Advertising, as defined is a form of marketing that seeks to manipulate, encourage, and sometimes persuade and audience into consuming a certain goods, products, or ideas. The word advertising comes from the latin phrase 'Ad Vertere' which means to turn toward or to get the attention of. Advertising can exist in the form of print, commercial, and audial, to name a few. It can appear as written text, spoken word, or be visual. While many of us think of advertising as how it is utilized presently, advertising has existed for a great deal of history. For example, ancient advertising can be seen in the cave and wall paintings of ancient Africa, South America, and Asia dating back to 4000 BCE. Also, Egyptians used advertising in the form of posters and messages printed on papyrus. There is also evidence of advertising used in Rome as well as in Greece printed on papyrus for things such as lost and found posters and also wanted posters. There has also been evidence of displays of political and commercial advertising in ancient Arabia as well as in the ruins of Pompeii. There are key elements to advertising that advertisers must know in order to be successful. A brand must be innovative and so must their advertising. Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
A concept that surfaced in the early 1920’s, advertising is a tactic that has been used to influence and persuade the people to participate in consumerism. Advertising in the 1950’s was mainly displayed by the use of the television, newspapers, billboards, and the radio. At the turn of the twenty-first century, advertisers began to rely more on the Internet and technology to share and provide information based on their products. Many relied on the usage of electronic billboards, sporting events, and even video
Have you ever seen an advertisement for a product and could immediately relate to the subject or the product in that advertisement? Companies that sell products are always trying to find new and interesting ways to get buyers and get people’s attention. It has become a part of our society today to always have products being shown to them. As claimed in Elizabeth Thoman’s essay Rise of the Image Culture: Re-Imagining the American Dream, “…advertising offered instructions on how to dress, how to behave, how to appear to others in order to gain approval and avoid rejection”. This statement is true because most of the time buyers are persuaded by ads for certain products.
Intro Deciding what you want to study during your college career can be a difficult and tedious task. This is due to fact that many young adults coming out of high school are unsure of what they want to do or what path to take career wise. It is also tedious because this requires that these individuals have to constantly try and explore new avenues so that they can find their passion in life. The path I chose to take when coming out of high school was entering the business school at Howard University.
All these stages are simple, but extremely effective. Any advertisement that you hear on the radio or see on the TV is using classical conditioning to make you change your behavior and go and buy their product. Cola, pizzas, cars, and even toilet paper commercials are no exception. Advertisements are made with this psychological principal, using objects or certain types of people to generate an emotion to dig deep into your mind and your pocket book. Today we will take a walk through the history of advertising and look at how commercials for beauty products have evolved with the

Advertising has been defined as the most powerful, persuasive, and manipulative tool that firms have to control consumers all over the world. It is a form of communication that typically attempts to persuade potential customers to purchase or to consume more of a particular brand of product or service. Advertising has influenced teenagers in a profound way. The influence of advertising has affected teenagers in a way they are persistently exposed by means of television programs, articles in magazines, product endorsement ads, and through the internet. Although teenagers are excessively exposed, how they perceive and process advertisements ultimately determines how they are influenced. With that said, the perception towards advertisements can be amalgamated between reality and fantasy, which evidently has both negative and positive impacts. Advertisers strategically capitalize on what is trending in youth culture which makes teenagers most pervasive to wanting to fit in. Advertising can mean many different things in today’s world. When advertising first was developed it was done by would of mouth and the classic flyer or poster, which is the traditional media. Then it moved up to using broadcast media such as radio to help capture a bigger audience. After that it moved towards the television where an even bigger audience could be reached.
