Consequences entails the negative or positive outcomes, resulting from an action. The every-day decisions that citizens make worldwide result in repercussions that may have seemed unimaginable in their lives and the lives of others. In comparison, characters in literature also make split-second decisions, leading to events that may either benefit or harm them. The movie Captain America Civil War clearly demonstrates the topic actions carry consequences. The Avengers team worked together to stop Ultron from dropping Sokovia over Transia. Sokovia’s weight could easily wipe out the entire world if dropped from the height in which lied. Actions define a person based on how they handle the situation presented. The characters that face crises choose paths that reflect how they act as a person: whether they fight, run, or comply. Actions do carry consequences, no matter how big or small, they can affect everyone. Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and Hotel Rwanda directed by Terry George, demonstrates how actions carry consequences.
In both the novel Things Fall Apart and the movie Hotel Rwanda, there lasting significant conflicts leading to consequences that heavily affect the characters in the stories. Both pieces of literature parade the problems that can arise when different cultures come together. In Things Fall Apart, conflict between the village and the Christian missionaries lead to people dividing up and fighting with each other. When Okonkwo returns from exile after seven years and tries to rally the people to rebel, he kills a missionary, which leads to Okonkwo losing faith in Umuofia and his eventual suicide. Both pieces of literature present the ways cultures can break apart both from within and from outside forces. In Things Fall Apart, the Igbo tribes have a strong culture and tradition, working together to produce crops, trade currency, and form agreements. When the European missionaries come to Umuofia, they spark a divide between the villagers and the cultural traditions that the Igbo have embraced for centuries. The Igbo perform many ceremonies to worship and respect the gods in their culture. When the missionaries come to the villages, they tell stories of one true god that rules over all life. This confuses many members of the community and leads them to look into the new religion. he Igbo start to choose whether they wish to continue to follow their culture and or embrace the new Christianity that has been presented by the missionaries. This provides evidence that it is the force of the white missionaries coming from outside that leads to the dividing and breaking up of their culture. The action of choosing one side over the other creates the consequence of mistrust between age-old traditionalists and the new-age converts.
