Barbara Jordan: Congresswoman, Lawyer, Educator Barbara Jordan, an educator, congresswomen, and lawyer, because of her braveness the United States government will never be the same. Barbara Jordan became to be an inspiring women to many. Jordan was the first African- American woman to become Texas’s senator. She was ambitious and because of that she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Barbara Jordan will always be remembered as an inspirational women.( book) Barbara Jordan was top of her class in her schooling years. When she was only 16 she graduated from all- black Phillis Wheatley High School. Barbara was in top 5% of her class and a member of the honor society. After high school Jordan wanted to go college at University of Texas but the school still was segregated. Barbara passed both the Massachusetts and Texas bar exams. Jordan was a national champion debater at Texas Southern University, she defeated her opponents from Yale, Brown and tying with Harvard. In 1956 Barbara graduated from Southern Texas University with a double major in political science and history. After Southern Texas she went on to Boston University Law and graduated in 1959. In 1994 Bill Clinton presented Jordan with the Presidential Medal of Freedom along with the First Lady ( in that year). The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the country's highest civilian honor. The presidential Medal of Freedom is usually given to high security, world peace givers, and importance to the U.S. The medal was established in 1963. President Harry s. Truman decided to establish the medal. Thirty- one individuals were given the medal on December 6, 1963 by President Lyndon Baines Johnson ( infoplease.com).
