In 1900, Pyrmont was an important port and industrial area, with a population of almost 30 000 people. There was a wide range of industries and services present including wharves, dockyards, warehouses, abattoirs, wool stores, railway yards and even an incinerator for the disposal of Sydney’s waste. It was deemed a working-class suburb with a predominantly Irish/Catholic population. As the income for Pyrmont was only modest, semi-detached cottages were the most common type of housing present. In the 1960’s however, Pyrmont-Ultimo was deteriorating at a fast rate and became an unfortunate example of urban decay.

The lack of available social housing is mainly due to stock levels steadily diminishing each year since 1980, after tenants bought nearly half-a-million council houses under the ‘Right to Buy’ scheme. This coupled with the decline in house building; which is currently at its lowest level since 1946, has brought about a shameful lack of affordable public housing (Turffrey, 2010).

Housing Affordability in Australia has become the focus point for urban planners in recent years. In particular, South East Queensland (SEQ) has experienced significant pressure as the demand for property and affordable dwellings increases and population growth in the region continues. The issue has come to the forefront in discussions for local governments in the region and there is a real need to address the problem of housing affordability. The subject of affordability is complex and is contributed to by a number of factors including the impost created by Council processes, which is the scope of the HAF-T5 Project.
Throughout the course of events in The Great Gatsby, the watchful eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg stare into the depths of each character, while the Doctor serves as a god of conscience from his middle ground between two worlds. As the creations of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the characters whose stories unwind before us live twisted webs of lives in which there is a distorted view of a greater force outside their worlds. Dr. Eckleburg merely watches over the "grey land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it" at the spot where "when the drawbridge is up to let barges through, the passengers on waiting trains can stare at the dismal scene for as long as half an hour" (27-8). This is where Dr. Eckleburg reigns; this is the site of a final...
Beginning in the 1960s, middle and upper class populations began moving out of the suburbs and back into urban areas. At first, this revitalization of urban areas was 'treated as a 'back to the city' movement of suburbanites, but recent research has shown it to be a much more complicated phenomenon' (Schwirian 96). This phenomenon was coined 'gentrification' by researcher Ruth Glass in 1964 to describe the residential movement of middle-class people into low-income areas of London (Zukin 131). More specifically, gentrification is the renovation of previously poor urban dwellings, typically into condominiums, aimed at upper and middle class professionals. Since the 1960s, gentrification has appeared in large cities such as Washington D.C., San Francisco, and New York. This trend among typically young, white, upper-middle class working professionals back into the city has caused much controversy (Schwirian 96). The arguments for and against gentrification will be examined in this paper.
The issue firstly discussed will be of how the state/public sector in England demonstrates in what way the mixed economy of welfare operates in the housing sector. Public housing in England is also referred to as ‘council housing’ & these types of housing are provided by government for those ...

The government housing within Pyrmont is still there and is experiencing urban decay compared to the rest of Pyrmont. This has created conflict amongst the community. Some people believe that they should knock it down and build more apartments to increase the population of Pyrmont and therefore help Pyrmont’s urban growth. Some believe that they should be relocated as they don’t deserve to live in an area that is so wanted. The other people believe that they deserve to be there as they have been there for a while. This is an example of different views of equality and the way a council should be run. The government housing is different from the rest of the area as the houses are old and contrast the urban skyscrapers around it. This asks the question of whether we demolish these houses and relocate the people to a different area to increase the urban growth and make Pyrmont all urban renewed or leave

This brings me to the main part of not only this park but most parks in general, the grass. Woodhaven County Park is mostly covered in grass. Besides the areas previously mentioned, such as the benches and landscaped areas. There are also very few trees in the center of the park. Giving the user the most open area as possible. So no matter the activity one performs at the park, there will be room to get it done. All without the need for worrying about running into a tree. Which is “perfect for a quiet stroll, kite flying, flag football, or just relaxing and enjoying a good book.” (sdparks.org) This is the source of all the joy and laughter heard up and down the neighborhood. Even our four-legged friends can enjoy this area of the park, albeit
This section is right near a free parking lot and is set on a hill. The trees are spread out, but provide ample shade for you to sit down with a blanket and good book for a day relaxing. If you want to spend a rejuvenating day in nature, I suggest you visit the Longenecker Horticultural
The park seems small, but even on a busy day, no one waits in line. There is plenty of seating for parents at tables and benches and in a small amphitheater that could become space for an impromptu performance. At first, the parks seems placed in an odd location right up against a busy parking lot, but on second thought it is the best spot for easy access. The playground's large structures and brightly colored umbrellas beckon to those traveling down Stevenson Boulevard.
