Movies are a worldwide phenomenon, but why are some movies academy award winners while others plummet in the box office. I believe there are five major factors that go into creating a successful film beginning with the storyline, script, directing, sincere chemistry as well as realism. Script writing that is genuine and one an audience member can connect to is crucial; as is having a plot that doesn’t move so fast, and is able to seamlessly transition into different scenes. A great storyline always needs some sort of conflict in it; it is the heat of the drama. The obstacles they face in a movie is typically along the lines of someone wants something, someone/thing keeps getting in their way. For example in Dirty Dancing Baby wants to be with Johnny, but her father is standing in her way. A good hook is important to any storyline as well, you need something to grab the audience attention; all that is needed is a “What if?” Such as what if you are watching an entire series just to later find out it, it was all fake and none of what happened was real; a good enough “what if?” can set you apart from the pack. “You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me?” Whether you’ve seen the movie or not this is a line we’ve all heard once or twice before. This quote can be heard being said from many generations. Good script writing is crucial it can either make or break a film. Some films that have had long- lasting success are movies such as Star Wars, The Godfather, and Forrest Gump. What these three films have in common is that they all have lines that are still being quoted till this day and will continue to be for years to come. This is all due to good script writing. The emotional connection that an audience feels has as... ... middle of paper ... ...an believe,” (Molly, Haskell). If an audience member leaves a movie still thinking about it days later, and has connected with it on an emotional level as I stated before it will be successful. For example 12 Years a Slave won best picture at the Oscars this year, in 2013 the winner was Argo, looking back even further at previous winners you find that The King’s Speech, Hurt Locker, The Departed, Chicago and Schindler’s list are all previous best picture winners as well as many other films based on true stories. Even though fictional movies have won best picture as well the number of films based on real events outnumber the fictional ones. This year alone six out of the nine nominees for best picture were based on true stories. You find that people who are big fans of fictional movies such as Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and X-Men are stuck in a fictional world.
Many time in our lives, we have seen the transformation of novels into movies. Some of them are equal to the novel, few are superior, and most are inferior. Why is this? Why is it that a story that was surely to be one of the best written stories ever, could turn out to be Hollywood flops? One reason is that in many transformations, the main characters are changed, some the way they look, others the way they act. On top of this, scenes are cut out and plot is even changed. In this essay, I will discuss some of the changes made to the characters of the Maltese Falcon as they make their transformation to the ?big screen.?
Beginning the mid 1920s, Hollywood’s ostensibly all-powerful film studios controlled the American film industry, creating a period of film history now recognized as “Classical Hollywood”. Distinguished by a practical, workmanlike, “invisible” method of filmmaking- whose purpose was to demand as little attention to the camera as possible, Classical Hollywood cinema supported undeviating storylines (with the occasional flashback being an exception), an observance of a the three act structure, frontality, and visibly identified goals for the “hero” to work toward and well-defined conflict/story resolution, most commonly illustrated with the employment of the “happy ending”. Studios understood precisely what an audience desired, and accommodated their wants and needs, resulting in films that were generally all the same, starring similar (sometimes the same) actors, crafted in a similar manner. It became the principal style throughout the western world against which all other styles were judged. While there have been some deviations and experiments with the format in the past 50 plus ye...
The job of a screenplay is to establish many different aspects of a movie, including tone, dialog and narrative structure. A screenplay is a constant juggling act that must keep all of these aspects in balance, obviously there are some films that do this better than others. A rather unique film that handles each of these aspects well is writer/director Steve De Jarnatt’s Miracle Mile (1988). This film is truly one of a kind and how it pulls it off is something of a miracle. It’s the story of a man named Harry and a woman named Julie falling in love with one each other over the course of a day. Unfortunately the good times can’t last, as Harry misses their date and picks up a pay phone, only to discover that nuclear warfare is happening and he only has a certain amount of time to get out of the blast zone. De Jarnatt’s screenplay is very different, but it somehow works out beautiful and how it does
Classical Hollywood Cinema is a chain of events that has a cause – effect relationship within a time and space. The environment looks realistic and believable to the viewers because the style is predictable, and the time is linear throughout the film. Each scene with the development of the plot and story is motivated by cause and effect. The filmmaking process involves four major steps that cut across the board. The process revolves around these levels that make it orderly to every individual involved in filming. The process has the following stages: Idea and Development, Pre-Production, Production and Post- Production. In Idea and Development it is normally
Before the civil rights movement could begin, a few courageous individuals had to guide the way. Dr. Vernon Johns was one of those individuals. Dr. Vernon Johns was a pastor and civil rights activist in the 1920s. Johns became the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama in the late 1940s. During his time as a pastor, Johns preached many sermons on how African American people were being treated not only in the community but in society. Johns on multiple occasions upset his community through his ideas on social change. Through a sociologist perspective, many sociological concepts were displayed in The Vernon Johns Story. Some of those concepts included: ascribed status, conflict theory, deviant behavior, alienation, and
Film and literature are two media forms that are so closely related, that we often forget there is a distinction between them. We often just view the movie as an extension of the book because most movies are based on novels or short stories. Because we are accustomed to this sequence of production, first the novel, then the motion picture, we often find ourselves making value judgments about a movie, based upon our feelings on the novel. It is this overlapping of the creative processes that prevents us from seeing movies as distinct and separate art forms from the novels they are based on.
George Lucas's devotion to timeless storytelling and cutting-edge innovation has resulted in some of the most successful and beloved films of all time.
Who we are as a person has a lot to due with the various kinds of influences that we may encounter through different events, personal experiences, stories, and by others. Surprisingly enough movies can have a large impact on us, that can really change who we are. The Blind Side, August Rush, and The Devil Wears Prada, are among the many different films that have had a significant impact me on how I live my life and see the world. Films have a way of influencing people into thinking and believing in ways they may have never thought in before.
What makes a movie or a play important? The messages of course; no text will ever go without messages intertwined within the story line. Tom Stoppard is a master of this technique which is shown throughout his play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. This is a play about two gentlemen who are from William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. Stoppard writes this play expecting readers to know the play Hamlet extremely well; some parts of the play are even performed within Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. However, this is a play about two dead men walking; readers who know the play Hamlet know that these two men are going to die at the end of the play. This is a play where everything is a metaphor, a message, or a theme, some of which reference back to Hamlet, others refer to other things throughout history. There are specific messages that arise throughout Tom Stoppard’s play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which includes the use of language, the question of identity, and lastly the uncertainties of life and death.
Movies are everywhere. They are a part of everyone’s life. Think about it, how many movies do you
For example, in Argo, a movies based on real events, there is some interwoven American propaganda about how the mission was so smart and brave. The movie also criminalizes the Middle Easterns to a fault by not really showing their motives. Meanwhile, The Revenant, also based on real events, is constantly bogged down with supernatural images and flashes of a “higher” journey that can make the story convoluted. And though the character of Hugh Glass may have been religious or supernatural, the visions feel out of place in an otherwise brutally realistic film. Both movies I mentioned have won Oscars and are great films in their own right. However, they have issues that makes someone double take or doubt an otherwise great film. Sicario, has seemingly learned from these mistakes and has strayed clear of such obstacles by exhibiting an entirely boots on the ground approach to a frequently discussed and dramatized
of the film. The audience like to know what to expect of a film before
are the ones who developed the first classification scheme. During the 4th century, Aristotle grouped animals according to where they lived. On the other hand, Theophrastus grouped plants according to their stem structure. As time passes by, the ways of identification flourished. Not only did the classification system affect the branch of biology, but it also affected the entertainment industry of the modern world. Genre is an example of the categorization for modern art and entertainment. Genres, such as horror, romance, drama, comedy, and science
These movies are history lessons to the audience since they show something we were not able to witness or take part in. Consider war movies such as “The Tuskegee Airmen and Memphis Belle”. Though not one hundred percent accurate, both depict actual events of historical wars. They are examples of how movies can teach the newer generation about what their distant relatives did for their country. Another type of informative movies describes the cultures and societies around the world. “City of God” is a prime example. These movies show the hardships that people in other countries face in their day-to-day lives. Again, these are just two simple examples of how movies can be learning tools for a mass
Before any physical shooting can take place, a series of preparation steps must occur to ready the production crew and actors alike. The beginning of any film starts with the story, much like a novel. Instead of words in a book, however, a script serves as the backbone of the film, containing all of the characters, settings, and action that takes place in the story. The script’s story will comprise of a conflict posed at the main character, a goal for that main character, and some sort of resolution. The elements of storytelling generally stay the same for scripts; the format for writing the script accounts for largest difference to that of a regular novel. Instead of ...
