Types of Family Approaches In family nursing, there is four diverse types of approaches: family as context, family as client, family as system, and family as component of society. I have taken care of children from each of the four. The family as context, the children’s family was a huge part of the care. In the family as client, the whole family is evaluated on how the feel. The family as system involves interactions within the family. The family as a component of society deals with how the family has done within the community regarding resources and support areas. The purpose of this paper is the explain the four different approaches and give examples of each. Approaches Family as Context Family as context is one of the types of family approaches. …show more content…
It is basically involving the whole family within the care, and taking them into consideration, not just having them in the background. Family centered care can be used here due to the aspect that the family helps aid in the healing process by providing strength and support (Tripodi M et al, 2017, para.10). I have seen this happen a few times, especially when I was in nursing school. The one situation that I can recall the best is when a father of a family had a high PSA level and had to get a biopsy done. The doctor asked about how it ran in the family and how it had affected the other family members in the past, especially when it came to treatment options. The father told him about his family’s history. Then the doctor went on to talk to his two children and wife. He asked them how they were handling the situation, which each of them were handling it differently. The mother went through cancer with her father, but it was a different type so she was very concerned about the prostate being cancerous. The boy of the family didn’t know exactly what to think due to him not really having much knowledge about healthcare, but he was still worried none the less. The daughter was a nurse so she knew exactly what could be the options: just enlargement or cancerous. The daughter was better at calming the father than the mother, who was very upset about the diagnosis. The mother and daughter both stated that if it came …show more content…
This means that they have someone in the family with a diagnosis and they are within their community or society being productive or trying to get help. For example, I see a little boy quite often due to him needing his medication for hemophilia. They are in support groups and I believe that they even have a donation group set up so that they raise money for people with hemophilia, because it’s hard on the little guy to get IV medication twice per week. The family is functioning in society and they seem to be doing it well. The support group has helped them, and the donation group has helped a lot of people. The donation group has helped raise a lot of awareness towards hemophilia. It was a huge adjustment for the family due to the hemophilia in their son, but they are doing well with it. When asking about how people at school react to the diagnosis, they are very forthcoming and welcoming to him. They say he has a bunch of friends, and even though he must be careful, he still plays and does everything other kids do. He says he loves going to
In today’s society, a family can be defined as “a group of individuals who are connected by kinship, affection, dependency, or trust” (Saskatoon Health Region, 2013). With the increasing population and diversity of families in current clinical settings, family-centered care has become an essential component of nursing care. The idea of family-centered care involves collaboration and communication between health care professionals and the family to provide mutual decision making around the patients’ health. Wright & Leahey, 2009). To aid in family-centered care, Wright and Leahey suggest a 15-minute interview as a structured and efficient assessment tool to collect detailed information from a family.
Family centred care and comfort care theory both work for the well being of patient. Family centred care focus to work with family while providing care for the sick child. Family and pediatric staff works in collaboration to make care plan that works the best for sick child (Coyne, O'Neill, Murphy, & Costello, 2011). Similarly, comfort care theory focus on child’s physical, psychospiritual, sociocultural, and environmental aspects. “When comfort needs are addressed in one context, total comfort is enhanced in the remaining context” (Kolcaba & Dimarco, 2005, p. 190). When nurses apply comfort care theory, it is to achieve holistic care of sick children by focusing on all aspects (Kolcaba
Two potential barriers to the Patient-Family Centered Care model are time and patient/family expectations. Nursing is a demanding job that is known for it's fast paced and often hectic environment. While caring for several patients at a time, it might be difficult to make time to discuss and involve patients and their family in all aspects of their care. This could lead to the patient/family feeling left out or even lead to fear about why information if being kept from them. To address this barrier I will set aside time to spend with each of my patients solely dedicated to discussion about the care they are receiving as well as provide an opportunity to voice questions and concerns.
The Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM) is a well-known comprehensive and multidimensional template used by nurses to assess families. CFAM begins by having the nurse visit with the family and gain insight on the family’s functioning at a particular point in time. Interviewing the family allows the nurse to assess and identify potential issues. Furthermore, the CFAM consists of three main assessment categories, known as structural, developmental, and functional. Each of these categories contains several subcategories that allow the nurse to examine all aspects of a family’s functioning. The goal of the CFAM is for the nurse to openly discuss family issues, provide insight to families from an outside perspective and guide them towards their own problem solving tactics. CFAM allows families and nurse to develop a plan of care that is mutually agreed upon. The following paper illustrates a family assessment completed using the CFAM and applies nursing diagnoses and interventions relevant to the family’s current issues (Wright & Leahey, 2013).

A great deal of emotions occur in the postpartum period, emotions that you could never understand unless you have been there. Before I attended a conference on depression in pregnancy & postpartum the thought of fathers suffering from postnatal depression never even entered my mind. As far as I was concerned, It was only associated it with giving birth. The knowledge I gained has not only changed my outlook on the subject but the way that I interact with and educate my patients. My focus is no longer just on the dyad of mom and baby it’s on mom, dad and baby if there is a partner involved at all. The purpose of this essay is to explore a particular concept related to professional caring in nursing. It will discuss the patient/client situation, exploration of the concept, how the concept relates to personal caring through noticing, interpreting, responding and reflection. The concept that will be explored in this paper is empathy.
Also, the whole family needs to come to term with the health condition, make change in priorities and schedule, and keep the family. For example, it can be much more stressful for a young or a newly married couple because they may have more experience to overcome life's difficulties. As a result, as with individual maturation, family development can be delayed or even revert to a previous level of functioning (Hockenberry, p 762.) Therefore, health care providers need to apply family development theory while planning care for a child and family with chronic health condition. Indeed, family centered care should be a part of that intervention. Parents and family members have huge and comprehensive caregiving responsibilities for their chronically ill child at home or at hospital. Moreover, the main goal taking care of chronic ill child is to “minimize the progression of the disease and maximize the child’s physical, cognitive, psychological potential” (Hockenberry, p 763). Therefore, it is essential to family being part of the child care to give highest quality of care. On the other hand, we are as a part of the health care provider need to give attention to all
Like any family, certain issues and forms of stress are constantly occurring within a family. Every family is unique in its ability to adjust and overcome challenges. The ongoing interactions of the family members influence its functioning ability and overall structure (Kaakinen, Gedaly-Duff, Padgett-Coehlo, & Harmon-Hanson, 2010). A family nurse has the power to promote wellness by ensuring the affective functions of the family are being met among the members of the Goldsmith family and family communication is strong for effective decision-making. Affective function is the relationships shared between the members within the family...
The condition of trauma patient changes suddenly depending on the severity of the injury or the illness, which becomes even more traumatic for the health-care staff and family in dealing with these changes. According to Freeman (2012:10), nurses help the family get through difficult times, by being open to promote trust, providing education and information to the family and also referring them to relevant people such as psychologists. When the family receives bad news they also give the family member time and space to ventilate their feelings, which most of the time they get positive feed-back from the family which boosts their
In health care, there are many different approaches throughout the field of nursing. When considering the field of family nursing, there are four different approaches to caring for patients. This paper will discuss the different approaches along with a scenario that covers that approach. The approaches that will be discussed include family as a context, family as a client, family as a system, and family as a component to society. Each of these scenarios are approach differently within the field of nursing.
The main motive of this paper is to demonstrate how the nurse completes a health assessment of this family by using Gordon’s 11 identified functional health patterns approach in a holistic view of the family (GCU NRS-429V Lecture Note, 2011). Through open end questions, the nurse predicts potential problems in health perception, nutrition, sleep/rest, elimination, activity/exercise, cognitive, sensory-perception, self-perception, role relationship, sexuality, coping, and evaluates the behavioral pattern within the family. Nursing diagnoses are formulated which will assist the nurse to design a care plan according to the family’s needs.
How can a simple six letter word be so complicated to define? Family is a single word that is open to many interpretations depending on the individual. If you try to condense this ideal to a single clinical definition you end up excluding numerous members of society. What comes to mind when you think of the word family? While in the most broken down and literal sense, family means a relative with a blood or legal bond, the word family can encompass blood relations, adoptions, and even intentional relationships such as friendships. Economies, cultures, and backgrounds can further differentiate what one’s perception of a family is. For many people, including me, a family is so much more. It is the amount of commitment, cohesiveness, and importance
Everyone seems to define family differently, however, the significance of family is the same. For you, family means everything. You can always count on your parents and siblings for help and love. Family is very valuable and important to you and should never be taken for granted. No one can deny that family is the foundation of our generation. A family is where we all start our life journey and helps us grow to be successful throughout our lives.
Family is the important base to the entire of human in their life. There are several principles of moral and ethics that should be applied in family. Firstly, it’s all about love among the family members. Love is an emotion that felt by an individual which is unconditionally given by one individual to another individual. Secondly, giving and receiving among the family members. Giving and receiving make the love flows highly in family whereas giving is an ethics that should been applied among family members. Giving something without expect anything shows the unselfishness of love. Third principle is thoughts, words and deeds. Thoughts, words and deeds should consider carefully because it has its own consequences. The action must be ethical because it could hurt other family members if it’s unethical which could destroy the relationship among each of the family members. Another principle is present reality and future potential. Every of the family members work should be in progress because it’s important to them to help their family members to be safe and supportive.
There are so many different types of family relationships. Whatever form a family takes; it is an important part of everyone’s life. My family has played an important role in my life. Good family relationships serve as a foundation to interactions with others. Supportive families will help children to thrive. The quality of the family relationship is more important than the size of the family. Making the relationships priority, communication, and providing support for one another is key to developing relationships. Family relationships are what make up our world today; they shape the ways that we see things and the ways that we do things.
