When your friends are feeling upset, what do you do? Listen to them cry into your shoulder going on and on about an ex boyfriend or their family member? For as long as it might take for them to get over or solve the issue. Or do you just leave them alone and hope that they can do it on their own? If you picked the first choice, the caring friend, maybe the right employment choice would be a therapist. Therapists or counselors often gather information based on what a patient might tell them and simply give one choices on how to handle a situation in the most healthy way. Sometimes it can just help having a unbiased person and their perspective. The main goal is to be able to find a career that fits almost perfectly to one’s interests and …show more content…
Some of these outside sources can be access to money, time in order to finish this schooling, and the struggle of finding a job after the schooling is completed. There are advantages and disadvantages to being a therapist. Disadvantages of becoming a counselor can be dealing with papers, insurance, and billing issues. As well as, dealing with multiple clients on a daily basis, which is emotionally draining. In addition to those, one will have to devote time and energy to finding new patients and dealing with reoccurring ones. This can be especially difficult, because personal problems and personal opinions cannot interfere with the work place. There are also, many advantages, that hopefully will override the disadvantages at hand. The reward of helping people overcome their burdens is one of the top five great parts of being a counselor. Another positive to becoming a therapist is the high money earning potential. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, on average psychologists working full-time earn between $50,000 and $100,000 a year. Of course psychologists, or those who have completed their doctorate are able to make as much as 200,000 a year. Finally, having the opportunity to meet new people. As a therapist one may see all different types of personalities and cultures who have the same problems everyone else has. If one pursues medical therapy all of the different disorders and how they affect people can be fascinating all on its own. Being a therapist, just as any other occupation has upsides and downsides, but the goal is to find a career path one appreciates and is passionate
The career that interests me the most is Occupational Therapy. I chose to interview Debbie, a Registered Occupational Therapist who received her Bachelor’s in Occupational Therapy from Western Michigan University. She is working at Lynwood Manor which is a long-term rehabilitation facility.
A year and three months ago, I was at football practice. I was on the defensive line. I tripped up the running back, but the running back landed on my left ankle. The result was a fracture on my left tibia. I played on my injury for two weeks. At that moment, I was not able to play football for the rest of the year. During this summer, I injured my back. I began to accumulate information about how to treat my injuries. While I was researching, the words physical therapy popped up. I clicked on them, and the article discussed what a physical therapist does. When I was halfway down the article, it stated that a physical therapist helps people with injuries like mine. After researching, I decided to be a physical therapist.
A counselor gives guidance on psychological, personal and or social problems within their life. Most counselors can be found working in a hospital, rehabilitation and counseling facilities. A master’s degree is needed to be able to work with psychiatrists and psychotherapist. A counselor not only works with individuals but couple and families as well. Counselors give their client the ability to live independently, whether they have a mental disability or physical. Also, counselors like to give keys to success when it comes to education. They want to make sure the client has access to what they need to be successful.
Over the course of a lifetime, one experiences a multitude of thoughts and emotions. Collectively, these thoughts and emotions relate to one another as they affect one’s mental health and well-being. According to the Oxford University Summer School program, “mental health refers to the psychological and the emotional well-being of an individual” (Mental Health). When one does not have a positive mental health state they struggle in quite a few areas. These areas involve coping, positivity, personal connections, expressing emotions properly, and their personal belief towards their value in society. One can cause a rift in relationships they have with others and can further deteriorate their mental health and overall well-being when they do not
During my freshman year of college, I determined that I wanted to pursue a career as a physical therapist. As an Athletic Training major, I learned that I loved helping athletes with rehabilitation and realized I wanted to be able to help a wider range of patients. Once I decided that I wanted to become a physical therapist, I began observation hours. In total, I have completed 117 hours in four different physical therapy settings over the past three years.
One of the benefits is able to handle any situation with patients that you encounter. Another benefit of being a practitioner scholar is that you are knowledgeable in the field. I currently work in a call center environment and it’s important to be knowledgeable, people want to know that you are able to provide accurate information and sound confident in doing so. Being a practitioner scholar in this field of psychology is the same. In order to guide people in the right direction in a counseling section, you want to know what you are speaking about and sound confident when you are speaking about it. I am committed to achieving this goal because I once doubted that I would ever get to this point in my life. I struggled to always push myself in my undergraduate studies, but now at this point as I am older I am now able to stay committed and get things done. I am excited that I am getting closer to being a clinical counselor. I have always enjoyed listening and helping others out and, being a practitioner scholar in the field of psychology is something I know I will enjoy
I extensively researched the pros and cons of being a psychologist and the results were endless for both sides. Just like any other profession, there are generally equal amounts of cons as there are pros when you are researching a particular job. “The pros include: Several different areas of study depending on your interests, an incredibly rewarding career path, good pay depending on where you end up, and job prospects all over the world” (HRF). “The cons include: Getting a job might be a challenge, undergraduate and graduate school is a must, chance of research failing or being disproven, and some people do not consider psychology as an actual science” (HRF). Also, dealing with clients and their issues can, oftentimes, be draining and difficult to
For some people, doing simple tasks may seem impossible because of a mental or physical disability that restricts some seemingly simple functions. These people can seek help from a recreational therapist to help achieve personal goals that may seem unlikely for them to accomplish. As part of my senior project, I had to research a career that I’m interested in and what it takes to obtain that career. I chose to research recreational therapy, and I looked at multiple websites to see if this career is a good choice for me. I had never heard of it before and didn't know that it was a career, but as I researched more and more, I realized that it could be a great fit for me. I also looked up some colleges in Pennsylvania to see what school I should go to to receive a good education that will prepare me for starting my life as a recreational therapist. I even emailed a professor, who used to be a therapist herself, of recreational therapy at the college I am interested in and conducted an interview. I learned a lot about this interesting career along this journey and I’m
Life has its ups and downs. Without passion, there is no success. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Occupational Therapists treat injured, ill, or disabled patients through therapeutic use of everyday activities. They help these patients develop, recover, and improve the skills needed for daily living and working”. This is a job of a caring and a motivated person. I believe I have all the qualities that fit to be an Occupational Therapist. I am caring and compassionate towards people. Moreover, I have the desire to help those trying to overcome a mental or physical change in their life.
I have been determined to pursue a career in occupational therapy since the summer after graduating eighth grade. Although, comically, my view of occupational therapy has drastically changed. I am a planner; I love to map out my day by the hour. I knew I wanted a job that was active and was centered around people. I crossed paths with occupational therapy when I was taking career assessment tests for fun. Occupational therapy continued to appear in my portfolio. I did a lot of research on the profession; I was hooked. Not because of what I probably should have loved about the profession. My initial impression was, “Occupational therapists get to play all day long and get paid for it!” That reasoning motivated me to pursue this career path for
My first semester in college, I took a Psychology 101 course and immediately knew I wanted to work in this field. I was drawn into different theories and how individual’s minds work. I always believed I was born to help others and guide them to success in life. I desire to help others because of my own personal struggles with mental illness. My unique perspective on mental illness allows me to empathize on a different level with individuals. I desire to give back and support to the community the way it was there for me during my dark times. I was lucky to have known from the start that psychology was my interest. I am excited to continue my education in the counseling field and become a future Clinical Mental Health Counselor.
Physical therapists are health care professionals that provide therapeutic services to their patients who have temporary or chronic physical conditions that were caused from injury or disease. Physical therapist also provided therapeutic services to patients after they have gone through surgery to help them gain back mobility and manage their pain. They can also work in preventive care by promoting healthy life styles and instructing individual patients or groups on preventing injury by using exercises that stretch and strengthen muscles. To help their patients try to recover they use massage techniques, wellness plans, and different types of equipment. When a physical therapist sees a patient for the very first time they must do an examination, evaluation, diagnosis, and then put together a physical intervention to start the rehabilitation process. They also work as a team with other health care professionals to help with their patients needs. Physical therapist can really make a difference in their patient’s lives by not only providing therapeutic services but also encouraging and motivating them so they can get better. The main goals of physical therapist are to help their patients retain or gain back lost physical mobility, eliminate or reduce pain, increase productivity and help promote a healthy life style so patients can have a better quality of life and become more independent.
The negative aspect for social work is the salary, and hours. There is a lot of work that goes into being a social worker and the salary for it isn’t very high for the amount of work one must do. The hours can be all over the place and aren’t very conducive to raising a family. The positive aspects for and Elementary School Teacher are the salary, and the work environment. The salary for working only 9 months out of the year is very decent for an elementary school teacher and the work environment is something I would enjoy. The negative aspects for an elementary school teacher is the job market. It is only at average for the growth of it. It may be difficult to find a job. The positive aspects for a Counselor are the job market, and the diversity in the type of work one can do. The job market for Mental Health Counselors is very high. There are many other types of counselors other than Mental Health Counselors. The negative aspects of being a Counselor are the salary. The entry level of education required to become a Mental Health Counselor may not be worth the Salary. The positive aspects of a Special Education Teacher are the salary, and the work environment. The salary is very decent for any level of teaching and I would be able to support myself on it. It is an ideal work environment for me to work in. The negative aspects would be the stress level that comes with the job and the job market. The job market for special education has average growth except for preschool aged children. So if I were to become an Elementary School Teacher and then eventually want to work as a Special Education Teacher it may be hard to find a job. The positive aspects for teaching preschool are work environment and the job market. I love working with younger children and the job market for preschool teachers is very good. The only negative aspect I can see is the salary
The definition of psychology is as follows: “The scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context.”(Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, 1828) There are many fields of psychology an individual can go into, whether its clinical, forensic, or otherwise Psychology is a very broad field of scientific study that affects many aspects of our lives. There are people who study this science in schools, hospitals, private practices and more. This science also interests me as well. I have already taken psychology in my junior year, and I am currently taking AP psychology in order to gain some credits for college. The study fascinates me; the reason being that it explains our behavior and what makes us different from any other species on this planet. It goes in-depth of the analysis of humans’ greatest accomplishments and lowest behaviors. It turns our
