Google Glass Google Glass: Enhancing Tomorrow’s Vision? 8. Google Glass Is this device just a “smartphone on our nose”? On one hand, yes, the Google Glass is somewhat of a “smartphone on our nose”, especially when looking at the software. It can perform basic smartphone functions such as text messaging, Google searches, Google hangouts, as well as taking photos and 720p videos with its 5-megapixel camera. It can also give navigation directions when on the move. Additionally, it can even give information regarding the current weather and news headlines! However, one of the major disadvantages of the Google Glass is its dependency on the smartphone when it comes to performing GPS-based functions. Yet, overall, these widely used and loved functions similar to that of a smartphone partially make the Google Glass a “smartphone on your nose”, but they might also ultimately be one of the major reasons people will be purchasing it and enjoying its use. On the other hand, no, it is quite different from a smartphone that we would simply wear on our nose, since the Google Glass has, in fact, some quite distinct features, especially when it comes to the hardware. First off, Glass is lightweight, bendable and thus adjustable thanks to its titanium frame and its nose contacts, making it a lot more comfortable than simply wearing a smartphone on our nose. Its 720p on screen display could be compared to that of a 25-inch screen observed standing 8 feet away from it and the touch pad situated on its side allows four-direction tapping and swiping interpretation.
