From the first ecological utopian novel that tackles a strict ecological array, Ecotopia is a novel that was written by Ernest Callenbach and published in 1975 that gives a perspective on environmental utopian projection. The story portrays a society that seceded from a nation to build its own eco-friendly environment. Ecotopia is a small nation that comprises mostly the Northwestern part of the United States that includes Northern California, Washington and Oregon. These states deliver most of the agricultural and other products in the U.S. such as fruits and vegetables, wine, lumber, paper and cotton (Callenbach, 1975, p. 4). Hence, when these three states separate itself to the U.S., the Americans started to experience shortage of supplies which caused a sudden economic depression in their country while the Ecotopians still continuously progressed on their own. For these reason, Americans became curious on what is going on in Ecotopia. With the approval of the president of the United States, they decided to sent out someone to go and investigate what is happening in that country. They sent out William Weston, a New York’s Times- Post internal affair reporter. The novel was arranged and narrated as a written journal and a report of Weston that details Ecotopians’ way of life in terms of economic government, philosophy, culture, agricultural and industrial infrastructure.
Differences in Culture and Philosophy
The culture and philosophy of Ecotopia is based on oneness with nature and every action that they take must be based on their “stable-state system.” Thus, this system is conceptualized to promote an eco-friendly environment which gives way to the idea that everything that is produced in this country can make an impact w...

...working on due to the last recession. I was also wondering how issues had been resolved in Ecotopians’ way as decision making is more likely to be a consensus rather than a rationalize and organize approach.
I believe that if we are going to use Ecotopia as an environmental model with Callenbach’s approach, we can somehow achieve what our today’s society needs; that is to have an eco-friendly environment where people are disciplined to take moderation in the consumption of the nature and start recycling and reuse things to ensure our future’s use of what we still have. If we are going to analyze the whole story of Ecotopia and apply it in our modern society, I must say that it will not be that easy to implement such rules and changes on this novel. However, I believe that in gradual time with smart plans and proper actions, we can somehow attain what Ecotopia is.
Society portrays the Earth as a resource, a place that provides an abundance of tools that are beneficial to one’s way of living. As time continues on, humanity’s definition of sustainability with the ecosystem becomes minor, meaning that it is not essential to their own lives. Thus, leading to the environment becoming polluted and affecting the human population. These ideas are demonstrated through these four sources: “Despair Not” by Sandra Steingraber, which provides the author’s perspective on the environmental crisis in terms of climate change.
As soon as the novel begins, we are introduced to the concept of saving the environment. The book begins with the narrator explaining his life-long dream of helping the world. He says that the cultural revolution of the 1960’s contributed to his ambition. However, as time went on he

In conclusion, I have learnt that man’s efforts to manipulate his environment started a long time ago and have only grown in size over time. I have also been able to learn how old civilizations interacted with their environment and the impact that their interaction had. I have also learnt how the industries and pursuit of modern life has affected the environment. Through his writing, I have learnt that environmental conservation can only succeed if the creation of material wealth comes second to the creation of awareness of environmental issues.
..."Ecotopia" really holds its own. I was skeptical when I started reading. It sounded like a piece of science fiction in the beginning. I was pleasantly surprised however. Typically, journalistic types of literature read more like memoirs. They are generally reflective of somebody's life or specific adventures. This book was unique in that it effectively used the journal style to convey a completely fictional novel. That was very interesting to me. Its style and tone makes it easy for the reader to believe that life could exist as presented in the text and that we have the power to save our own planet. I would definitely recommend this book not only to those interested in economy or environmentalism, but I would also suggest that it be read by (or to) every fat cat in Washington in charge of deciding how the money of the American people is to be best spent.
Ecological theory is a theory developed by Urie Bronfenbrenner that states that the “systems” around you are vitally important in human development. Within the theory there are many systems including the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem. Each system is defined by a different aspect of a person’s surroundings that would affect their development. The systems begin with the aspect that is closest to you, your day-to-day life. The Microsystem includes all of the places, people, and experiences that are found in your daily life. These include school, work, parents. friends, neighbors, and so forth. The next most impactful system is the exosystem. The mesosystem is defined by two entities within your microsysytem affecting each other. The next system is called the exosystem. The exosystem is full of things that don’t affect you directly but will eventually
The documentary talks about the idea of ecology operating in a feedback loop, where in, the process works in a constant loop, like other systems of the universe, biological, social, electrical and physical. With associating it to the patterns of how a machine works, and understanding the mechanical aspects of the society, being relative to the ecological subsystem. The idea of the feedback loop was given by Jay Forrester, where in he works out the working of the ecological world, of correcting its imbalances, stabilizing the ecosystem by a feedback. The documentary describes the constancy of the ecosystem, and thus the hierarchical structure of the society that makes it plausible to exist. The understanding of the ecosystem of being in a
If we don’t cherish what the Mother Nature gave us, the whole world would be like the setting of the movie “Soylent Green” which we will all be suffering in the future that consists of overpopulation, exhausted natural resources, pollution and global warming due to the greenhouse effect. But there is an exception if we could use the nature resources properly with an appreciative attitude and appropriate means to make the practices as harmless as possible for the earth, then we might be able to create a harmonious environment which can protect the nature and also satisfied our
Arcadian ecology animates man’s loyalty to the earth and its vital energy. White’s Arcadian ecology has been around for a while, but it didn’t get widely noticed until sometime in the Industrial Revolution era. England was fast becoming the first society in the world to enter the technological era (Worster 1994:12). In the late eighteenth century, Manchester’s capital accumulated tremendously from years of trade with the Orient. Also, the New World financed the development of a new mode of production called the factory system.
Modernism is an optimistic view of human impact on the environment that has been the dominant viewpoint for the last 200 years. The knowledge that mankind has the ability to control the environment is heavily stressed as a reason why climate change is not such a big deal. One of the core beliefs of the modernistic perspective is that people have no need to fear environmental disaster because the next technological advancement is right around the corner. Furthermore, those who share this view do not include themselves in their view of the ecosystem believing they are detached from it. Lastly, a laissez-faire approach is taken to environmental problems, focusing on progression through technology, stressing that as long as progress is made
Mary Oliver's (Clinebell, 1996, p.188) poem has a lot to say about the relatively new approach to conservation called ecopsychology. Ecopsychology combines the human element from psychology, with the study of how biological systems work together from ecology. A more in depth explanation of ecopsychology is that it seeks to help humans experience themselves as an integral part of nature (Strubbe 1997). When this is accomplished, humans can proceed to commit to "helping heal the earth, as well as healing ourselves" (Strubbe 1997, p. 293). In the past, environmental action has consisted of scaring and shaming those who over consume or do not recycle, which proved to be quite ineffective. Ecopsychology, in contrast, attempts to create positive and affirming motivations, derived from a bond of love and loyalty to nature (Bayland, 1995). Before tackling the principles, religious aspects, therapy, actions and education included in ecopsychology, it is essential to unde...
Environment Today Recently the point of saving our environment has came up. Many think that the environment is worsening, but actually is getting better thanks to writers of pieces that deal with ecocriticism in many forms. Ecocriticism is the study of literature and the environment from an integrative standpoint. Over the past few decades, many authors have stepped up to tell their readers what humans are doing to the environment in many writing ways.
Ecocriticism is “'the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment'” (Bressler 231). It holds that humans and the earth are interconnected and seeks both to explore the ways in which literature portrays this bond as well as advocates activism to help protect it. It is one of the more modern schools of literary theory but is a firmly established form of criticism, especially with the growing concern for the consequences of climate change caused by the imbalance between human consumption and environmental capacity.
Natural environment changes are increasingly threatening environmental sustainability. An environment is said to be every object that is found on earth whether living or non-living. We human use resources of the environment (water, land and air) for our own benefits. The more we use the resources of the environment the more we apply or cause pressure on the environment. When there is much pressure on the environment in such a way that the carrying capacity of the environment is over exceeded and can no longer repair itself, this may harm the environment is a big way. Some of the environmental resources such as ground water are non-renewable so if we over use them we lose them forever. Therefore it is important for us to know that our environment is important to all of us so it is important for us to take care of it by protecting it and it is also important to raise awareness on how to protect our environment. It is important for us to use resources with much care and it is our responsibility to protect the environment, it is not a duty for the government only but it is a
There are lots of environmental issues going on globally. The earth faces problems such as pollution, global warming, waste disposal, and loss of biodiversity. These are just a small amount of issues out of the so many. These environmental problems pose an abundant amount of risk to the health of humans and animals. There needs to be a solution to all these problems and that is by informing others, so that way everyone can make the environment a better place.
