Dermatology is defined as the medical practice that deals with abnormalities and diseases that affect or have visible effects on the skin. In the dermatology department trained specialists diagnose and treat an array of conditions as well skin disorders. These specialist known as dermatologists (a physician that’s specialty in recognizing and implementing treatment for skin irregularities), use certain cues in the presentation of the skin in order to gain the knowledge they need to benefit their patients. A patient showing erythema (when the skin appears red) may have a less serious first-degree (superficial) burn (a burn causing minor injury to the upper layer of skin) unless this symptom is accompanied by vesicles (small fluid filled sacs …show more content…
or blisters) which would point to a more destructive second-degree (partial-thickness) burn (a burn that not only injures the upper layers of the skin but the deeper ones as well). Burns that cause extensive damage may require dermatoplasty (a surgical procedure in which skin tissue is transplanted to a body surface damaged by disease or injury) (Mosby’s, 2009).
In addition to burns, the services of the dermatology department would be warranted for different skin lesions (areas of tissue that have been pathologically altered by injury, wound, or infection), and malignant neoplasms (cancer) like basal cell carcinoma (a slow-growing, locally invasive, but rarely metastasizing neoplasm of the skin derived from basal cells of the epidermis or hair follicles) (American Heritage, 2007), the most typical type of skin cancer, and malignant melanoma (cancer that builds from the melanocyte cells of the skin), the most …show more content…
deadly. A procedure is quite literally the steps taken to reach an end.
A medical professional will apply medical, surgical, and diagnostic procedures in order to accomplish the most positive outcome. Some steps taken in dermatology are dermabrasion (an abrasive medical procedure using wire brushes and sandpaper to remove the outer layer of skin), biopsy (a surgical procedure where a tissue sample is taken for examination under a microscope) and an allergy skin test (any test in which a suspected allergen or sensitizer is applied to or injected into the skin to determine a patient’s sensitivity to it) (Gylys, 2013). More knowledge and understanding of diseases and conditions will allow more focused and successful application of current and new
procedures.

Determining the seriousness and appropriate treatment of a burn requires its classification. Burns are classified according to three factors, the depth and number of affected tissue layers, the total percentage of the body surface that is involved, and the presence of homeostasis disruption or destruction such as respiratory distress, fluid loss, or loss of blood pressure control (Patton & Thibodeau, 2014). According to Mr. MacPherson’s appearance and symptoms, his burns are classified as second-degree or partial-thickness burns. The evidence for this diagnosis according to Patton and Thibodeau (2014), are his presenting symptoms of severe pain and the appearance of blisters, edema, and fluid loss. This type of bur...
Science and logic underpins the biomedical approach to health and illness. Willis and Elmer (2011) point out that biomedicine focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of individual anatomical structures of the body, with heavy references to science and medicine. According to the biomedical approach, the major cause of melanoma is the excessive exposure of the skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the ...
A regular skin exam (every 6-8 weeks) will help in the melanoma dectection process. Look for irregular skin growths and have the growth examined by a health care provider if the growth promotes cause for alarm.
Introduction: This report is to discuss an experiment to assess the sensory and motor functions of the facial nerve in humans. The facial nerve is one of twelve cranial nerves that innervates the head and neck. These nerves serve a variety of functions, both sensory and motor, and are responsible for moving the muscles in the face, head and neck, and receiving information the brain can interpret into all five sense. Appendix A outlines each cranial nerve, it’s sensory and/or motor function, and the foramen in the bones of the skull it passes through.
Basal Cell Carcinoma often abbreviated as (BCC) is the most frequently appearing form of skin cancer. They are also referred to as Basal Cell Cancer. It was discovered along the way as skin cancer was being treated as different types with no specific period. The BCCs’ are uncontrolled growths that normally arise in the skin’s basal cells. These cells lie in the deepest layer of the epidermis which is the outermost layer of the skin. BCC’s are normally caused by a combination of two things; one is cumulative UV exposure and the other is intense occasional UV exposure. The most vulnerable, according to a research done, tend to be people with fair hair, blue eyes and fair skin and this is because they tend to burn easily. The BCCs’ may first appear as a small white flesh or a colored bump that may bleed. Other normal appearances may look like open sores, red patches on the skin, pink growths, shiny bumps or scars. 80% of Basal Cell Carcinoma cases are mainly found in the head and neck that is the body parts that are mainly exposed to the sun. The nose also tends to be most vulnerable and according to a recent study done, 40% of BCC that were diagnosed on the head and neck were adjacent to the nose.
What are these red patches of skin on my body that I can’t ever help from scratching? It is eczema, which is defined as a medical condition in which patches of skin become inflamed, with blisters that cause itching and bleeding. Genetics take a role in the possibility of having eczema, after comes the diagnosis, then being prescribed the treatment needed, and lastly their prognosis.
The first known use of dermatology was established in 1819 and only in the 1930’s did its practice become more widely accomplished, known and sought after. (“Dermatology” 2014) Since then it has extensively evolved and changed and been able to provide services for women and men around the world. Originally being a part of the medicine field can now be considered a division of the beauty industry due to availability of services and treatments for aesthetic, pampering purposes, rather than just originally founded for medical issues of resolving skin disorders and diseases. Dermatology being defined as ‘a branch of medicine dealing with the skin, its structure, functions and diseases’ (“Dermatology” 2014) now offers many professions one being a dermatologist, whic...
Basal and squamous cell skin cancer are the most common forms of skin cancer. Multiple studies have shown that these cancers are almost always connected to large amounts of sun exposure. This can come from things like outdoor sports, performing something outdoors with little coverage from clothing, and getting multiple severe sunburns. You can see signs of skin cancer inside and outside of your body. Rough, thick, dry skin patches are common symptoms, but things
I read the book, "The Skin I’m In". This book impacted the way I view life. I used to get bullied about my height and skin tone. Maleeka Madison, is the main character of the book "The Skin I'm In" by author, Sharon G. Flake. Maleeka shows strength and faith.
Skin cancer is a disease where cancer (malignant) cells are found on the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). The three types of cells found in the epidermis are squamous cells, basal cells, and melanocytes. These cells in time grow to be cancerous. Thus, the three types of skin cancers are squamous cell, basal cell, and melanoma. Melanoma is the most deadliest and destructive type of cancer. (“Skin Cancer” infotrac.com) The number of people with melanoma has risen in Scotland from 3.5 in 1979 to 10.6 per 100,000 in 1998 for men and 7.0 to 13.1 for women. (Miller 945) Squamous cell and Basal cell skin cancer can kill up to 2,200 people a year in the United States. (Sommerfield SIRS.com) Basal cell, being the most common type of skin cancer, is the cancer that about 75 percent of the people have. (“Skin Cancer “ infotrac.com) Melanoma is mostly seen in older men but ever since tanning came in during the 1970’s, it has increased in women 60 percent around the ages 15-29 over the past three decades.(Sommerfield SIRS.com) “And basal cell and squamous cell cancers are increasing at a rate of about 5 percent per year”(Sommerfield SIRS.com).

“Living with Burn Trauma,” an online article, states that “human skin is the largest organ of the body.” It provides many functions which assist humans to survive. What happens if this vital organ is destroyed? This is a question with which thousands of Americans are challenged annually. In the United States alone, 4,000 people die in burn accidents or from complications of burn injuries (“Prevention”). One common misconception is that burn victims have all come into contact with flames. Burns result from fires, electricity, hot liquids, chemicals, and even ultraviolet rays. Seeking medical attention for a proper diagnosis is critical to ensuring quality treatment and management of burns. Burn Centers have been established to help patients adapt to life after burns, which can be a great challenge. In today’s society, hospitals and medical professionals can treat burn victims, but the best remedy for burns is prevention.
Dry skin is one of the more common side effects of most forms of cancer treatment, including both radiation therapy and chemotherapy. While there are many other causes of dry skin, it is one of the more common issues cancer patients must learn to cope with as a routine part of their treatment.
