One of the main causes of consumerism is directly related to one’s social status and the portrayal of one’s self image. Today’s society has defined what one must have in order to keep up with a particular trend or to represent a higher class. In a New York Times article, Juliet Schor wrote, “Driving a certain type of car, wearing particular designer labels, living in a certain kind of home, and ordering the right bottle of wine all create and support a particular image” for those heavily concerned about social status. Now, it no longer becomes a matter of “making ends meet” but instead a competition to see who has the newest “this” or the biggest “that”. Annie Leonard, a Masters graduate from Cornell University, spent almost thirty years traveling to over forty countries to study where consumer goods were produced and disposed. In her video called “Story of Stuff”, Leonard explains how consumer goods are produced. She begins by describing the mass deforestation in foreign countries, destruction of natural rock formations for precious metals, contamination of water sources, eventually causing harm to the wildlife due to their destroyed natural habitats. Leonard states that “in the past three decades alone, one third of the planet’s natural resource space has been consumed” (Story of Stuff). In the U.S. only four percent of the nation’s original forests remain, and forty percent of the water has become undrinkable. These destructive environmental issues can all relate directly back to consumerism because the more goods we purchase, the more goods manufacturers will have to produce. Leonard says we live on a planet with finite resources and after a while, there will not be any more resources to produce consumer goods. However, corporations and private businesses often show little to no concern toward environmental issues as their main goal is to make profit, sometimes even without considering the environmental costs. In her research, Leonard found that much of America’s production and disposal took place in countries such as China and India. The production of these goods releases harmful chemicals into the atmosphere and the disposal of the goods contaminates nearby water sources, making them impure. In chapter seven of The Way We Never Were, Stephanie Coontz focuses on consumerism and materialism. In this chapter, Coontz claims that the root causes of consumerism is affecting Americans in a contemporary society is the mindset of people having an addiction to having the latest and greatest in terms of any goods. Coontz argues that “consumerism and materialism affect working adults and non working ones, both sexes and all ages, people who endorse new roles for women and people who oppose them” (page 223). In 1899 Thorstein Veblen wrote The Theory of the Leisure Class: An Economic Study of Institutions. In this work, Veblen presented critical thinking that pertains to people’s habits and their related social norms. He explores the way certain people disregard the divisions that exist within the social system, while subsequently emulating certain aspects of the leisure class in an effort to present an image of higher social status. He also presented the theory of conspicuous consumption, which refers to an instance when a person can fulfill their needs by purchasing a product at a lower cost that is equal in quality and function to its more expensive counterpart; however, said person chooses to buy the more expensive product, by doing so, they are attempting to present an image of a higher social status. The middle class was disappearing and people took different approaches to dealing with this fact. One way of life that became synonymous with the 80’s was being a young, urban professional, or what people at the time coined a Yuppie. Due to the widening wealth gap, it became essential to market products as either upscale and downscale. Producers were forced to place their items in one frame of reference of the other, fancy of frugal. To sell items with the high price tag advertisers played on the yuppie habit of compensatory spending. Consumers are creatively successful when designing a persuasive advertisement for increased profitability. In a normal household, it’s the parents who have the financial obligations; therefore, it would be wise to grab their attention. On the other hand, it takes less than a strategic mind targeting children because the simplest things fascinate them. Businesses have been perfecting commercials to be effective on the viewers, for years. Although marketing has had an impact on some adults, a more efficient route was discovered. Unfortunately, the effect was more powerful through the vulnerable minds of children. The effects of consumerism damages a child heavier than an adult; therefore, states should have laws protecting children from being commercialized.
A resource shortage demands an increase in productivity effacting the gross domestic product (Grimes and Register 2016, 5). Schor provided three main contributing factors that led to the shift of consumerism. The first, is that women, particularly college educated women start moving out of the homes and into the social activities of society and into the workplace (Schor 2004). Being around other people in the workplace who were talking about upscaled consumption patterns led to more spending. The second factor is the fact that households had higher incomes to allow for more spending. The third factor was the media and television advertisements. Consumers were being exposed to what was available and were told they to could experience all the luxuries available. Upscaled housing, vehicles and clothing were all representative of status. These were visual examples of ones lifestyle that gave the appearance of success. Advertisment also, launched the “branding” era that changed the way consumers made purchases. The example that Schor gives in is water, prior to the 80’s water was just water but when advertising took over, they promoted various bottled waters that consumers felt if seen with would give them status. This applied to many products to include athletic shoes with the Nike, Addidas, and Converse logos on them, coffee like Starbucks, cloths with visible labels for Gap or Abercrombie and Fitch all gave a status to the consumer. An example of buying based on social status is my high school basketball team in the later 70’s. Being raised in a farm family of five children, money was tight. My high school basketball coaches decided we as a team would wear addidas high top sneakers. This was not a mandatory directive but highly encouraged . These items are not advertised as luxury items, but as something someone needs to survive.
