just find it hard to find the motivation to go and actually accomplish what I know that I need to do. Especially in today’s society where we’re surrounded by a lot of non-healthy food, and getting access to healthy food is more expensive than the latter, it’s hard to make the better choice and choose the healthy option. I’m hoping now that I’m in college that I’m able to get better at taking care of myself than I have in the past.
