Which attribute do you feel that you most need to improve upon? Why? Cultural competencies are the area I need to most improve. What works best for me is, to assess the patient of a different nationally first if working day shift or last if working night shift, which depends of their acuity. Critical thinking will strength with my continuing education as I learn the patient, the disease process effect on the body and performing a good history and physical. A cultural assessment interview is very important when taking care of patients or their families who may be from a different culture than the nurse’s. In order to be able to better take care of a patient, we first need to know their own interpretation of disease and illness within their cultural context, values, and beliefs. Since I am Indian and my culture is a mix of the Indian cultural beliefs and my religion Islam, I was looking forward to this interview so that I am able to learn more about different cultures using my assessment.
Cultural competence has to do with one’s culture. Culture affects among other factors, how children are raised, how families communicate, what is considered normal or abnormal, ways of coping with issues, the way we dress, when and where we seek medical treatment, and so forth. Providing culturally competent care is a vital responsibility of a nurse’s role in healthcare. “Culturally competent care means conveying acceptance of the patient’s health beliefs while sharing information, encouraging self-efficiency, and strengthening the patients coping resources” (Giddens, 2013). Competence is achieved through and ongoing process of understanding another culture and learning to accept and respect the differences.
Some of my strengths include having the ability to work in teams as well as individually. In today’s healthcare environment, having the ability to work in a team is essential to collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals towards achieving the desired outcomes for the patients. I am compassionate of all people who need my care. Having empathy towards individuals who suffer from illness, injuries, or otherwise require our services is a core characteristic of nursing. Optimism is another personal strength. I am good at finding the good traits of people, inspiring to build upon their strengths, and empowering them to use their maximum potential toward attaining their desired aspirations. Perseverance is another characteristic I possess. I have the ability to push myself and overcome obstacles to reach my goals even if they seem unattainable at first. Lastly, I possess excellent communication skills. In today’s cultural diverse healthcare environment, healthcare professionals face communication challenges when providing care to limited English-speaking patients. Nurse enhance their ability to provide client-centered care by reflecting on how their beliefs and values impact the nurse-patient relationship. To provide appropriate patient care, the nurse must understand her/his culture and that of the nurse profession. Cultural biases can be particularly difficult to identify when the nurse and client are of a similar cultural backgroup. When we recognize and know a culture, we will know what is right for our patient, and thus may impose our own values on the client by assuming our values are their values. Due to these cultural differences and lack of knowledge, disparities are increasing.
