When you think about a great mathematician who comes to your mind? Do you think of Isaac Newton, Archimedes, or Da Vinci? These are men who greatly influenced the world with their mathematical achievements and study’s. A name that might not come to your head however is Edwin Hubble. Hubble is best known for his discoveries in Astronomy, but without math he wouldn’t be able to make his observations like he did. This makes him one of the best mathematicians the world knows. He started with a humble beginning to making the connection of science and math like no one had ever seen before.
Edwin Hubble was born in Marshfield, Missouri on November 29th 1889. His father John Powell Hubble married his mother Virginia Lee Hubble. At a young age Edwin love reading about new things. Space was one of the things from a young age that interested him. He loved to read science fiction books and at a young age and one of his favorites was “20,000 leagues under the sea” by Jules Verne. When he was ten in 1898 he moved to Chicago with his parents and 7 siblings. He liked the city of Chicago and was interested in how all the skyscrapers were so tall.
In high school Edwin was a great student, but he was better known for sports where he was an Illinois state record holder in the high jump. He also played basketball and at first in his life he wanted to play sports. As he got older he realized that his true passion was in the sky. He strived in math and science class all throughout his studies. His senior year he decided that he was going to attend the University of Chicago.

The correlation he made between math and science is something that had never been seen before and maybe the best that there will ever be. I think he changed the way people looked at math for the rest of time.
I’m glad I spent the time to research and find out more about this man. He has made me more excited to go to class and learn about math so I can make some connections of my own and make me a better person. I can’t wait to look to the sky and learn because of what he has taught me and showed the world. My interest in space has been uplifted and shot up because I realize I can put them together. I credit Hubble to my interest in the new world and everyone else who wants to imagine as well.

He would often receive books and encylopedias from his parents so that he could further expand his knowledge. During his final high school year his parents arranged for him to take advanced mathematics courses at a community college that was local to them.

In 1946, an astrophysicist named Dr. Lyman Spitzer proposed that a telescope in space would reveal better and clearer images that are even far from earth than any ground telescope. This idea was very extravagant because no one had yet launched a rocket into outer space. As the US space program excelled quickly over the early years, Spitzer lobbied NASA and Congress to develop a space telescope. In 1975, the European Space Agency and NASA began to develop the telescope that would change astronomy for ever. In 1977, Congress approved funding for the development of the space telescope and NASA named Lockheed Martin Aerospace Company as the prime contractor to oversee its construction. In 1983, the telescope was finished and was named after Edwin Hubble, an American astronomer whose observations of variable stars in distant galaxies confirmed that the universe was expanding and gave support to the "Big Bang" theory.

Albert Einstein was born March 14, 1879 in Ulm, Germany. Around age 10 or 11, Einstein became curious about the mysteries of science and longed for a greater understanding. As a child, Einstein took music lessons; he learned to play the piano and violin and continued through out is life. As a young child, his parents moved during his school career: once to Italy then a second time to Switzerland where he graduated in 1896. Einstein was educated at the Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich where he learned to teach physics and mathematics. After graduation in 1901, he could not find a job so he decided to take a respectful job at the Swiss Patent Office. While working there, he returned to school to pursue his Doctorate degree which he completed in 1905.

Eudoxus completed many great things and without his contributions math and science would not have developed as they did. He set the stage for many great mathematicians and astronomers to create new laws and theories that furthered our comprehension of math and our solar system. Eudoxus was one of the greatest mathematicians and astronomers our world has ever known, yet not many know of his name or recognize him as the brilliant man he was. He is deserving of everyones attention and respect.
Carl Friedrich Gauss is revered as a very important man in the world of mathematicians. The discoveries he completed while he was alive contributed to many areas of mathematics like geometry, statistics, number theory, statistics, and more. Gauss was an extremely brilliant mathematician and that is precisely why he is remembered all through today. Although Gauss left many contributions in each of the aforementioned fields, two of his discoveries in the fields of mathematics and astronomy seem to have had the most tremendous effect on modern day mathematics.

It is interesting to note that neither of his parents had any knowledge in the areas of math or science. Even Albert, in his early years, was a very shy but curious kid that showed very little aptitude for anything. In elementary school, Albert was such an under achiever in all subjects other than math and science that his parents suspected that he might be retarded. As it turned out, Albert preferred to learn on his own and had taught himself advanced mathematics and science by the time he was a teenager.
