Guns are common items that have been used in war; they are also used for sport and home defense. The Second Amendment gives all Americans the right to bear arms; although in recent times the Amendment has created controversy as to whether all Americans should be allowed buy and own guns. Another issue involving guns, is should there be a limit on what type of guns the general public can buy. The type of rifle that has caused many of the arguments is the assault rifle. Here is a brief history on the assault rifle; “The assault rifle is a class of weapon that emerged in the middle of the last century to meet the needs of combat soldiers on the modern battlefield, where the level of violence had reached such heights that an entirely new way of fighting had emerged, one for which the existing weapons were a poor match” ( Shurkin, 1). Assault rifles are popular weapons used in many armies and militias around the world, …show more content…
For instance, federal law preempts state law and forbids a person from carrying a weapon at government facilities. This includes post offices, federal court buildings, military facilities, correctional facilities, transportation facilities (such as Amtrak), and other federal property” (Gale Encyclopedia of Everyday Law 2016). Wyoming, on the other hand, is an exception because in our state a permit is not required. Permits can be issued upon request, but citizens of Wyoming are not required to have permits when carrying a firearm. Gun control is needed there is no question about that, however the big issue is how much gun control should there be. If there is too much governmental control over guns, it could possibly infringe on our second amendment rights. Although, if there is not enough control over guns, there could more outbreaks of
For hundreds of years Americans have been growing up with the notion that it is a right to own a gun. Since the creation of the second amendment, people all over the United States have been able to guns for private use. Guns operated by the public are said to have a variety of uses such as, being able to protect oneself if conflict arises, grants the ability to put food on the table, and are used in competitions shooting targets against other people. But for many people guns have been seen as the root of all evil. Anti-gun users think that guns cause a variety of unexpected and innocent deaths. They also think that there are not enough laws in place that allow just about anyone to purchase a gun. The question of should guns be legal to all citizens has plagued our society. Do you think it is morally right for anyone to arm themselves and use it when they deem it to be necessary? Or do you think that the 2rd amendment seem unnecessary and outdated law that needs to be rewritten? These questions are just two of many that have thrown back and forth between pro-gun and anti-gun users.
First off, United States citizens were given the right to bear arms in the 2nd amendment of the Constitution, so many people buy firearms. For example, 40% of all US homes have at least one gun. The United States Constitution states, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Although it is a given right, the 2nd amendment is also just a reminder to the government not to take this right away from citizens. Additionally, Wisconsin has a state preemption law that says that cities can not pass firearm ordinances that are more strict that the state laws. They can enforce a sal...
The word assault means to make a physical attack on someone, but how does a weapon with the purpose to provide food for your family become classified as an assault weapon? If a weapon is used to assault another person is it then classified as an assault weapon, or is it still just a weapon used to bring harm to someone? The classification of an assault gun should be changed.
America is the most well-armed nation in the world, with American citizens owning about 270 million of the world’s 875 million firearms (Marshall). Indeed, this is more than a quarter of the world’s registered firearms. The reason why Americans own so many guns is because of the Second Amendment, which states, “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” (Rauch) This amendment guarantees U.S. citizens the right to have firearms. Since this amendment is relatively vague, it is up for interpretation, and is often used by gun advocates to argue for lenient gun laws.
“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” The right of all Americans to bear arms is a right the Founding Fathers held to equal importance as the Constitution itself. Gun control laws directly violate this right and therefore should not even be under consideration. Even if that issue is overlooked, gun control advocates state that in order to reduce firearm related violence, gun control laws must be implemented to remove the violence caused by firearms. Although this may seem reasonable, the consequences of such laws are ironically counterproductive; they exacerbate the problem instead of fixing it. Besides the fact that the American Constitution guarantees its citizens the right to bear arms, the idea of restricting gun ownership in order to reduce firearm-related violence would ultimately fail given the previous experiments of gun control in England and in numerous states.
Right now the government has limited firearm purchasing only to people who pass certain steps. Gun control has risen as a controversial subject in the United States today. Many say gun control or banning of all firearms will help protect and make our country a better place. Reasons many are wanting to ban firearms are that the 2nd amendment is out dated and unjustified in this date and time. Writer Eugene Robinson states that “farmers wrote of “arms,” thinking about muskets and single shot pistols. They could not have foreseen modern rifles or high-capacity magazines.” Many agree with Mr. Robinson saying that back when the constitution was written they couldn’t have understood what was going to come in the future. Citizens also believe people have no reason to fight against intruders that come in their home that’s what the authorities are for. If people what to defend themselves why waste the money and time on having police? In this day and age why have weapons why not cut out all firearms and just be one happy country, it’s that simple, but is it really that simple? (“Assault Weapons Must Be Banned in
Take a look at the history of our country and the role guns have played in it. According to the second amendment gun ownership is perfectly legal and guaranteed as a right. There were and are good reasons for this, luckily they are still practiced today. Back in the day guns used to be for hunting and, on the occasion self defense. But when the colonists of this country had enough of British rule, they picked up there own personal guns and went to war and the British saw first hand how powerful the rough band of average American gun owners were. Our forefathers knew that the general population if armed would be key in winning the war. And it was.
The second amendment to the US Constitution shows that it is unconstitutional to have complete and total gun control. The second amendment states that “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” This means that it is the right of an American citizen, abiding by the constitution, has the right to bear arms. Currently, there are over three hundred and seven billion people residing as American citizens. Within the homes of these Americans, forty five percent have a registered gun in their household. As a diverse nation, there are many reasons why there are guns located within a household. Sixty percent stated the gun is used for protection against int...
The second amendment states “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” This means that citizens have a right to bear arms, but since this amendment is not very clear there is some controversy. Many people argue that there shouldn’t be assault weapons because they are too powerful, or that this amendment was not intended to allow high powered assault weapons. There are many reasons on why assault rifles and large magazines should not be banned in the United States, including protection, defense, and past bans have not been effective.
The United States is a free country, and people think the right to bear arms is a basic right that every American has. This second amendment adopted in the Bill of Rights since 1791, it gives every U.S. citizen the right to keep and bear arms. Since this right got adopted, there are a lot of controversies around it, about regarding how, where, when, and why people should have the right to bear arms. This is an issue that most Americans should care about because it is about everybody’s safety. Some people say that because of people can carry gun freely, the ratio of crime and violation keeps rising. People always think gun is an evil thing that is only hurting and killing, but people do not know that it is the people who control the gun is evil, not the gun. American citizens should continue to have the rights to bear arms, because its benefits are significant to everybody; people use gun for protection, defense themselves from other threats, and also for many recreational activities.
The second amendment says, "A well regulated militia being necessary to security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." The second amendment was made for two things. It is there for first, to guarantee the individuals right to have arms for self-defense and self-preservation. The second reason is related to the militia. The right to carry a handgun for self-protection is a privilege of citizenship. The confusion is the right of the state or the individual. The regulation of handguns could be looked at as unconstitutional. The amendment is for the people and not the state.
Due to the recent disruption of violent crimes on campus, many citizens that are pro-gun activist have suggested that both the students and teachers should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on school campuses. Those who are with guns allowed on school campuses claim that their rights have been violated for the reason that many college campuses refuse to allow weapons of any kind on their property. The Constitution of The United States of America already grants citizens the right to carry guns with them. It is not appropriate for guns to be in a vulnerable area such as a college campus or any University. There are already too many guns available to the public or easy to get any kind of gun, and allowing them on
When looking at the 2nd Amendment when it was first introduced and enacted. Our founding fathers were not concern about anything but making sure that our rights as citizens, whom they called the Bill of Rights, were protected from the new federal government that would be created. The founding father such as James Madison, who wrote the Bill of Rights, gave a very vague meaning of what it meant to bear arms. Many people who support gun control would say that Madison intended it for the federal militia and not for states others that oppose gun control state that it an individual right to carry and that the second amendment should be protected and not restricted. The debate behind whether or not guns should be control is very broad due to the fact that no law is the same when it comes to guns. For example in most rural areas in North America such as the southern states that law abiding citizens who uses use for sports feels that it’s a god given right to bear arms and that no government can take or infringe upon that right because of the 2nd amendment. These are the idea of federalism in America. Many opponents to gun laws fear that eventually their right to even have a firearm will be taken
In the past year there have been a worrying number of shootings in the United States. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there has been 290 mass shootings in 2015 (gunviolencearchieve.org). The United States needs to find a way to limit these numbers any way possible. Although guns are a “right” because of the second amendment, there is no logical explanation on why an assault weapon, which can shoot more than 10 bullets before needing to reload, are legal. Times have changed so the laws should too. The country no longer needs a militia when there is an army trained to protect us. The United States needs to better regulate guns, whether it is a better background checks or banning military-style weapons.
Guns have a long history in the United States. Guns are used for self-defense but they are also used for hunting. Since guns are a part of the American culture, it is almost impossible to get rid of all the guns in the country. However, by training people how to use the guns properly, give people the right mental care, and limit the people who can have guns could stop school shootings in America.
