Artificial Implantation
What is Artificial Implantation? Artificial Implantation or IUI is a technique used to help treat infertility in both men and women. In this procedure, sperm are inserted directly into a woman's cervix, fallopian tubes, or uterus. By doing this it makes it possible for pregnancy to occur where is was not able to before. Infertility in men can be caused by many factors including having few or no sperm, having too large of veins in the testicials, and other injuries or illnesses to the testicials and sperm. Infertility in women can be caused by heavy alcohol and drug use, smoking, age, environmental toxins, stress, poor diet, athletic training, being overweight, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and many health issues (Women’s). As a result of these factors both men and women in 1981 artificial implantation and other fertility techniques resulted in over 200,000 babies being born that year and the numbers have rapidly grown over the years (Infertility). The technique of Artificial Implantation is discussed according to the diverse moral values of others; furthermore, throughout Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein, moral values are also questioned over creating a human from something other than sexual reproduction.

PROS: In the United States, 6.1 billion women have trouble conceiving a child of their own (Women’s).
Upon learning this information, many women resolute to artificial implantation as a solution to become fertile. Studies show that 10 to 20 percent of couples became pregnant after one cycle of IUI (All About). Controversies over artificial implantation are seen as ‘okay’ to some due to the results that have come from the procedure. From a religious standpoint it is argued that artificial implantation is or is not morally wrong or right. We see that it is stated it is controversial discussed that IUI is not morally wrong due to the fact that there is no physical act of adultery
(Slick). CON: Modern medicine today has evolved to make it more accessible for people to have children. With this one may question in this circumstance who is morally and socially responsible. Many controversies over who is the responsible paternal figure has become an issue of artificial implantation. Many people argue that it is or is not morally and socially right to conceive a child other than by sexual reproduction. Other controversies state that artificial implantation is seen as religiously wrong. It has been considered religiously wrong due to the fact that some may see it as “playing God” and not letting conception happen naturally. Artificial implantation is considered morally wrong according to the Christian Bible (Slick). It is seen in the eye of a Christian that a child should be made through a man and women whom are married, and not a third party. Consequently we see in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the idea of moral controversy over someone being conceived from a form other than sexual reproduction reflect those of artificial implantation.

Our culture has a stringent belief that creating new life if a beautiful process which should be cherished. Most often, the birth process is without complications and the results are a healthy active child. In retrospect, many individuals feel that there are circumstances that make it morally wrong to bring a child into the world. This is most often the case when reproduction results in the existence of another human being with a considerably reduced chance at a quality life. To delve even further into the topic, there are individuals that feel they have been morally wronged by the conception in itself. Wrongful conception is a topic of debate among many who question the ethical principles involved with the sanctity of human life. This paper will analyze the ethical dilemmas of human dignity, compassion, non-malfeasance, and social justice, as well the legal issues associated with wrongful conception.
The addition of a child into a family’s home is a happy occasion. Unfortunately, some families are unable to have a child due to unforeseen problems, and they must pursue other means than natural pregnancy. Some couples adopt and other couples follow a different path; they utilize in vitro fertilization or surrogate motherhood. The process is complicated, unreliable, but ultimately can give the parents the gift of a child they otherwise could not have had. At the same time, as the process becomes more and more advanced and scientists are able to predict the outcome of the technique, the choice of what child is born is placed in the hands of the parents. Instead of waiting to see if the child had the mother’s eyes, the father’s hair or Grandma’s heart problem, the parents and doctors can select the best eggs and the best sperm to create the perfect child. Many see the rise of in vitro fertilization as the second coming of the Eugenics movement of the 19th and early 20th century. A process that is able to bring joy to so many parents is also seen as deciding who is able to reproduce and what child is worthy of birthing.

IVF involves combining the egg cells and the sperm cells outside the uterus. Once fertilized, the egg is then implanted back into the women’s uterus or stored for future use.
For many years, infertile couples have had difficulty facing the reality that they can not have children. A few options have been used for a long period of time: the couple could adopt a child or keep trying to have a child themselves. Many times the patient's doctor will ask her to consider selective reduction: aborting a few fetuses to save the ones she can. These new scientific break-trough’s, for example, conceiving a child outside a mother’s uterus; brings question to religious, legal and ethical morals. The Orthodox community in particular have many concerns regarding the new developments associated with reproductive technologies. Although there are many questions, not all the answers are readily available as many of the prominent Orthodox rabbis disagree on how to answer these concerning questions.

In my opinion, In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is one of the greatest breakthroughs in Medical Biotechnology in the last 50 years. Finding out you are infertile can be heart-breaking and distressing. After trying for long periods of time, some couples are not able to conceive. Thankfully, this problem many couples have can be fixed by In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), a process that was developed and used in Britain first more than 30 years ago by Doctors Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards. In 1978, the world’s first IVF baby was born into the world and since thousands and thousands of babies have been born every year using this method.
Test tube babies have long been stigmatized by society as the unnatural results of scientific dabbling. The words `test tube baby' have been used by school children as an insult, and many adults have seen an artificial means of giving birth as something perhaps only necessary for a lesbian woman, or a luxury item only available to the elite few. The reality is that assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have been helping infertile couples have children since 1978.1 The methods of in vitro fertilization, it's variants, and the other ART procedures are ways for persons that would otherwise have no hope of conception to conceive and, in a rapidly growing percentage of cases, give birth to healthy babies. As the technology has developed, the quality and range of assistance has developed as well. At present, the means of assisted reproduction and the capabilities of these procedures has grown at a somewhat dizzying pace. However, thought to the repercussions of the applications of ART are being disregarded to some extent while the public's knowledge and the understanding of embryologists and geneticists surges forward. It is possible given consideration to things such as the morality of these techniques, the unexplored alternative uses of these procedures, and the potential impact they posses that further development is unnecessary and possibly dangerous.
Aldous Huxley’s dystopian Brave New World is more than a warning against the dangers of technology; it is a prediction for the future that rings eerily true. Today we understand that many of the fantastical devices and practices imagined by Huxley are coming to life. Most notable is the practice of in vitro fertilization, something that was a mad scientist’s dream during Huxley’s time, and is today a commonplace practice.
