In the story, ”Gryphon,” by Charles Baxter, Tommy, a boy in the story, had sometimes defended Miss Ferenczi. I think Tommy defends Miss Ferenczi because he had interest in her and wanted to know about her more as a teacher. Miss Ferenczi told the students that she had seen an animal has its body half bird and half lion. While Tommy was going home on the bus, on line 413, Tommy said “She was strange.”. I think this has a part that meant Tommy started to have interest in her as a teacher because he felt something different from other teachers. Here are some reasons why I think that Tommy has interest in Miss Ferenczi and defended her. Why do you think Tommy had defended Miss Ferenczi?

Common Name: Burmese Python Scientific Name: Python Molurus Bivittatus I. Introduction One of the five largest species of snakes in the world is now finding a home in the Florida Everglades. The Burmese python has a dark colored eye-catching patterned skin and is known for its calm and relaxed temperament. Because of the attractiveness of their skin pattern and docile nature, it is one of the large snakes of choice among reptile owners. Unfortunately, these snakes can reach huge lengths and weigh upwards of 200lbs making them difficult to keep. As carnivores, Burmese pythons kept as pets need a diet of small rodents or rabbits.
Burmese pythons (Python molurus) are popular pets in the United States because of their attractive color pattern, reputed docility, and the allure, for some, of owning a giant snake. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, approximately 99,000 Burmese pythons were imported to the United States between 1996 and 2006, compared to only 17,000 between 1970 and 1995. The species is classified by the World Conservation Union as “near threatened” in its native range in Southeast Asia due to exportation for the pet trade and hunting for skins. Thousands of pythons are also captive bred each year in the U.S. for sale as pets. An inexperienced snake keeper who takes home a 20-inch hatchling is, within a year, responsible for a brawny eight-foot predator. Unable to
The Egyptians often included lions to symbolize strength, leadership, loyalty, and war. The top of the palette also includes a human face with bull horns. This was done in attempt to represent the gods the ancient Egyptians believed in. These gods are associated with power, masculinity, and fertility.
When I was little, I used to stay up late at night, watching old movies with my father. He worked at night, so on his nights off, he often could not sleep. Our dad-daughter bond was, no doubt, forged by our love of old black and white and even cheesy films. It was on one of those late nights that I first saw a huge snake coiled next to a tree, draped in a glittery sheep’s fur. I am sure that my eyes were big in awe the whole time, for to this day, when I watch or even read mythological stories, I feel the same childhood awe.
This provides powerful insight into the role Bigfoot like creatures played in Native American cultures. Some tribes were not afraid of the creatures, considering them kind and helpful, while peacefully coexisting with them. Other tribes found them to be more violent and dangerous creatures. The fact that these tribes called the animals Stick Indians or Brush Indians seems to suggest that the creatures were simply other tribes they did not get along with opposed to a village of mythical creatures. Some examples of Bigfoot like creatures in Native American tribes include the Chiye – Tanka, the Lofa, the Maxemista, and the popular Sasquatch. The Chiye – Tanka was the Bigfoot like creature of the Sioux Indians (“Native American,” n.d.). This animal
What is Bigfoot? The researchers describe Bigfoot as standing from seven to ten feet tall, weighing over five hundred pounds, and having a full coat of hair. Throughout several myths, monsters are described as many diverse creatures. At first glance, they all seem very distinctive. However, each monster is like a combination of several qualities and characteristics that are matched in different ways to form the monsters that appear in myths such as Hercules, Bellerophon, and Perseus. All monsters have very distinct looks that make them inferior to humans. Generally, they are a mixture of two or more different animals such as snakes, lions, or humans and they may have multiple heads. For example, Cerberus was a horrific three-headed dog that had the tail of a dragon and his back was covered with snakes. Several monsters have some part of them from a snake. Snakes symbolize an evil quality and that is why many monsters are forms of them. Cerberus had his whole back covered in snakes and a dragon tail. Both of these are snake-like parts that contribute to Cerberus looking terrifying. His tail is from a dragon which is very similar to a snake and his back is filled with snakes like fur. The Hydra of Lerna is also an im...
Achilles’ heel, Pandora’s box and the helm of Hades; these are just some of the terms that people often hear in their daily intercourse and interactions which are used to describe a certain thing or situation. For example, most people use the term Achilles’ heel to refer to someone’s weakness. On the other hand, Pandora’s Box refers to a possibility of danger through which was the result of one’s action or choice. These terms were derived from the Greek mythology, a collection of stories which originated in ancient Greece. Moreover, “a myth is classically defined as a story that has significance to a culture (or species), a story that addresses fundamental and difficult questions that human beings ask” (Abraham, 2009). Like the modern day scientific method, creation begins with a simple observation and questions. And from questions, the Greek mythology was born. It all began from man’s curiosity about his entire being, his purpose, identity, nature and other empirical things that he had observed. Through the Greek’s creative minds, they created divinities which would be held responsible for the occurrence of different phenomenon (such as earthquake, night and day, shift of season and etc.) Though, no historian can pinpoint or estimate the exact era when Greek mythology was created. Ancient Greeks are not only the bearer of these stories; they were also the bearer of a school of thought called the Classical Heritage. This discipline has a firm focus on the quality of knowledge which highlights the accurate and factual depiction and description of thoughts. The ancient Greeks used these stories as a reason and implicitly, they just use these stories and metaphors such as nymphs and naiads to personify the frightening creatures on th...

Greek mythology is a body of myths and teachings that belong to the ancient Greeks concerning Titans, gods, and heroes. According to Alan Dundes, a myth is a sacred narrative explaining how the world and humankind assumed their present form (Dundes 1). Though now it may be referred to as mythology, to the ancient Greeks it was an aspect of their religion. Like many other pre-Christian societies, the ancient Greeks deemed things that were important in their lives, such as fire, water, air, and lightning to be gods which govern the world. The gods of the ancient Greeks had a complicated genealogy with many generations of gods and goddesses. The tales of these gods were woven into an immense variety of fables. The fables of the Greek gods were handed down through word of mouth, from one generation to another, long before written logs were used (History). The fables that were passed down show that the Greeks used the tales to give answers to the questions, such as where do we come from? How did we get here? Why are we here? Questions like these are human nature and the basis of all religions.
Why would a Rhinoceros be so important to anybody? I mean all they are, is simply an animal. We see animal’s every day in our lifetime, maybe not as big as a Rhino but still. Animals are animals. Well apparently not so much to the Shang Dynasty. They were so much more than that. A Rhinoceros was a very sacred symbol that showed great power. Only the emperor was allowed to own them. The Shang Dynasty was the very beginning of the Bronze Age, they had made many food and wine vessels made of gold used for ancestral offerings. These traditions still continue in China, considering there is still and Emperor.
